I agree. In terms of Canadian representation in the same series at once. 3 greats. In terms of results? A 5-week stretch in '97 had 5 Champ Car races and 2 F1 races. All won by Canadians! JV winning the F1s, Tracy with three straight and Moore with the next two. Seven top-level open-wheel races in a row shared only between 3 Canucks. Not bad.

I've watched every Indy 500 race since the late 1960s, and this was the first time that the officials completely destroyed a race. The 2 lap penalty to Villeneuve was horrendous, all the horrible stop and go penalties that never would have happened in previous years, and then turning the green light on but then costing Goodyear the race because the freaking pace car didn't get off the track fast enough. This race, even though I was Canadian and loved watching a Canadian driver win it, just about cost me my love of Indy racing.
@de-fault_de-fault3 ай бұрын
The only thing that makes up for it a bit was that basically every contender got USAC’ed at one time or another, and so I’ve come to enjoy rewatching this one because it has a little bit of everything. But what a joke of a way to run a race. Really drove home the fact USAC in this era only officiated one Indy car race per year as the level of amateurism was palpable. And really made it that much more of a joke that Tony George wanted more of that (at least until mid-1997 when he also kicked USAC to the curb after the Texas scoring debacle).

Great job, Jacques Villeneuve deserved the win that day by driving calmly and methodically, coming back from 2 laps down, by overtaking the pace car before the green flag on the final restart, no wonder Scott Goodyear threw away his chance of winning the race, he should have come in and served his black flag stop and go penalty.

Few observations: 1. The pace car was slow in getting off the track all day, I'm surprised they didn't call back the restart with 24 laps left when both Pruett and Goodyear jumped out well ahead of everyone. 2. Knowing that, Goodyear should have figured the pace car was going to be slow getting off the track on the final restart. Also (and ABC didn't have his radio communication) his pit crew should have warned him about that. Maybe they did, but we'll never know. If they didn't warn him about the pace car, then they are just as much to blame as Goodyear. 3. USAC went out in a blaze of glory with their last sanctioned Indy 500 (IRL took over in 1996) with several penalties. 4. Many of the drivers who ran in the 1995 500 (Vasser, Pruett, Rahal, Sullivan, Tracy just to name a few) would never get another chance or would not drive again for roughly 6 years due to the open wheel split some 10 months later.

@dereklatshaw30172 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Bobby did it well in an era when it was it was more dangerous, knew it still was, and may have been avoiding it because of the seriousness of the situation. No point shouting, "did you see the guy with his legs flailing around after his car was ripped in half". Everyone saw it, nobody knew his condition, and Paul Page and others acknowledged the seriousness from the start. Today's racing world doesn't realize that not everybody went home at one point and the guys that lived through that era knew that better than anyone.

watch the replay very closely from the wall speedshot (pause here and look at the 3rd car in line. just to it's right sits something on the track. 1:03:37) ... Stan's car veering off happens right where that debris was, which got moved around by the first few cars ahead of him...

I would love it if all sports broadcasts offered an alternate satellite-like broadcast here where you can see all the stuff that happens during commercials here. Hearing all the chitter-chatter of getting stuff together when coming out of the break with the pit reporters is really fascinating (even the small talk at 2:44:18 of ribbing Bobby Unser was entertaining) all while production racks up replays to spot different things like debris or when someone cuts a tire. Also WILD on that Stan Fox crash had his legs dangling out of his car after the wreck and Bobby Unser is worried about all the debris on the track.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the restart until Goodyear btroke the rules by passing the pace car when the track was still under yellow. Robby Gordon's pit stop at the 4:03:15 mark probably cost him the race.According to the Indy 500 yearbook that year,Gordon thought he had a leaking tire (he didn't) and pitted.He was in 3rd,and seeing that Christian Fittipaldi nearly passed Villeneuve on the last re-start and Gordon had been AHEAD of him leads one to wonder how BIG a blunder that Gordon committed.This was an enormously entertaining race to attend and it should have had a closer finish,considering the number of guys running at the front.Make no mistake,Stan Fox nearly died of his injuries.I remember being at work the next day and WIBC led their news off every hour with things like 'Stan Fox fights for his life at Methodist Hospital' etc. I was expecting the announcement to come at any time.

I think I remember that Stan Fox was in a coma for a few days but then recovered. Ironic that he was killed in a non-racing car crash 5 years later. Danny Ongias had a similar crash in 1981 where the car was destroyed so much that the driver was exposed. He survived and returned to racing, and was the substitute driver for Scott Brayton after he was killed in practice in 1996. That was Danny's last Indy 500

No unlapping in CART/Indy under caution at least in those days don't know today. Villeneuve basically won by 2 laps against the entire field if he had not been penalized. He gained his laps by not pitting during some of the numerous yellow flags during the race. Brillant Team strategy honest.👋👍

I have been attending races since 1963 and saw 23 consecutive Indy 500's...Scott Goodyear passing the pace car was the dumbest move I have seen a race car driver make. Just a dumb-assed move. And to come back with that 5-year-old-in-a-sandbox "We all know who really won the race" was beneath any dignity I would have expected from him.

You would have thought after the 1980 or 81 Indy 500, where Mario believed he had won, because Unser went too far ahead , as they re entered the track, something like this could have been avoided or prevented. The green flag should never be shown, til the pacecar is off the track.
