I've always respected the Steelers. But they got what they deserved this game. They were making rap videos and pretty much guaranteeing they were gonna just roll over the Chargers without a contest. I listened to this entire game on my Walkman at work as a 21 year old and I was stunned and amazed at the Chargers performance. Humphries to Martin!

This was a pretty solid Chargers teams, it's just so sad though that many players on this team ended up dying so young: Seau, linebackers Lew Bush, David Griggs & Doug miller, backup running back Rodney Culver, defensive end Chris Mims, defensive tackle Shawn lee, and backup center Curtis Whitley. That's a lot of individuals for one team.

Met a guy who was on this Charger team. He said it was the toughest game he ever played in. After the game about half the team was in the training room. He admitted the 49ers beat them fair and square in the SB, but said the game would not have been an essential blowout if they hadn’t been so banged up and worn out. Still a great, great win for the Chargers this AFC championship. Few people expected them to win, but they gritted this out.
@Tyrannis07
@Tyrannis07 Жыл бұрын
The Super Bowl was going to be a blowout no matter what. The 49ers were just a lot better. This was a tough game, but so was the NFC Championship, and the 49ers had to beat the 2-time defending champs; they were physically and emotionally beat up too.
@PhilAndersonOutside
@PhilAndersonOutside Жыл бұрын
@Tyrannis 07 I think you are pretty much right. The NFC was simply better during those years. Game _might_ have been 42-31, instead of 49-26 if the Chargers weren't as worn out. SF was just better. No one in their right mind thinks the Chargers were better. No way.

As a diehard Steelers fan...94 was my favorite team...if someone told me Foster never played for Pitt again and never played for anyone. Eric Green never played for Pitt again and barely played after 94 O Donnell would have a huge 95 season..better than any expectations...marred by a bad Super Bowl. And left Pitt after 95 and barely played. The great Rod Woodson would tear his ACL in the 95 opener and never be close to the same player. The great Greg Lloyd would tear his knee in the 96 opener and never be close to the same player. Greene and Searcy gone after 95 as Pitt struggled w stadium revenue. Chad Brown gone after 96... And three rivers gone...the new stadium just isn't the same.

Steelers made the AFC title game in 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004. The only other team do make a conference title game every 10 years like that for four consecutive decades was the Raiders (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000). Speaks to how good an organization is to be that highly competitive across four eras of football.

They wouldve gotten blown out by any of the NFC's best teams..... Dallas, Green Bay, or San Fran. Also any of the Bills 1990-93 AFC Championship teams would've destroyed this Chargers team. Probably one of the worst teams ever to make it to the Super Bowl...at least that I've seen in my lifetime

as a Steelers fan, this was the most gut-wrenching devastating loss I can remember. Heavy favorite at home, have a lead in the second half that dwindles away, tantalizing late game hope, and that devastating goal line stand. I'm not saying this Steelers squad would have beaten that stacked 49ers team (NFC Championship game was probably the de facto Super Bowl), but it doesn't make this loss hurt any less.

Jose Mercedes No, I held nothing against Rodney. I was upset at Seau for having a huge retirement ceremony here and then going and signing with the Cheatriots. And Rodney's release had more to do with AJ Smith than Marty. AJ was a despicable human being who hated Marty and made roster decisions without consulting with Marty at all.

Well i guess that is true, but i will say that as pats fan that 2006 chargers team was the best i have ever seen and that playoff game, was probably so bad, like throwing 3 interceptions was bad, but the way the chargers imploded and Marty did not do such controlling his players and stupid turnovers and penalties and dumb playing by Marty on that 4th and 10 to go for it.
@jessetaylor7797
@jessetaylor7797 7 жыл бұрын
Jose Mercedes I agree, that 2006 Chargers team was the best team we've ever had. They definitely should have beaten NE that day. But it's hard for me to put the blame at Marty's feet. Yes, the 4th and 11 decision was not wise, however the Chargers still would have won had it not been for Eric Parker and Marlon McCree fumbling the ball. It's hard for me to blame an HC for fumbles.

@@capswole81 it doesn't matter. I think the 49'ners or Cowboys would've killed any team from the AFC. Buffalo was the dynasty in the AFC back then and the Redskins and Cowboys blew them out. It was no different this year and I wanted the Steelers to win this game. Super bowl XXIX was closer than it was. The 49'ners took their starters out by the 4th quarter.

I kind of disagree with you. In 1994, the Steelers had the number two defense in the league in both points allowed and yards allowed. Their pass defense was third in yards allowed and first in touchdowns allowed. Steve Young would not have had six touchdown passes against the Steelers defense. Unfortunately, their offense wasn't anything to write home about so San Francisco would still likely win.

I watched this game live as a young kid. I remember this being the first time a sporting event really affected me. I was devastated the Steelers lost this game. I was too young to really be that upset over the 92 NL championship series vs the braves. But I distinctly remember this game really hurting. The first of many heart breaks for this Steelers team until they finally got a Superbowl in 05. For a time there I just thought we would be tortured into watching great Steelers teams constantly falling short in games they probably should have won. Thank God for Ben haha.

I still can’t believe Pittsburgh lost that game. They literally lost because they gave up two big plays, and they didn’t convert in the red zone. All Neil O'Donnell had to do was step into that last pass and fire it to B. Foster and its a T.D, instead he feels the rush punks out and lets it go off his back foot, batted down game over. For me personally the most heartbreaking Steeler loss in my life.

Such an exciting game. Pittsburgh was by far a better team but San Diego had the better plan. Has there ever been a better pair of championship games than 1994? I think the Steelers were plagued with overconfidence. They booked a recording studio to make a rap video the week of this game. "I hear they're selling that video for half price now," from a Chargers player after the game.

Still bizarre that Pittsburgh lost this game. Really just a couple plays where they didn't own it. And both of those plays were 43-yard TDs. O'Donnell actually played fairly well, but the play-calling became uninspired when they needed it most. Also, Seau was a BEAST.
