Hands down the best team in collage football that yr, it's a shame that they wouldn't let psu and Nebraska square off for the national championship. Penn state would have ran away with it

Kevin Fisher: This might be the most intriguing matchup for a NC that didn't happen. I'm a Nebraska fan but my parents are Penn State alums so I kind of see both sides and I've heard both sides. Penn State is 1994 national champions as much as Nebraska. I've always thought Nebraska would win because their defense was a lot better than Penn State's defense, but the margin for how much better Penn State's offense was over Nebraska's was less. Also we've seen time and time again an elite offense always loses out to the elite defense. Don't forget, Nebraska beat Colorado much more convincingly than Penn State beat Michigan and that was with their 2nd string qb. But I just don't know. The big question is how good was Oregon's offense compared to Nebraska's offense. I think Penn State puts up more points on Nebraska than Miami, like maybe 24 or 31. If Oregon's offense was as good as Nebraska's offense, then we know Penn State would most likely hold Nebraska to 14. In that case they only would have to score as much as Miami did. But there are so many factors which means all we can really say is: Nebraska is 1994 national champions Penn State is 1994 national champions That is college football.

Nebraska was lucky that Miami's receiver went out hurt in their bowl game because they couldn't stop him. Had he not went out Nebraska would have lost. And there is no way if one person was giving them problems that Nebraska would have been able to stop Carter, Ingram, brady, Scott, and Collins for 4 quarters. Would have been a blow out. Let's just be honest with each other here the only reason Nebraska got the national title was plain and simple Tom Osborne was retireing that year and they wanted him to get a national title and if they put them up against Penn state he would have been imbarrased . So Penn state went to the rose bowl and Nebraska went to I believe the fiesta bowl, non the less they put Nebraska with a weaker opponent with several losses to make sure they won and kept Penn state far away from them.

35-0 in the 1st quarter with a pro-style offense; crazy good

@NittanyNation22 Very true, when the starters were in, they mostly shut down teams, and when they didn't, they did the same bend but don't break style that won it all in 1986. For example, the Buckeyes only had 6 first downs in the first half and zero points. Also, in the Rutgers game, Penn State led 55-0 midway through the 3rd quarter before putting in backups that let Rutgers get 27. And of course, ugggh....that Indiana game. Wish I could forget the Chris Dittoe touchdown.

@BassAssassin9 We may have seen 100 against Minnesota or Iowa and 84 against Ohio State. I think the best example of the defense being better than remembered is PSU was up 55-0 on Rutgers after scoring in the middle of the third quarter (I think it was 48-0 at halftime) and then Paterno mass subbed in backups and Rutgers made it 55-27. That game is often used as an example of how poor PSU's defense was, but it's really an example of how good PSU's starting defense was.

@MVillani1985 I think the pass blocking will improve with the timing. That is so key is being generating the quickness off the snap needed for effective pass blocking.

@mongoose704 John Schaffer was one who won games by being a game manager but was really good at what he did. He was no Kerry Collins or ToddBlackledge for that matter, but no Matt Senaca, either thankfully. One who was really underrated was Chuck Fusina, despite the NCG loss. I think the QB situation this year could be best described as Rashad Casey (Bolden) vs Mike McQueary (McGloin), the former having more potential and the latter having more spark but being more mistake prone.

@mongoose704 Yeah, it was very BBDB (or as we call it, bend but don't suck), but I meant world class in a different way, not really on paper, but with as you said the smart way of bending and not breaking at just the right time. I think what's really amazing is that the same team that beat Miami very nearly could have been tied by (but not lose to since it was a 2 point try with no time on the clock after a TD as time expired) Maryland and escaped with a 17-15 win.

I love how you drop the ball in 1994 it's an immediate fumble. No reviews on little boys in the locker room though. "We are Penn State." lol

I wouldn't say the 1994 defense was weaker than usual. Think about this. How long did the offense keep them resting on the sidelines? Not very long. How many times did the defensive starters play past the midway point of the 3rd quarter? Not many times, making the scores deceiving. It's a myth that this years defense was weak based on the scores. The starters were good, they just didn't play all that much.

NittanyNation22 I agree. Average drive for the offense was 2 minutes. Not much time to rest for the defense.

I wonder if Nebraska could have held this team down or not it would have been fun to have that chance at National Championship because if anything this defense weakness was passing game and well Nebraska didnt light up the air.

Penn State's defense was okay. The Hawkeyes actually outgained Penn State and that wasn't just the against the 2nd teamers. Penn State gave up more than 20 points 8 times and more than 30 twice. I know some will claim that Penn State was in some blowouts where the 1st team defense wound up being pulled. I am already accounting for that otherwise I would have said the a terrible defense based on the scores. Their defense was okay.

Indeed... especially when you consider The Nit's strength of schedule was #7/109 ... Nebraska's was #40. PSU also was ranked #1 in SRS. (Simple Rating System; a rating that takes into account average point differential and strength of schedule.) Which I think is much more telling than how many points you're giving up. (Nebraska was #4 SRS)

This wasn't the worst drubbing I had to witness. Next year in 1995 Iowa went to Columbus and we were getting destroyed 56-0 in the second quarter. We scored the next 35 but it was never, ever in doubt. Ohio State could have easily put 100 on us. Terry Glenn had 3 catches (38,56,55) for 149 yards and 2 tds in the 1st quarter! He sat out the rest of the game. Eddie George ran untouched it seemed. Our first TD came at the end of the 1st half and it was a gift as Shaw was down at the 1. 56-7

@MVillani1985 We think alike (who says Hawks and Lions can't get along?) IMHO if your defense stays strong and your ground game continues its dominance, all you will need from your QB is to be a good leader and not make any serious mistakes. In that aspect I would favor Bolden. I've never been a fan of musical quarterbacks. Your offensive line needs consistent timing to get into a rhythm and that is hard for a developing offensive line to have to adjust to a different QB and the snap count.

@MVillani1985 You know I don't call that '86 defense world class. I do call it the most timely and opportunistic defense in history and quite frankly they are THE STANDARD for bend dont break. How do you give up 450 yards to Miami with Michael Irvin, Testaverde, Brian Blades, Perriman, and Highsmith...and only give up 10 points? That's the epitome of bend don't break. 7 turnovers helps.

@mongoose704 Three things will be key for Penn State this year. A solid defense, a good punter, and winning the turnover battle. If those things come togehter, Penn State could finish with less than 200 yards of offense and still come away with the win. Biggest thing Penn State has to do is make sure that the quarterback doesn't have to win the game, at least until pass blocking improves.

@MVillani1985 I wouldn't have called your defense great. Illinois ran up 400 yards on you and they certainly weren't known as an offensive juggernaut. However if your defense was as horrid as some people say you would've been 8-4. It was a decent defense. Not as good as '93, but good.
@MVillani1985

@mongoose704 I'd say the 94 defense was great but not world class like the 86 defense. The 86 defense was almost impenetrable it seemed (it virtually shut down Miami). More what I call a blue collar defense. Kinda like the 05 team's defense (which allowed 427 from Northwestern and 401 from Michigan State) in that they had games where they weren't as effective and had others (like the wins over Ohio State and Minnesota, both years oddly enough) where the defense looked amazing.

@MVillani1985 BBDB is a common characteristic of a team with great linebackers and excellent tackling fundamentals. Every good Penn State defense shows excellent tackling fundamentals. Nothing really fancy. Just sound basic fundamentals and team defense. BTW your '86 team faced only one ranked team until Miami and that was #2 Alabama and if you are worried about QB this year not many outside of Penn State know who John Shaffer is! Did you build a statue in honor of Chip Lohmiller yet? LOL
