Imagine an ordinary Nigerian citizen writing letters to the president and the citizen getting a response letter back from the president. Surely not in present day Nigeria. Thank you Zik for responding to the numerous letters from my dad who as a young intellectual was always exchanging ideas with people that matter on ways to move Nigeria forward. I found a copy of your letter among the documents he left behind. Likewise, one from Awolowo. These leaders were a breed apart. Not charlatans of the present day.

He was on the same platform for peaceful, and successful African continent, he wil be missed by those that he supported, and his family. He was one of the many great leaders of Nigeria, emanating from different circumstances, and communities with hopeful, sincerity to achieve greatness for their country. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was an EXTRAORDINARY human being. Keep in mind this epic interview was conducted when he was 90 years young.... 90 years.. His memory was something planetary!! How he remembered names and dates and places. What a man!!! I encourage everyone to read his biography!! ❤❤❤

Astonishing human. Incredible icon. They don't make his type anymore. Particularly amazing is his uncanny ability to recall details. He was 90 at this interview. His body might be waning here but you can see the sparkle of strength in his eyes. You can hear the excitement in his voice as he recalls details 60 years old. What a Titan! May God continue to rest his soul.

Please tell me who is the greatest among Bishop Samuel Ajayi (Adjai) Crowther, Herbert Macaulay, Zik, Obafemi Awolowo, Sardauna of Sokoto, Alvan Ikoku, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, 8 of whom can arguably be said to be the greatest Nigerians so far [the status of Sokoto caliphate in pre-colonial Nigeria is uncertain so Sheikh Usman dan Foolanidio is outside the loop]. Who among them can be holistically and objectively said to be the GREATEST ... primordial sentiments aside. Whose else's name was associated with the tag "of Africa"?! 'nuff said.

The syllable justifies excellent governance, the latter are protagonist in your educated views. However, I am not a political advocate, nor a political science student. One thing I can say about Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe is that he was the Epitome of Nigerian civilization. It would have been a wonderful event in his days, if the military junta of colonial rules, hadn't committed to a "Rule and Divide," de factor regime, signing a military intervention order, aftermath of independence of 1960s. He has left a legacy of hope, for all Nigerians that have truly impacted the growth the nation has been enjoying through their hard work, and humanitarian contributions to this day. We thank God for blessing Nigerian with Honourable Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. A faithful leader is a rare diamond in the sand. He shown a light of love, hope and perseverance for the freedom of all. His merits ensures, a steady flow, of nonchalant followers in his glorious days, up until our present day. The people have the power to unite, and do the right thing for Nigeria, and for God. The Biafran issue concerns all Nigerians, and security of our nation. A country at war, with its self, counterbalances, peace with the source of supplies for insurgency cells in the country. It's a complex theory of politics, rhetoric often evaluated like a chess game, averting the truthful resolution, mandatory for civil, democratic rule.

In my 1st year in the university I lived in 'Zik's Flats', a stone throw from his Onuiyi Haven mansion in Nsukka. We often strolled past his compound on one ocassion I spotted him relaxing in the balcony upstairs. That was a rare sight.

⁠Granted that appreciation is best expressed in life and not in eulogy, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was a true man of the people. If you understood his history, you would not have made your myopic comment. For a start: Zik was born in Zunguru in Northern Nigeria. He went to grade schools in Calabar in South South Nigeria and Lagos in Southwest Nigeria. The KEYWORD is Nigeria. He lived in Ghana on his way to and from the United States. He unsuccessful faught for the unity of Africa. Zik was proficient in the 3 major languages of Nigeria. He helped secure Nigerian independence without a bloodshed. Reading the biography of this GREAT African Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe before and several times after my arrival in America, has tremendously helped me in these United States. You should read it too. As aforementioned, I believe in appreciation while people are living. However, Zik deserves our respect just like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Amino Kanu, Adaka Boro, Akanu Ibiam, Margaret Ekpo, and so many others. Finally, in what culture (in the world) were you raised that does not respect the elders and the dead?

There's no part of Igboland that Zik didn't have streets,roads and avenues named after him.Nnamdi Azikiwe Univerity is there and they have an annual lecture which have attracted eminent people from all over the world. He has a museum in Enugu. Nationally,The obverse of the N500 Naira note is Zik. The International Airport Abuja is named after him and many more. The most prominent was that his name was in the 1963 Republican Constitution of Nigeria. The whole politicians and the parliamentarians of that time agreed to accord him that rare honour because of his nationalistic efforts towards making Nigeria one. No other politician in Nigeria believed in Nigeria more than Zik and they acknowledged it with that rare honour. Nnamdi Azikiwe wrote some books but not as much as that of Koffi Kwaya (Kwame Nkurumah), again, zik was never the militant type. The youth will always tilt to militancy even if it has nothing to contribute.I think that was why people reference Nkurumah more than Zik.

I would appreciate if you could remind me of my comment you’re responding if possible. Nevertheless, all I see in your epistle are things that people did for Zik and not the significant things that Zik did for his people (region), country let alone Africa as a whole. Every politics is local; if your immediate constituency does not feel your impact or enjoy the dividends of democracy when you’re in power, you have failed. If you’re in doubt go over your epistle again to point out Zik’s significant contributions to his region to see where I’m coming from! Also, since you’re happy is major achievement is to have his name in 1963 constitution, it will interest you to know he was the one who opposed Awolowo when the latter wanted to include secession clause in that constitution. This is the bane of our problem today and his region is now championing separatist agenda! Therefore, if the accolades he enjoyed were sufficient to develop his region, then it shows in the way Southeast is today!

