I should mention the runner. Yes, he was on the wrong side of the road, but also forgivable since the inside had nowhere for him to go if a car hugged that blind corner. He was making a safe choice

Just commenting a fun fact, but here in Brazil, there is the misconception that runners and bicycles should be in the opposite side of the road too, probably because it is like that in the US, but here you should be in the same direction as the road, but you see a lot of bikes, especially older people, going in the opposite side. I think that that`s crazy, if you hit a car, it will be worse

Run into traffic. Ride with traffic. It’s not a misconception. It’s just the law. But in this case he could be hit since there’s no room to move off the road if a car hugs the edge

At 17:24 you talk about torque, and how "it didn't even downshift!". In addition to the awesome low end grunt of the M119 V8's in general, for this era of Mercedes, there's a kickdown switch in the gas pedal. You can feel its resistance as you press the pedal downward. If the switch is working propoerly, the transmission won't downshift until you pass through the kickdown switch. This means you can extract maximum acceleration from the car's current gear, without the downshift, which is especially helpful when cornering the car (so as not to upset the chassis balance). One of the many reasons why these cars are, as you say, "a joy to pilot", even all these years later. I currently own several old Mercedes, and have owned 16 overall. This is just one of the many reasons why. I love your work! Please keep doing what you do: formal speech patterns, excellent diction and consonant enunciation, and no silly music. You present as educated and informed. In today's age of hop-hop youtubers, your channel is a delight.

That's one of the joys of getting to know a vehicle well, even a slushbox. Learning things like how far down you can push the throttle before it downshifts and getting a feel for it. It's another thing that's lost with drive by wire and transmissions with more and more speeds, no feel for when kickdown is going to happen as there's no mechanical switch, and a transmission that wants to downshift if you breathe on the throttle. You basically have to drive them expecting the transmission to upset the chassis and expect a bit of a slide which can be fun but makes it hard to drive fast but smooth.

This switch if pressed quickly enough when flooring it while stationary will give you first gear on takeoff which is exactly what happened when you started the drive in your video. It never holds first gear all the way to redline. i had a 260E which behaved exactly the same.

Mercedes and BMWs of the era are just built so well. I have a BMW e28 and all the door latches, hood latch, and trunk latch just feel solid. They feel like they could last another century before showing signs of wear. They’re just crisp, it’s hard to explain through text. The hood latch in particular feels so much nicer than my dad’s 8 year old Impala

When I close my eyes, I can still hear the solid sound of the door closing, the feel of the knobs and switches (especially the wobbly feel and the sound of the turn signal rebounding to neutral), and the smooth and flowty ride. We called this type of car "Kilometerfresser" - literally translated to mileage eater.

This one brings back the memories. I had a 300ce for a short time (a careless girl backed into it full speed and totaled it).😢. It was red and beige interior with amg wheels. I got constant compliments even though it was elderly at that point. Later, I got a modern E350 and hated it immensely. It was so blah…. This 500E has way more character. You pick the best cars to review, Ted.👍

My favorite era of Mercedes. Pure "thunk" when closing anything. Analog everything and to the point. The 300E was a car that had "enough power" and communicated prestige low key. The 300E is like that 635 coupe tested a year or two ago. Both are "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis or Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. The height of elegance and sophistication. The E500 is what happens if you insist that AC/DC clean up and put on Savile Row custom suits. Same basic car, but The E 500 is pure adrenaline like "Thunderstruck." You get out of The E 500 and the soundtrack is the guitar feedback opening of "Voodoo Child" by Jimi Hendrix.

A day when Tedward uploads a classic Mercedes POV is a happy day in my book! As a W124 owner and enthusiast, I agree that the steering and suspension feel of these cars is one of the things that really sets them apart. By the way, when you compared it to your E39 M5, the W124 also has a recirculating ball steering box! Only the next generation of E-Class (W210) got a more conventional and modern rack and pinion steering.

This is one of my favourite cars. I love the fact that the W124 500E is a true sleeper - one that would be almost impossible to tell apart from a regular W124 except to those who know exactly what to look for. That way, you can tell who the real enthusiasts are, as opposed to those who are just attracted to black plastic oversized fake air intakes and big wheels. You don't need big wheels, fake air intakes, rear spoilers, front lip spoilers etc to make a fast car. For me, the W124 500E is perfect.

I didn’t realize how nice that car was until later on. I later got myself a 08 e550. It was an amazing car, but it just didn’t have the same solidity or the “feel” of the w124. And now I miss the simplicity.

If I had the means, some older cars I would love to own, at least to start, are the W126 560 SEL, W140 600 SEL/S 600, and the W124 500 E/E 500 (or if possible to find, the E60 AMG). It would be a dream to find clean example of the 190 E Evolution II. As much as I currently own a modern vehicle, there have been many times I would have loved to be back in my first ever car, the W126 420 SEL. It was my father's, and when I turned 16, he drove our family custom conversion van, and I drove the Mercedes. My parents wanted to ensure that I would be able to easily and safely transport my siblings and I home from school. We gave it to a local garage to scrap/use as spare parts after I hit a sign post base one evening when my father and I were headed to an event in heavy rain, and I was not use to the particular exit we had to take. I was unable to find a safe gap to change over to my right, and was forced onto the median that made up an on-ramp for the motorway. I ran over said sign post base, and broke the front axle. The steering wheel flipped 180-degrees, but by some miracle, I was able to nurse it to the hotel we were supposed to be at. I think it was 48-hours later before we could head over to have the car towed. To this day, whenever I see a clean W126 out driving, it brings back memories of my formative driving years, but more importantly, it shows that when well maintained, cars such as the W126 will last forever. The quality was and still is second to none.

My mom had a 1994 E220 for a number of years - she loved it. Brilliant turning circle for such a big car too. However, W124s have their issues, such as the wiring loom - they were really junky and would fail every few years, so second-hand ones are expensive and new ones are virtually impossible to get and very expensive. Also, the boot/trunk lid rubber is also a known bad point - it can leak quite badly without being obvious and rot out the back of the chassis, which is what happened to my mom's one. We tried to have it fixed 4 times, 3 times with new rubber seals, but could never get it right. The front seats are very firm, but the back seat is much softer.

Awesome video! Thanks for talking about the steering. I’m so picky when it comes to steering feel. It’s enough of a factor for me to stick with these older cars for the steering feel alone. I’ve heard from quite a few people that the recirculating ball steering on the W124 is sublime, much better than the steering used on the E39 540i/M5. I can confirm the steering on the V8 E39s is nowhere near as good as the steering on I6 variants, especially the 540i steering as the ratio on the M5 is a little sharper.

May have already been mentioned, but it's interesting to note that the slatted back light treatment purposefully designed that way to disperse snow, slush and general debris that could collect on the car, in order to ensure visibility of the lights in bad weather. I think it's regarded as the most overly engineered vehicle ever made. Back when their corp accountants used to cower in the presence of the designers and marketing.

I’d love to see you revisit the W211 E55! If you’re ever in the CA Bay Area I can provide a mint 20k mile example.

W124 was peak 80s and 90s Mercedes. I still pine for an E300-24.

This and the E39 M5 both have recirculating ball steering my man. The W210 that came after had rack and pinion.

Of all the cars you've driven this has to be the best. The Ferrari 250GT California was nice but, if I had to drive from Copenhagen to Milan, it would have to be the W124.

Man, I can buy it from abroad for $36k in great condition. But can’t decide because I have never imported cars into the States before. It would probably be a good investment and would definitely complement my videos on KZfaq.
