Always reminds me of James May's first test on Top Gear. He summed up the enormous running cost by saying: "Honestly, you'd have to be a complete idiot to buy an old Bentley. This one's mine"

As an everyday car you are absolutely right. As a classic, used for a few thousand miles a year, they are relatively affordable and in recent years have also appreciated in value. Not as scary as you might think although head gaskets are an issue on the Turbo cars.

I’ve driven very expensive cars in my life and on them for numerous amounts of years without having to do any major services on them because I don’t drive them very much. If you’re owning these types of vehicles and you already own a reliable vehicle for daily use that it’s not that big of a deal if you’ve got the money to burn.

I run a Continental R which shares much with the Turbo R. When I bought mine I needed to catch up on a few jobs but overall it's been very reliable, in fact, we are about to go on a 3,000 mile road trip across Europe. Like your example I get 23mpg on a run which is only 3 miles worse than our 325i BMW. They say the 6.75ltr V8 is almost indestructible and it sure feels that way. Progress is swift and very Bentley satisfying. At 70mph the rev clocks reading around 1500rpm which is where all the toque can be found. No doubt interesting vehicles which have been hand crafted by the good people at Crewe. To be honest, I suspect I appreciate it more than the first owner who perhaps bought it just because they could.

Reading this comment 10 months after you posted - hope your road trip went well? Would be good the hear an update if you still have your car? Always liked these back in the day but wondered how usable one would be today, and the cost of running parts wise, I know the fuel costs will be fairly high. Just wonder on the age the turbo needs replacement and the situation on head gaskets which are an issue on higher performance Arnage’s….

That wood looks like burr walnut - or more commonly known, walnut burl. Walnut burl came from the burl of walnut tree, which is an abnormal growth on tree trunk which, when cut, created a much more complex, intricate and random pattern than the usual wood pattern, usually caused by injuries or viral infection. Since the process of harvesting burl can end in the tree's death, obtaining one is difficult and regulated, usually only available for harvesting when said tree is already dead. This is why walnut burl panel on cars tend to be more expensive than other veneers, only comparable with rarer type of wood like Koa wood from Hawaii, used both for guitar making as well as an option for wood veneers on new Bentleys.

Mine needed headgaskets at 30k miles. £5.5k at an indie. I swapped the front shocks for better ones. That was £5k. A door lock went. That was £1.5k. With other bits and bobs it was £14k in one year. This was 10 yrs ago. I’d have another in a heartbeat. 😂

Great to see the finished product! I had a great morning filming and chatting away about cars with you, and although you decided it's ultimately not for you, it's clear you really appreciated it and its charm. It was originally sold for a bit over £122000 as you said, but I wanted to point out that's how much the factory sold it to the dealer, with a pretty hefty discount. I can't imagine what the dealer then sold it for! If I ever end up with another unusual car I'll definitely be in touch again

@@goodfest007Sure thing! The first session in the garage was around £4.5k, that was for a new indicator stalk, resealing the four front calipers, new front discs and pads (all 8 of them!), replaced some of the power steering pipes, and 5 new tyres (that was £1400 on its own I think). Next visit was £2.5k, for a 6000 mile service, new thermostat and sender, replaced one of the rear spring pots, accessory belts and a couple of engine mounts and a few other bits and pieces. Next was £1000 to sort the alarm and tachometer out, then £3500 to cut out the rear wheel arches and a chunk of the front ones and repair and paint them. The arches do tend to go on these, I knew they needed doing when I bought it but it was a bit worse than I thought. After that there was a £3300 bill to sort the air con and a spare key, recondition the radiator and replace the rear gas spheres, and £800 to remove a bit of rust between the headlights and the bonnet. That takes us up to when the video was filmed, since then I've had a bushing replaced which annoyingly took one of the tyres with it, with a full alignment that ended up being £1200, then another £840 for MOT and service (oil change, new filter and washers, transmission fluid change). I'm coming up on three years of ownership in May, the vast majority of these costs have been in the first two years. I still have the car and use it regularly, I did just over 160 miles in it this weekend, and it still puts a great big smile on my face every time I drive it. I say go for it, but buy the best example you can afford!