Zik worked hard for Nigeria, his intelligence and eloquence is unquestionable, his dreams of a unified Nigeria with the Balewa was misplaced, ultimately power was wrestled out of his hand as he was mocked by those that he empowered as a ceremonial president. His Igbo tribe were subjected to genocide during the war and it is hard not to describe ZIK as a Hausa Fulani pacifist. Zik is a decent gentleman you can see from his demeanour that he meant well for Nigeria BUT he did not fully understand the nature of North tribal politics. RIP Sir

He was the ONLY Nigerian leader that spoke Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa fluently. He was born in Zungeru in the North, by Onitsha parents in the Eastern Region. Then he grew up in Lagos. He understood the Hausa Fulani very well! He abhorred violence and blood-letting as a means to achieve a goal - a mistake IPOB is making today. Ojukwu was forced to fight to defend his region! That's different from what these nutheads of IPOB are currently doing. Nigerians should learn from Zik. He wasn't an Ethnic nationalist.

These are the kind of leaders we need to study in our schools so that they can be inspired. He was motivated by Abraham Lincoln et al.I'm awe stricken watching him recollect the details of his life with precision and eloquence. Today in the same country of ours, we have leaders who can't speak to us even when cajoled . Zik was head and shoulders above his contemporaries in his own philosophy of life.Clearly he was a man of peace who epitomised it and lived it thru. Unfortunately Nigeria is not anywhere near his dreams. I have not seen any comment by any notable person here or is that they viewed it and didn't bother saying anything? It is my dream that Nigerians would sit and agree on the type of government we want as Zik of Africa dreamt. Certainly not what we have at the moment.

As the Leader of the NCNC ( National Conversation Of Nigeria and Cameroon ) party which won the first General Elections in Nigeria in 1963 and Another great man, Obafemi Awolowo ( Awo ) Leader of the AG ( Action Group ) party came 2nd in that 1963 Nigeria General Elections. Zik’s NCNC did not obtain overall majority and as a result Zik and Awolowo agreed to form a COALITION GOVERNMENT but unknown to everyone and all the invited dignitaries which included the great Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana gathered in Owerri , Zik secretly made detour up NORTHERN NIGERIA over night and FORMED A COALITION GOVERNMENT with Tafawa Balewa’s Northern NCP (( National Congress Party ) which came 3rd in that General Elections. That move by Zik turned out to be a DEADLY MOVE, in the sense that Zik was out manoeuvred by Balewa and the Northern NCP. Zik was given the post of the PRESIDENT ( A CEREMONIAL ) and Balewa was made the PRIME MINISTER AND THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES. BALEWA WAS NOW THE THE HEAD OF STATE BECAUSE NIGERIA HAD THE PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. THE QUESTION IS, “ WHY DID ZIK STAB AWOLOWO AND THE ENTIRE SOUTH IN THE BACK. It is interesting to discover that Kwame Nkrumah was inspired by Zik to go to US for his university education. Another important revelation is that he was not originally bearing the name Kwame Nkrumah but Koffi Quayle. This is never captured in any biographical article and account of this iconic Ghanaian statesman. Hon Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was a great African. I am amazed by his sound intellectual capacity and ability to recall the events, personalities and processes that shaped his formative years and accomplishments as a scholar, journalist and first president of Nigeria.

He was a great Afrikan and a great military strategist. For democracy he was the first one to show the theory of democracy and how it is in practise. I like it when he says he discovered that Democracy is the government of the people by the people and for the people...not government officials and the military!!! When it comes to democracy we have the same problem all over the world. People elect a government and it's officials and the next thing is corruptions, betrayals, oppressions, and dictatorships...and people suffer and become afraid!!!

My first time of seeing a close and detailed interview with Dr. Azikiwe. In all, one thing stands out in his ideology. Inspired by my Dad, Mr Chidebem Mbonu, I have always believed that violence is never a solution to any discord. Any deed achieved with violence will also require violence to sustain it, so no Peace will ever Grace violence. This is the ideology of the G-ROLE Africa and we are inspired by my Dad and Dr. Azikiwe to stand firm on this ideology. Rest well Papas. 💜

And that was thé reason hé had problèm with Ojukwu because hé was telling Ojukwu that there was no need letting our people die all the more and at this point Ojukwu was standing a very big chance and our great father late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was asking him to take thé chance and save our people from death but Ojukwu insisted because at this point hé will never bow to Gowon and then lost the chance to chief Awolowo. Though I am not blaming Ojukwu for that mistake because as a man who loved his people hé had his own reasons but all thé blame goes to thé then Gowons led federal government that was not ready to follow abru agreement and then allowed thé hatred of some Nigerians towards thé Igbos to translate into gonacide which they committed against ndi Igbo.

On a personal note, he was impressionable both here on the media and when I first met this towering figure in person at Eko Hotel very many years ago in Lagos. Unfortunately his political prowess was bewitched by an unrealistic utopian ideal for humanity, not the least Nigeria. Had he extended the devotion and nurturing he had for his nuclear family to the preservation of his roots. It would be a different story for Nigeria today. He was a mere man and fallible hence the British and the Fulani oligarchs deceived him. Today his stock is paying the price for his folly and naivety, his intellect notwithstanding! I enjoyed the interview. Thanks!

Zik of Africa was a true intellectual giant; From Storer College at 21 to Lincoln University, to Howard University, to two Ivy Leagues - University of Pennsylvania and finally Columbia University for Ph.D. at under 30. ..not bad at all 💪 ; blessed with longevity, strength and sharp mental acuity at old age.

I am baffled that he never mentioned racism as a setback that was prevalent in those days. I believe his focus made racism a shadow behind him. Thank you!
