How to remove the water pump in a 4th gen Maxima. Ran out of tape before I could get to installation, but it's pretty much the opposite of removal.
Between the shitty mic on my camcorder, the way I talk, and constantly moving around while filming, it may be difficult to understand what I'm saying. If I wasn't so damn lazy, I might consider making captions...if.
Part 1: • 1995-2001 Nissan Maxim...
Part 3: • 1995-2001 Nissan Maxim...
Should be the same for 4th/5th gen Maximas (5.5+ are similar, but they use a different style timing chain).

Fun Fact : You can use the serpentine belt tensioner support bolts (M13 - 1.25) to walk out the pump as described at around 5:30. So eliminates the need to go out and buythem if you don't have them.

I wish I had a friend like you to replace my water pump. You're a Super Wizard with the car. A Genius!!! I'm frightened to take my car to a mechanic after watching this video. It's not for a regular mechanic to do the water pump after seeing all of the special things you've done in this video. The regular mechanic would be clueless. I do all of my work on my car but the water pump looks wild!!! LOL I would have to see this in person before I attempted it. You're DA Man!!! GREAT VIDEO.

I've never had a timing chain issue doing these, but it certainly is a possibility. As long as you don't rotate the crank at all with the water pump out, and you don't play with the chain, it should be fine. If it starts up and has a dead miss on cylinders 2 and 3, your timing chain has jumped.

@EFM2409 I've never had a problem rotating the crank more than 20 degrees doing these pumps. I usually turn until I've got enough slack at the pump.

@digitalbrush30 Get in there with a mirror, see if it looks salvageable as-is. If not, you may need to remove the outer timing cover to gain the visibility and room to work on it.

It does appear to be a very involved job, but the only real issue is clearance. If you can work in the tight space provided and have some basic hand tools, it's a relatively easy DIY.

Fantastic videos, but unfortunately, when I tried to ever so carefully walk the water pump out with the specified bolts, the bottom ear broke off of the water pump. For that reason, I tapped the third hole, in an attempt to jockey the water pump using the top and side holes. That resulted in the side ear breaking off of the as well. So now I have two broken ears, and no way to remove the pump short of removing the engine and timing cover. I say that to counter your utterly absurd assertion that this is a brilliant design. Having replaced hundreds of water pumps over the years, this is probably the worst design I have ever seen. In fact, I don't think I could fathom a worse design if I tried. At this point I'd love to punch the idiot who designed this in the face, and then force him to R&R the engine on this hunk of sh*t!

@boredmder . Did you film it with a tape camcorder? How did you manage to get the video from tape to youtube? Thanks for posting.

Did this last night. Think I screwed it up. The water pump got caught on the timing chain, and I just kept turning those m8 screws, stripping and ruining the threads & holes for the mounting screws. Any advice on what I can do at this point? Right now the only screw I can get on is the one that wasn't touched by the m8 screws.

Push it back in, then do it again correctly, pushing the chain out of the way.

The minute amount of lubricant you're adding is nothing to worry about. Water may work, but it's not exactly the best lubricant.

I have The same problem with my car right now, but I have a question for you, hoy can I do to now if the link water is through The o ring Or through The pump? Thanks...
@boredmder
@boredmder 8 жыл бұрын
+chinoboxx Really the only way you'll know is if the pump has shaft play once the chain tension is off. I've yet to see a factory pump with shaft play, just failed o-rings.

+Derek Hensley There's really nothing to be afraid of, as long as you follow the instructions as given (or as seen in the FSM) you'll be fine.

+boredmder Now you're a pretty smart guy but you confuse the crap out of me when you got to the sticking that pin in tensioner and the whole bungee cord thing, man you lost me, WISH YOU COULD SIMPLY THIS. I'm leaking coolant right by the compressor as well however, not at a fast pace I was initially under the impression it was the thermostat housing unit until I came across your video. Is it feasible for me to even attempt this thing without causing engine damage or should I just take it to the shop?
@PersianCzar
@PersianCzar 11 жыл бұрын
Your the man!!! Thanks for the upload. When you use the silicone grease to lube both O-rings, won't the silicone contaminate the engine oil, or worse, the engine coolant? FSM says to just use engine oil on the white-dot (bigger) o-ring and doesn't say anything for the smaller one. I get your trying the preserve both O-rings but is this a safe technique? Will water work as a lubricant for the smaller o-ring? Thanks again P!!!

You do not show the whole proses. You do not show or tell that the motor mounts have to be removed. Bad teacher.
@boredmder

carlos valentin I actually did mention in the first video that removing the front engine mount helps, but in no way is it necessary. I've done it plenty of times without removing it, but that minute or two to remove it frees up a lot of space. Sorry to disappoint you, I'll refund your video purchase right away.