Highly recommend an Arnage. I used to chauffeur a couple of chaps about in them over several years, some of them armoured, some with various degrees of mulliner treatment, and I loved them all. The final series turbo cars were absolutely wonderful, and surprisingly good to hussle down a road. Tyres were critical though - on Pirellis I found them unpredictable and no fun at all, but on Continentals or Michelins you could feel them move around underneath you as you got close to the limit. Miss them very much!

I have loved the Bentley Turbo R for many years. I remember in the early 2000s, a Bentley and Lanbourghini car show room opened near to where I live. I went into look at the cars. Two things stood out. 1. I read the Bentley brochure on the coffee table. In the part talking about Bentley servicing, it said, "The expected servicing costs for a Bentley for three years was £10,000! I then had a walk around the Lamborghini's. There was a youngish man talking about buying a Lamborghini. 2. He said to the salesman " the only problem is they are not very practical. " The salesman without batting an eye replied, " we have customers who buy a Bentley for the week days and a Lamborghini for the weekend." I had to go round the corner quick before I burst out laughing......

My current and first car is a 1988 Bentley Eight (the entry level to the Turbo R flagship) Bought for £4500 last summer with a very lucky last minute bid. The car arrived Mot’d and running perfectly. Unfortunately due to being 17 at the time and in the UK the insurance quote was £18,000. However temp insurance every couple days did the trick for a nice trip to the pub and was just beautiful to drive. Only broke down once (3 days after purchase) when going up a hill and a cable for the immobiliser relay shorted. Moved the cable and everything was fine again. I absolutely love that car however they have now doubled in price from around £5k to £10k meaning they’re starting to get recognition. Also makes me happy that I got it so cheap (with only 60k miles)

Ha! I had a ‘96 Turbo R til last year, in the rare and perfect spec of metallic Aurora Green over cream leather. Utterly beautiful. Amazing to drive - felt genuinely as quick as my very rapid DB7 Vantage, despite having no right to on paper. However - it broke my heart. I never once pointed it any further than the nearest town 5 miles away, and even then only a handful of times. It spent an inordinate amount of time on my Trusty Mechanic’s ramp, and no matter what we did or what I spent it would always find new and novel ways of justifying post-run engine smoke or the Check Engine warning light. Realising that I’d spent half its purchase price again on maintenance with still no prospect of ever being able to relax while driving it, I swapped it for a Silver Shadow and an Audi Coupé. My then 3 year old cried when it went - she loved doing the occasional school run in it and steering it around the lawn. Truth be told, I still miss it sometimes. But I guess my Corniche will have to suffice.

Hi James; I owned a Turbo R for 2 years, having bought it from a charming lady who'd had it from nearly new and used it daily. Huge history records and it really did pay off. I could have bought a little used item for less, or a project for a lot less. I used the car daily and kept it serviced and oil changed regularly and, apart from fuel, the car cost me the enormous sum of £48 for headlight bulbs! I did a few weddings (I've owned limousines) which helped and eventually sold the car - for £3,000 more than I'd paid for it. Happy days. If you really want a fast, fun, sedate and grand car with 4 seats; may I suggest a 1999 Lexus LS400 with dynamic handling? I know that's a bit old, but it insures as a classic, returns low to mid 30s mpg on a run; does 155mph with ease and in superb comfort and, because there aren't too many around, has great presence. Particularly in a dark colour. These are the last of the LS400's and really are a breed apart. Far better than a 430, 460 and more practical than an LS600h. I think you'd really enjoy one of these cars.

I had the pleasure of detailing a dark Green turbo R a few years ago, the panels just went on and on, hand painted red shoulder line too. For those handy with a spanner, they are easy to work on (including Citroën-derived system). Parts prices can be high but not always. The main issue is prior owners not maintaining them properly. A well-sorted example is a joy and is in a class of its own.

@michaelmontagu3979 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with you about the prior owner issues. I'm the second owner of a 1965 Silver Cloud III, which I've owned for 41 years. I keep it regularly serviced and, as you say, any good mechanic can look after it. Unlike the new Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars. The problem does come when the price is low enough to appeal to the buyer who wants a prestige car but finds that they can't afford to maintain it properly. That really is when the problems start.

