Yeah the best "normal" M3 is the 3.2 E36 EVO M3. But the best overall, with the special edition, is in my opinion the M3 CSL.

ExactlyPrecisely It was found in the E28 M5 as well as the E34 M5, and the M635CSi too. It was first 3.5 then 3.8 liters making something like 280 to 340hp, which is nice. This is the engine that went to the first M5, creating a benchmark of it's own segment, later joined by the E AMG and the RS6.

Wow, this sounds similar to my father's old 1994 Supra Turbo 6 speed, minus the whistling sound from the turbos. I always loved the way that car sounded. He owned it from 1994... Maybe it was late 1993, until 1996. E36 M3... Awesome machine! Thanks for the video guys!!

Sort of. Europe was fortunate enough to have a S50B32 which made 315 bhp, while the U.S. had the S50B32US with 240 bhp. The EU version had a freer breathing intake manifold with 6 individual throttle bodies, along with stouter rear axles and differentials. However the U.S. version had shorter rear gearing to make up for the deficit in power and acceleration was on par with Europe's. But let's not forget Europe also had the clear turn signals and gorgeous glass ZKW headlights. Sigh...

Everyone knows that BMW conservatively rates their cars. And referring to Wikipedia only repeats it. The E36 M3 typically has a bit more than 240hp stock. Around 265hp and some test sites have the figure at 285hp.

The US M3 has a 3L/3.2L L6 with 243 HP, not 143HP, the European one has 300HP.

is it me or has this m3 been turbocharged? it sounds like it has boost, sounds like it starts spooling around 4k, a large-ish A/R GT35R possibly?

I don;t think so. I have a '98 and it sounds the same. At 4k it just opens up and really pulls. Oh and BTW I see his passenger side air bag light is on as well.

Rik Warren maybe it was my crappy laptop speakers and the sound of the wheel slipping through his hands, i just rewatched the vid with my Scion Edition headphones (got 'em from the Scion Racing tent at Formula D Round 6 at Texas Motor Speedway) and it does sound exactly like my m3.

By the way, Is that E36 fully stock or is the engine some how modified or maybe the exhaust ? can some on tell ? sounds so good but dont know if stock, planning to buy it soon actually its on the way have to wait 2 weeks coming from germany SO HAPPY!

Sorry guys, but I'm quite sure this is a 32x with a swapped instrument cluster. I own a 325 myself and you can also check out Autocarnerd's 325 POV drive here on YT. A lot of intake noise and definitely not the sexy Le Mans screaming sound of the 3.0 or 3.2, not even remotely.

It is most definatly an M3, although north american E36 M3's are just a hopped up 328 bored to 3000cc. S50 not S52

S50 3.0/3.2 = EU version S52 3.0 = Modified M52, US version I haven't driven the M3 but it would certainly sound strange for an S50.

+RÅLAND Hi I'm planning on actually starting a project car with an E30 but I won't be using the standard motor that came with the car. My question is I've been reading alot up on both the S50 and S52 motors however the S50 seems to be the preferred choice of many E36 enthusiasts but I was wondering if I bought the motor would I feel that I missed out on anything the S52 has to offer?

Gareth Sassman I'm not sure, but I guess not. I think you can look it up on Bimmerforums or so. S50 is the way to go, S52 is so underpowered you're better off with an M50 and tuning it.

That's true because E36 M3 US have 3.2 143hp and EU have 321hp omg even EU 3.0have more then 3.2 US and that is 286 E36 M3 EU :) Dont understand why thay do that to M3 :(

yup only 240hp unfortunately. Cheaper parts were used causing less hp because of the reduce of costs to ship them over to the U.S.

Yes I actually like the us spec more because it has a much more linear growth pattern of power over the eu spec. It was less powerful because of emissions and the lack of ITBs
