In this video we will go thru how to adjust the Stanadyne DS4 diesel fuel injection pump timing mounting position on the GM 6.5L diesel engines. This particular process is only performed after a out of specification Top Dead Center Offset (TDC Offset or TDCO) relearn result has occurred. Physically adjusting the injection pump is necessary, in this situation only, in order to bring the TDC offset back into GM shop manual factory specification. A worn timing chain can introduce as much as 4 degrees of timing variance. This series pump was used in Chevy, GMC, and Holden trucks of the GMT400 or old body style (OBS) variety as well as vans from the years 1994 thru 2002.
The engine illustrated in the video is the 1999 version of the L65 Turbo Charged VIN code F layout, but the timing adjustment procedure applies to all 6.5L engines with this series of electronic injection pump. The TDC offset procedure shown with the Tech2 scan tool may vary for pre-1996 vehicles though. A Tech2 scan tool and three specialized wrenches shown in the video will be required to perform this procedure.
NOTE: The TDCO is NOT the procedure to use when timing a new or used replacement injection pump, or even when reinstalling the original injection pump. You only perform this TDCO Learn procedure ONLY when:
- You replaced the PCM (new or used but different than original)
- You replaced the crankshaft sensor (new or used but different than original)
- You replaced BOTH the PCM and the crankshaft sensor (new or used for either but neither original)
- You replaced the entire engine (rebuilt or used where core engine components are not the originals)
The timing procedure for when you replace the injection pump is called TIME SET and I cover that in a different video here - • 1994 - 2002 GM OBS Tru...

WARNING: The torque value in the GM service manual shown at 44:07 for the upper intake manifold crossover bolts is WRONG on that particular page due to a typographical error during printing. Which explains why it didn't feel _right_ to me and fortunately I go with experience and gut in such situations as you saw in the video. The correct torque for the upper should have had 17 foot pounds printed!

Thank you for posting this video, it is incredibly helpful. I broke down and bought the made in Ghina Tech 2 tool and much to my surprise it worked well. Getting the sequence of the 45 sec pedal to the metal then 30 sec of ECM off was a huge pain. Onlty took about ten times...LOL. But I was able to get my way out of wack -2.29 down to 0 then back a little to -.79 (close enough) She runs soooo much better. The tool also told me that I had 14psi of boost at idle and 26psi of boost when my gauge says 13psi, so I know my sensor is bad. Got my 96 3500hd with the stock 6.5 running smooth. Thanks again

@@jasonhutchinson5144 Like I showed in the video, the timing on getting the scan tool to trigger the TDCO reset is rather finicky but it shouldn't take more than a couple of tries. If I had this problem I'd look over my sensor harness for damage/corrosion, and do a general check of the grounds the PCM uses as this feels like a problem getting the engine computer to recognize the input(s).

Extremely thorough video, very good descriptions and it came just at the proper time. I just had my 6.5LTD pump rebuilt and its in and running. You have a lot of room there to work compared to my 2001 van. You can barely see around the pump on a van even with all the air intake items removed all the way back to the turbo. Believe it or not the easiest way to work on a 6.5L van is to remove the dashboard which is actually not that difficult. Thanks for taking the time to video it all so well.

The tech 2 has a command to activate the relearn in the special function section, that way you don't have to do the pedal stuff. Also it has an area in the same spot for viewing the offset by commanding the pump to 0.0 and viewing actual.

Thanks, I don't get into much modification from GM factory work. I would presume such a mod would require a different PCM (from an older model year) to avoid a check engine light and throwing DTCs due to the lack of sensor feedback. If those were not concerns, you would still need to set the timing yes. I would suggest referencing the 1993 GM C/K truck factory service manual for how to set the timing for the Stanadyne mechanical DB-2 injection pump. As best I recall, 93 was the last year for mechanical before the electronic DS-4, and its PMD, replaced it in 1994.

Gracias y buen dia.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, you can use a Tech2 to set the TDC offset such as I did in the linked video changing the CKP sensor. But if it does not fall in within spec you have to manually adjust the pump to account for whatever drift or wear prevented that, which this video addressed. Yes, having the TDC outside of the factory service manual spec will give you more performance but it will also give you harder starting and louder chattering in North American Winters ;-) so I'm not a fan.

I have not yet done a video on fuel injector balancing. I am from the school of thought that without a DTC code or other drivability symptom such as a misfire or knock, this isn't something to pursue. This Tech2 test is only for isolating a particular cylinder contributing to the observed problem not as a regular maintenance item.