Love these cars, another great product of the past and still a force to be reckoned with as far as comfort and looks and the pride in ownership of a classic. The things that let it down are firstly the big one, head gaskets, find one that has had them replaced probably abound 60k miles they seem to go, and you have a chance of saving a lot of money. There are niggly things such as brake pipes failing (luckily mine was on the drive) and window motors can be a problem. The other thing to be aware of is electrics, hugely expensive to sort out at a specialist if some problems arise, but what a ride these cars give, well worth a try and then part with once you feel you have spent enough on it. Thanks for this, great video and well worth a look in!

I've had a drive of one of these and when I say a Drive I mean I gave it a good seeing to!! Beautiful interior and the Shag pile carpet and the slab of Tree was impressive! But the reason I had it was I was asked by my Father in Law to help him return the Car to a Car Dealer friend who had leant it to him for Great Parent in Laws anniversary. But my Father in Law is also a Petrol head and has had plenty of Fast cars and at the time had an Exige S1. But instead of Taking it easy, on the fact that I had to follow him to the owners house/mansion because i had no idea where he lived, I then lost him! Because this is such a big car, quick and leaned quite a lot in the corners and Brakes which had a lot to contend with, and was the first Automatic Car i has Driven, i wasn't ready to drive the wheels of this Barge. But once into the swing of things it had plenty of Power and grip but would roll, like a Defender. Eventually I caught up at the house and the Bentleys Brakes smoking and Tyres pretty warm😅 I felt guilty for putting this poor car through the mill but judging by the Owners Mansion and his Plethora of Ferraris I'm sure he could afford the bills!!

Interesting video... I managed a dealership that sold these when they were current, and the new Bentley customer could not have been more different from the traditional Rolls buyer. We saw people who were looking at big Benzes and Bimmers, and those folks simply did not bother with Bentleys before. Mind you, the Bentley was rather more costly to run, compared to the big Germans, even when new. Now, the cost of maintenance and repairs can be truly ruinous. The engines and transmissions are pretty bulletproof, but there are electrical gremlins and the suspension can cost a stunning amount to overhaul. The brakes are costly, but not so bad as the suspension. Small items like the switchgear, which can be expected to fail with age, are eye-wateringly expensive and (in some cases) quite difficult to source. The interior trim and hides can be had, but can cost more than you imagine, even if you have a VIVID imagination. All told, entertaining to drive, great for your image, excruciating to own.

I feel like it's time to get something more mature and relaxing but if this is going to be a headache, I'll stick with the Rev 5 I was looking at.

Interesting car. I recall, before the pandemic, of course, being at a doctor's surgery and reading an old CAR magazine. There was an article about this model and the only thing I can recall about the article is a mention of the suspension. My dear departed fathers best buddy……. back in the 70’s had a Shad ll, which never impressed……. His Volvo 164e on the other hand, was sublime…… later, another “colourful” family friend had a mean and moody looking, new Turbo R…… sporting the numberplate TUR80 (which I note is on a 2012 V8 Conti GTC now)…….. whilst I nursed a steady stream of old knackers, it always amused me…… the look on my neighbours faces when TUR80 was sat outside our tumble-down house 🇬🇧🙂 Another infamous local scrap dealer inherited a nearly new Silver Wraith ll, in the late 1970’s, which ended up after 20+ years of studied neglect, looking like a banger racer……. Local folklore said that Grange Brentwood (Rolls Royce) tried on behalf of Rolls, to buy it back, merely to hide it from view. A vision in dark emerald green, red oxide and holes….. 🙂🇬🇧 I recovered it to an Essex specialist once, with a broken drive shaft, a massive jagged hole in the boot floor, no rear bumper and a bent rear panel (boot tied shut) The mechanic looked whilst it was on my truck and said he didn’t understand how the drive shaft could have damaged the floor….. then the owner told him……😳 He’d tried to tow start a Volvo Artic, with a full bulk scrap trailer - using the bumper, which came off. So, obviously, he bashed a hole in the boot floor and wrapped a chain……. tow started the Volvo, successfully, but broke the drive shaft in the process……… of course 🤪 Legend……. if I hadn’t moved the car many many times, I would not have believed it. Both the car and its owner are long gone now……. his stately home is a Wedding venue and his scrap yard, a posh housing development 🙁 ………… progress……… Excuse me rambling and reminiscing 🙂

