Watching this is 2021 is interesting. I enjoy that tech side of the AC75’s, but this is definitely more pure sailing. It would be super interesting to do a cup that went back to displacement boats. Or heck- even both. Man- the longer I watch the better it gets.

A bit late, but thank you for this. I followed the 'Cup from 1962, when Gretel was the first Australian challenger, all the way through to the end of the AC-Class era. Once nationalism went out of it (designers/crews etc from the separate nations) and the boats changed to the the things we see today, my interest died. It's great to relive the good old days. :)

I wish the Ozzies would enter the cup again, it would be great to see NZ and Australia do battle again, especially in a cup match.

This race is what started the Lucky Red Socks campaign. Peter Blake was not inboard for this race, and he wore red socks when on board. The absence of Blake and his red socks was quickly noticed and suddenly everyone in NZ is buying red socks.

As much as I've enjoyed the spectacle of technology (4xwindspeed), this is real tactical racing - using different sails, outsmarting each other, very different ...and much more entertaining .... this relies more on skill than design

Even the non-foiling boats could get pretty fast in the right conditions though. My ideal for viewing would be non-foiling boats with high winds(with some variability) & sometimes choppy conditions.

They certainly do seem slow now haha, I believe these mono-hulls had a top speed around 17 knots, maybe 18 knots in a strong breeze. The current cats have got 10 knots more speed upwind, they are truly amazing.

I think that the AC 75 was the best design for the America's Cup. It was lightyears ahead of the old 12 Metres and required true sailing skills, tactics, and strategy. Boat handling, sail handling (or not, as we saw when Australia One rounded the first weather mark), and old school seat of the pants sailing is infinitely better than these carbon fibre abominations that they have zooming around the America's Cup courses now. These were beautiful boats and their pre-start maneuvering brought new meaning to the phrase, "The mating dance of the lead-bottomed money gobblers." lol

Agree with karl. The only way foiling boats could be fun to watch is if they used one design rules (identical boats) otherwise as you saw we had 6 races before a single lead change.. I've watched 7 America's cups and 2021 was by far the least exciting.
@boomchakalaka3715
@boomchakalaka3715 3 жыл бұрын
@Karl Burnett I'm with you 100% I think if you are going to remove close racing, close passes, sail changes, exciting pre starts etc etc then the boats have to be evenly matched at that speed. I thought before this started the results would be split seconds in some races but kilometres! I'm genuinely saddened by this change and for the first time since 88 I wont be buying the shirts, magazines etc I sat there bored for most of it and after waiting 4 years was let down. Hope that can turn this around...
@boomchakalaka3715
@boomchakalaka3715 3 жыл бұрын
@Karl Burnett your also spot on with the cost being the biggest factor to the absolute disappointing turn out of teams... again if this was a one design race (identical boats) with a max cost of 20m you might get Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain, Australia, china, Japan, Malaysia, etc many who have participated in the past but feel rightfully that 100+m for a boat race is just too much. The upside to that is about 70% of Switzerland watched when they completed but prob less than 10% this time.. imagine if we could attract just 30% of the above nations to watch... the numbers would be 10x that of any previous AC.

@@deathzone5893 "...dont understand why people would rather see the slow monohulls...." For many of us they are a more beautiful yacht than the ugly - yet very hi-tech - multi-hulls. It's a little like preferring the beauty of a Lockheed Constellation over the technical innovation of an Airbus A380.
@deathzone5893
@deathzone5893 5 жыл бұрын
Bruce Kennewell the airbus a380 is a beautiful plane. But we're gonna be watching foiling monohulls which I think will be just as exciting as the foiling cats. And definitely better than the slow monohulls. But the decision has been made foiling monohulls alot of people are actually glad to see foiling monohulls and even Peter burling. If others ain't happy with it then that's their problem they dont have to watch the Americas cup.
