1996 Jeep XJ Ignition Switch Replacement

2 жыл бұрынReplacing the ignition switch in my 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ plus an unhappy surprise requiring me to replace the ignition cylinder.
I am not a mechanic, but I do enjoy working on my own vehicles. These videos are intended for general information and guidance. Do your own homework and research before attempting any auto repair. Always consult a professional when in doubt.

What a cheap and silly design for the locking cylinder... mine did the same thing and left me stranded a ways from home late last night. But Your video saved me a whole BUNCH of hassle, time, and headache. It's already fixed this morning thanks to you! Thanks!

That broken "hat" that engages the ignition switch on the end is a common break on 95-96 XJs. If you can get the "Hat" off you can swap the lock cylinder itself, so you can keep your original key, but it's a PITA to get that hat off the end without breaking things apart. Certainly a lot easier ot use the new key along with your old one, just more inconvenient.

Someone on the XJ Preservation Society FB page told me the same thing. It is a pain to use two keys, but it has worked OK. Had to do this in the 99, and it was so easy - keyed right to existing.

If any of you are stuck/stranded because of this problem remove the lock cylinder and use needle nose to crank your Jeep for the time being.

I have a problem with mine i got an 88 jeep Cherokee 4wd 6cy 4.0l xj when i turn the key it cranks but once i let go of the key it just shuts off

So I have a 1996 jeep Cherokee and it wants to start without a key in the ignition I replaced the starter and have the same issue do you thinking doing this would fix it

If it’s starting without the key, it seems like the ignition lock cylinder would be the problem. Hate to tell you to throw parts at it, but may be worth a shot.

So wasn’t the ignition switch . Was the key cylinder that caused failure ??

I took this off but can't remove the cylinder it's was locked,but does this part come with a new cylinder?I'm no mechanic,just going off utube.

Yes, part came with new cylinder. It was super easy to do. Wish they made them for the pre 97. I have to use two keys on one of my 1996s.

I think it stays on temporarily and fades out.

I forget the time frame but it comes on anytime a door is opened then fades out after a bit.

It was only about $40 at the auto parts store.
