Grade 1 winner and millionaire Dare and Go died on Sunday in Queensland, Australia, during surgery for colic. Best known for ending Cigar's winning streak at 16 races by beating him in the 1996 Pacific Classic, Dare and Go was 10.
Dare and Go, a son of Alydar and Partygoer (Secretariat) had been standing his second Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Vatana Farm. Dare and Go stood the 2001 Northern Hemisphere season at Vinery but was to stand next year at Pin Oak Lane Farm in New Freedom, Pa. Dare and Go stood in 2001 for $5,000 and covered 48 mares.
Trained by Richard Mandella, Dare and Go won the Pacific Classic and one other Grade 1 race, the 1995 Strub Stakes, during a transatlantic career. In France, he was Group 2-placed before coming to the United States. He retired at the end of the 1996 season with a record of 22-7-7-5.