Hi Jay, enjoyed this video on the Bentley Turbo R.. First time ever I thought I would try Carvertical...!!! Ok so a little about the car I am interested in is a Bentley Turbo R.. a1993 example its not got great mileage on it around 110.000 miles Its been stood or not MOT since 2018 around time of Covid19.. It a green car with beige trim green interior not totally fussed on Green but have had two green cars in my car history I am more into blue colours.. My present cars are A Mercedes CLK convertible 320 on 52 plate I mot it every year and owned it since 2016 and purchased it for £1200 pounds it was my dream car from around 1999 when me n a mate used to go around garages on a Sunday looking at cars and at the time they was around £20k -to £40k. My other car is a Vauxhall Astra Bertone 2.2 its a 52 plate with private plate worth £700 and gave £350 with no mot.. owned since again end of 2016. Then I have my daily runabout an Audi A6 2.7tdi Estate I gave £1650 back in 2020 I put set of Avon tyres costing £380 a service at £180 wiper blades £26.. So not a great amount it good on fuel. Then I have my van a Ford Transit High top van older 2014 shape and this was purchased in 2017 on finance over 5 years and recently had a service £235 plus I added 2 front tyres £210 and paid my insurance in full All that said Bentley is on my bucket list to own. Now the registration is odd.. V01319 so put that on CV but nothing.. So with 10% discount you get 2 reports for £32.00ish.. Is this right..? I've done most of my searches on free platform and Flyspares.co.uk for my parts prices and you just mentioned a cost of 5 tyres. My personal opinion this car needs paintwork and interior work I have my ideas rolling restoration. Now the big issue I don't have a garage or storage and presently live in a housing Association 1 bed 3rd floor flat where my cars get vandalized regular. But my ill health will require me to like 6 years ago.. ha ha ha What stops me buying a top car is VANDALISM..!!!!!

That RR L series engine was designed in the mid 1950s, and was, but the standards of the day, had decent power to weight ratio with the aluminium block. However, what does set it apart, was that it was extremely strongly built, in part for longevity, in part to be refined. It did, of course, have some internal changes over the year, but in its final form it had almost 3 times the power and torque of the original, but which time it had been in production for 61 years.

I've owned a '93 Turbo R for around 8 years. It's a weekend car rather than an everyday drive. If you are handy with a set of spanners (and a multimeter) then you can run one at a reasonable cost. Parts backup is good from Flying Spares and Introcar. Bowing Engineering will rebuild ecu's if required and are very reasonable. The RR & B forum is excellent for technical help. If you have to rely on specialists for everything then it will be a costly exercise but these are complicated cars built on basic technology. If you are technically minded you will be fine For me, half the fun of owning one is the satisfaction of sorting out a problem. Good video, the best advice always being to buy the best one you can find. I did and haven't regretted it. These are 30 year old cars so don't expect them to be perfect. The advice for any (pre mass produced era) Bentley, Royce or Landrover is to regularly check the garage floor for signs of oil leaks. If there aren't any then you need to check your levels.

Love these cars and this one is in a gorgeous colour combination. However they were hopelessly outdone by the V12 w140 S-class and BMW 7 series of the time. This model Bentley was effectively a chassis from the late 70’s but still on sale in the late 90s.

More like late 60's really, it's not a huge move away from the Silver Shadow/T series that preceded it. From Sydney, Australia. Define outdone , and MORE IMPORTANTLY , what price life ?? At REAL WORLD SPEEDS, and if you wish to die, then pick the German "junkers". When in heaven, just ask Princess Diana, re her experience with a real-world speed accident in a w140 Merc. In 2001 , when taking my niece to Sydney Airport at Mascot we witnessed what happens if you skitch a Rolls Royce Flying Spur onto a recalcitrant W140 Merc' at the same real world impact speed. let me tell you if you were in the Merc, your day had just been numbered as final. Total fool Mercedes w140 driver made an illegal right turn directly in front of the Rolls Royce Flying Spur, this Bently's twin at identical speeds. OUTCOME, Rolls Royce EXTERMINATED ALL the w140 OCCUPANTS at an equal 100kph/60mph impact speed. The Mercedes basically self-destructed on impact breaking up the same as Princess Di's car had 4 years prior. The occupants of Rolls stepped out of a car with an extremely bashed up front clip (front nose cone, bonnet & front mudguards) awaiting the arrival of the police. Whereas all the bodies of deceased in the Mercedes only needed but the morgue. Fact. Was also depicted on all the TV news due to the traffic hold ups caused. The Crewe cars are solid bespoke cars and an almost road fortress, the Mercedes overrated Euro trash.