Whenever you replace the pump you need to set the timing using a Tech2 or equivalent tool as well as the TDC offset. That -1.41 TDC offset you have is not within the service manual spec for a 1996 and up (-0.75 would be the outer boundary) as shown at 13:59 but its up to you if you want to leave it where you are (lots of forum opinions on that but I prefer to do things the GM dealership way). So, I've got a 2001 with the 6.5L, just replaced the crank sensor and with a Tech2 scan tool the TDC offset relearn keeps coming back at about 2.20 degrees (positive). I check the injection pump timing and it is about 3.3 degrees average (super close to 3.5 degree spec). If I adjust the pump to get the TDC offset within spec then I will throw off the injection pump timing wont I?
@DrShock
@DrShock 3 жыл бұрын
Setting aside missing the steps of the Tech2 dance that can cause the relearn not to trigger at all, like I show in the video these TDCO adjustments are extremely small. Measured in a mm or so and within a specific +/- range the service manual calls out. This TDCO is something I would only expect to fall out of spec after two decades + from steel timing chain stretch in the normal just changing the CKP sensor out case. My understanding from the GM service manual is that as long as you don't stray from the range given, you won't affect the overall timing. Setting the base time on a 6.5L is a different Tech2 procedure, though still the mechanical steps with the pump. Still, if you have a situation falling outside the video I've done, you may want to get some other opinions first to be sure as setting the base timing is not something I can comment on.

Thanx. Not sure where you're reading that false trucks statement, but it would definitely be in the _fake news_ category. The Tech2, like the Tech1 that preceded it, was the one and only scan tool used by GM dealerships exclusively thru 2008 for *both* cars AND trucks and used in conjunction with GM's Techline Information System 2000 (TIS2000) Windows based software. In 2008 GM introduced the MDI scan tool, which along with the MDI 2, is the current gold standard for GM dealerships in conjunction with the online Techline Connect internet based software. I have done some Tech2 and MDI reviews on this channel in the past you might want to check out before making your purchase there too.

@DrShock
@DrShock 2 жыл бұрын
These sort of problems are incredibly difficult to debug over the internet, without physical inspection of the engine. Most likely fuel starvation though, imo. Could be multiple problems, including a PMD issue. Start with the starvation though. Some things you could look at are: - Connect a scan tool and determine if there are any DTCs to guide you - _Visually_ check fuel pressure at the "T" valve adjacent to the thermostat housing. Opening this T while the engine is idling should not cause it to stall (if it does suspect the fuel filter and/or lift pump). There should be a continuous stream thru the rubber hose attached to this valve, if a dribble the lift pump / fuel filter areas are again suspect. - Check fuel pressure with a gauge at this same T in place of the factory rubber hose outlet, you should see around 5psi, +/- 2psi. If these all check out, I'd start looking closer to the injection pump. Could be as simple as the fuel plumbing to the IP, or could be the IP itself. Again, not something one can debug over an internet comment board very effectively. ;-) Hope that helps.

@DrShock 3 жыл бұрын
What I showed here was adjusting the timing for the top dead center offset (TDC offset). If you're installing a brand new injection pump yeah there's an initial timing step that needs to be done first. I've personally not had to do that procedure yet so cannot provide pointers on it. But I do know it also requires a Tech2 scan tool (or Tech2Win emulator) and there is a section in the GM service manual about performing it with the Tech2. My advice would be to just follow that service manual guidance with your Tech2. If you don't have one, I believe I have an eBay link in the video description where you can get a CD-ROM version of the manual(s).

The snap on mt-2500 reads TDC offset and Desired and actual timing on my 97 gmc savana 6.5. It has a program called troubleshhooter that states that the actual timing should be set before setting the TDC offset. I realize this is an old scanner. But it has some bi-functional controls like turning on lift pump and glow plugs/controller. It read my tranny and abs. I bought it for my 94 grand cherokee and found out it works on my van also. I purchased it for under $300 too!! I know all this because the other day when I got home. My van just started clattering super loud. At first I figured a bad injector. But going the cheaper route first. I'm hoping it's the injector pump stepper motor that controls pump timing. Odd thing is my van will start and idle but the TDC offset reads -4.0. I don't see how it's even running. The desired timing is reading 10.5 degrees while actual timing reads 25.5 degrees. I prey the stepper motor will fix my problem. Anyhow, I was just outside with the mt-2500 hooked up and was surprised to see that info available. Go snap on!!

