1995-1997 BNSF the Merger Years, SD40-2, C30-7, C40-8W, SD70MAC, C44-9W, B23-7, B30-7AB, GP30, B39-8!
The Burlington Northern Railroad created in March 1970, a product of merged railroads in itself, and the historic Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, established in 1895, merged to create Burlington Northern Santa Fe. The corporate merger began with the creation of a holding company on September 22, 1995. In the years following, the operations of these two very large railroads were combined. Experiments with paint schemes took place, and locomotives from the predecessor railroads could be seen anywhere throughout the new 32,500 mile rail network. From BN SD9 units in local service to massive SD70MAC diesels hauling coal trains in the mountains, the variety of locomotive types and color schemes was unparalleled. From the Chicago Subdivision in Illinois, to the Pikes Peak Sub in Colorado, to the Panhandle Sub on the old Santa Fe transcontinental route in Texas, the Big New Super Freight railroad was undeniable.