@@gregharvie3896 Hi Greg - very interesting to hear your observations regarding the safety of these old cars. I suppose their weight, design and construction does make them a sort of castle on wheels. To answer your question about how the these Bentleys and Rolls’ were outdone by the w140 (and contemporary 7 series) I would suggest the following points for consideration: 1. Handling and chassis design. The old Crewe cars were way behind in terms of braking, cornering and active safety systems such as traction and stability control. That’s unavoidable when the basic chassis design dates back to the 1960’s and 1970’s. In fact these old Crewe cars didn’t get fuel injection and ABS until about 86. And I don’t think stability control or side airbags ever appeared on them unlike the Germans. 2. The V12 engine. The fact is that the Germans moved the game on by offering a V12. The old Crewe cars offered a V8 engine that also dated back to the 1960’s. It was tragic to see Crewe’s refusal to quote horsepower figures because everyone knew they were embarrassingly low compared to the V12 Mercedes and BMW at the time. 3. Features and options. Have a close look at the Crewe cars and you’ll see odd things like seat belts that were black rather than matched to the interior colours. This was almost unforgivable in cars that claimed to be the height of bespoke luxury. For comparison the 1996 model E-class was available with belts that matched the interior colour but not a Rolls / Bentley costing four times as much. The w140 offered variable assistance power steering which Crewe cars never had. The BMW and Mercedes both offered a five speed automatic which again never appears on the cars from Crewe. I also don’t think parking sensors or satellite navigation ever appeared as factory options in the 90s for Rolls or Bentley whereas they certainly did for Mercedes and BMW. 4. Performance and aerodynamics - sadly a mid level w140 or 7 series from the 90s could outpace the Crewe cars in both acceleration and top speed whilst returning much better fuel consumption. You didn’t need a V12 Benz or BMW to trounce the Crewe cars in terms of pace. Aerodynamics were also a major issue for the Crewe cars. Having driven all of them at motorway speeds the low wind noise and cross wind stability of a w140 or 7 series were on a different planet to the Rolls / Bentley of the 1990s. The W140 was also assisted by having double glazed windows as standard which greatly reduced noise from the outside. And, subjectively, I felt the w140 was quieter inside than the 90’s Rolls or Bentley. Subjectively, the Crewe cars are utterly charming and wonderful. Objectively, I hope you can see why they were indeed hopelessly outdone by their German rivals.

@@gregharvie3896 so to sum up your comprehensive post, if you plan to hurtle through a Paris underpass at highly illegal speeds whilst being chased by a pack of photographers on motorcycles, your preferred car to crash in is the Bentley and not a Mercedes. For what these cars are (I’m on my tenth Bentley turbo R) they are magnificent….yes, they are very fast for weighing almost 6,000 lbs. Statistically -> my 1997 Bentley Turbo R has 385 horsepower and 569 ft. lbs. of torque and a top speed limited to 150 mph. Yes, these are expensive cars to maintain, yes, these cars are often abused, but, I assure you, if you can buy the best one you can afford and you maintain it…you won’t need another car for the rest of your lifetime. This car is quick now and was super fast back in the 90s. Build quality is above anything that has been produced, new today. The only rival would be a new Rolls Royce or Bentley. To give you an idea of power and whatnot feels like, picture sitting in an 747, 757 or 777 at the beginning of an airport runway….engines at ready state…then you apply the throttle…and you are gently pushed back in your seat as the power builds…that, my friends is the feeling you get in a Bentley Turbo…there is never any point in the power band that you would say, gosh, I wish I had more power…simply plant your right foot and wait for the power to begin. Drive one, buy one….and maintain it.