Hello, I have a 2000 Chevy 3500 short school bus with a 6.5 diesel turbo. Recently I replaced the fuel injection pump. It is running but sometimes when I am at a stoplight for no reason at all it will act like I've jolted the gas pedal, sometimes it sounds like it's going to die but catches itself before it happens, and it seems to take just a little bit to start up. Would a TDC relearn/ injection pump adjustment solve these problems? Also I am getting around 9 mpg do you think that will improve as well?
@DrShock
@DrShock Жыл бұрын
For a surge like that, I'd first suspect the pump mounted driver or PMD. This is a small electronics module mounted on the LH side of the injection pump, or more preferably remotely elsewhere in the truck. If you got a new rebuilt injection pump, it should have came with a new one of these PMD modules and be under warranty for you.

I am not getting a code a to relearn, and also when I rotate my pump it doesn't change any values in GMTDscan. any ideas of what's going on?
@DrShock
@DrShock 3 жыл бұрын
First you have to be using a GM Tech2 scan tool, or a J2534 tool that supports running the GM Tech2Win application on a laptop. Aftermarket scan tools _might_ work, but at best they typically won't give the same timing offset value range as the GM service manual so you'll have to manually translate/convert them. Second, as I showed in the video this is a very specific procedure (aka dance) with the scan tool and if you don't follow the service manual instructions _exactly_ it won't go into TDC offset relearn mode. The dance with the key on, accelerator pedal down, and the wristwatch time durations around all that have to be held to a no more no less kind of approach. It may take a couple of attempts, it does even for me, but it will relearn if you have a Tech2/Tech2Win tool. Lastly, you won't see anything rotating the pump alone, you have to get the PCM to enter relearn mode to pick up a new TDC offset otherwise the scan tool will just be given the stale old value over and over. This is why this job really is impossible to do without a scan tool. Folks think they've done it without one, but screenshot or it didn't happen I say. ;-)

Not exactly sure what you're asking about as we're not working with the fuel filter in view with the focus of this video. We're looking primarily at the injection pump housing attachment area at the front part of the engine. The fuel filter housing would be to the rear of the engine. Perhaps you're asking about the cylindrical fuel shut-off solenoid showing in this view? Regardless, the answer is I always use a ACDelco brand filter inside a genuine GM filter housing and _separate_ locking ring that secures the black plastic cover.

My question is when you changed the offset did the pump timing change? @.21 it shows 11deg and the first video shows 10.6. If so how much did it change.
@DrShock
@DrShock Жыл бұрын
Right, we're only focused on resetting the TDC offset in this vid which remains constant once set. The actual engine timing, on a 1997 and later design 6.5L, is going to change within the Tech2 view during a given run so you won't see a fixed value. This will come from both the PCM making frequent electronic timing adjustments, which includes the TDC offset value, and from the flex effects caused by timing chain wear. I would expect to see the value _float_ from run to run, but remain within service manual specification. If not, then there's a whole different procedure for setting the actual initial engine timing with the Tech2 covered here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM-iZJt90ZvQY4U.html

There's no software card issue like that with a Tech2. Perhaps the person is recollecting how the Tech1 worked. With a Tech2 the memory cards are only for non North American brands like SaaB or Isuzu. The regular North American brands, which would include the Chevrolet and GMC C/K trucks are all on the one card. What you do _might_ need is the OBDI connector for the end since yours is before 1996. Reading out any trouble codes is where I would start. But it may still be that whatever you are experiencing is within tolerance enough that the PCM isn't complaining yet. Unfortunately this sort of symptom could be due to more than one cause. Not something you'll be able to easily diagnosis over a chat forum imo. But if no codes, I would next check fuel flow rate for a fuel delivery obstruction to eliminate clogged fuel sender sock or fuel filter. If RPMs are responsive to accelerator pedal position, and the transmission is an automatic, then I would more likely go with delayed engagement problems in the transmission instead.

@DrShock
@DrShock 4 ай бұрын
A code 35 on the 1995 and earlier PCMs is going to be a fuel injection pulse width being out of specification. Still a lot of causes, but at least the code localizes you to the fuel delivery system. Verify your lift pump is operating correctly fuel flow wise, and that the fuel filter is not restrictive (i.e., past the change interval). If you have a spare PMD, this would be a condition where swapping could save alot of diagnostic time. On the 6.5L engines with the DS4 injection pump throwing any sort of fuel delivery code, the PMD module is often worth checking first. Worst case though, it can be a problem with the DS4 itself, such as a faulty optical fuel sensor internally.
