As someone that covered a lot of miles in my 3 door Mini Metro seeing this video is utterly horrific! The magnitude of the deformation and intrusion into the cabin utterly beggars belief! A driver in this type of collision may reasonably be determined to have died or to have sustained catastrophic injuries, particularly to their lower limbs! Funnily enough, I never thought too much about crashing in my Mini 850 City or my Mini Metro, which is probably just as well...

My parents had this car when I was kid. We made quite some kilometers with it with me sitting in the passenger seat. The car felt quite sturdy, but appearances can be deceiving. I'm glad we never had a crash. My mom later had a Rover 200 and had a pile-up collision with that. It hardly had a scratch. While the Ford Ka she impacted was a write-off. I guess the Rover 200 was much safer than the 100.

Michael, at the time it was launched, it was as tough as any equivalent Fiesta, Renault 5 or Nova of the time. It started to fail these ever stringent safety tests in the late 90s. The fact it was still in production then, boasting an 18 year production run, was testament to it's popularity.

Exactly the same issue with the original Mini that also had a basic design dating from the late 50's with hardly a thing done to it. To add salt to the wound so many new cars came out during the production of Mini's and Metro's whilst BL was too busy getting screwed over by the government by refusing to invest money in new designs and treating the workers like shite. It wouldn't end there since Rover got sold off privately so it's owners could bleed them dry of profits and again leaving no money for investment on new designs. It's sad how it ended.

@@jaggass To be fair the Mini wasn't particularly crash worthy even for a car from the late '50s. Alec Issignois was confronted about this and said that if somebody got into a crash in a Mini it was their own fault.

I loved my metro rio. I used too show my friends these crash tests then take them out in the car and find my big hill a do 110 off the clock. I had adult men cry in the back of that car literally lol

Had my Rio up to 110 on the A2 to Dartford,trying to keep up with my mates, the steering wheel started to shake like buggery,..."oh shit, back it off a bit" No one believed the performance from that little 1.1 K series. Had her up 90 loaded 4 up with luggage too.Glad I never got into a big Bingle with it though

It's worth bearing in mind that this is the equivalent of a Metro hitting another Metro coming in the opposite direction at the same speed. If the Metro hit a larger/heavier/stronger car the result would be worse.

It might not be as bad - most modern cars have proper crumple zones which could absorb more impact than the deformable barrier in the test. I wouldn't like to try it though.

@@markf4720 most modern cars are also significantly heavier than the Rover 100 and their crumple zones are designed to progressively deform based on their mass, not that of the opposing car. As you say I'd rather not try it.

To be fair take a look at anything else which is contemporary (even in '97) in the same segment & the test results look remarkably similar. Nova, Fiesta, Cinq & even the Saxo/106 all look very similar. It wasn't until the mid 2000s that small cars actually got to a reasonable level of performance (remember the ratings are all relative & against a moving segment baseline). The 100 got a bit of a poor rap - I'm not saying that it is anyway good, just comparable!

The Rover 100 was actually considerably worse than it's contemporaries. If I recall it got a 1 star. Even at 30mph, a head on crash was something you wouldn't have walked away from....

@@roddenshaw The Seicento was a heavily restyled Cinquecento, a car from 1991, and the Saxo was based on the 80s AX. Many late 90s small cars were recycled from late 80s /early 90s models. A more modern late 90s design, like the first Smart, sliced through these tin cans without deforming, there was in fact some crash test proving it.

Notice how the steering column has already been thrust forward and up by the time the mushroom-like airbag deploys? I own a Rover Metro and drive it most days. I am very careful to avoid any potential danger as the panels are like thick tinfoil in most places. However the lightness of the materials means that for a 1.1 it's quite nippy.

I was always surprised people there that easily fooled that they kept selling them right up until 1997. Who in their right mind went and picked this over any of the other cars you could get at the time, pretty much every contemporary guide at the time said ‘don’t buy this, it’s shit!’

thats british leyland, whats here is basically a facelifted car from 1980, throughout all the probllems with it it also produced their cars way after they should have been updated, the original mini, first sold in 1959, stopped production in 2000, the original land rover, first made in 1970 made it to 1994, the 1st gen jaguar xj6 was made from 1968-1986 and this, the rover 100 (also called the austin metro) only got a facelift

Ashley Sutherland The Rover 200/25 (R3) wasn’t a Metro Replacement it was much bigger than the Metro, I can tell you that personally because I proudly own a 2002 Rover 25 and it’s much bigger and has more legroom than a 2006 Vauxhall Astra. I’m 6ft 5 and 18 and will always be a Rover Enthusiast as well as an Aston Martin and Jaguar Enthusiast. The Metro/100 wasn’t any worse than the horrible Fiesta, Corsa and Polo of the time, but the 1995 200 wasn’t its replacement the CityRover did that job in 2003.

@@Rover75ConnoisseurSE check out AROnline.co.uk there's a R3 development story that mentions that it was originally designed to replace the Metro/100 series but was moved upmarket as a downsized premium Escort/Astra competitor. The increased size was dictated by using the old R8 Rover 200 platform that was simply shortened and used a modified Austin maestro rear axle. As typical with BL it was going to be a segment straddling model that wouldn't directly compete with Fiesta/Corsa but by 2005 when the 25 went out of production it was perfectly sized for the supermini sector

@@sutherlandA1 But it’s much bigger than a Metro, it’s an Astra Sized Car, the Metro/100 was really replaced by the CityRover as Rover themselves were going to do a Metro/100 Replacement an actual brand new R6 but didn’t have enough money or time. While the 45 is a Vectra sized car as the 45 Saloon is 2 inches longer than a 3-Series (E46), then the 75 is an Omega Sized Car being the same length as an 5-Series (E39 & E60).

IIRC in the early 90’s Rover’s management didn’t think that the Metro fitted in with the move upmarket that they were planning and wanted to kill it off. But pressure from the dealer network, will liked having a cheap car to sell alongside the 600, 800’s and Land Rovers meant that it was renamed the 100. In hindsight a disastrous decision!

It was the original NCAP test that caused its demise, the original plan was to sell the 100 until the new Mini was launched. Ironic that the assumably more dangerous classic Mini outlived its replacement! Other than that the Rover 100 was a nice city car, I passed my test in one.

@@howard81 A car that was created in 1980 to replace a car created in 1959, was taken out of production 18 years later, 12 years after its original manufacturer had ceased to exist, due to safety tests only for the car from 1959 it was suppose to replace, to continue to be made for another 2 years. God you had to love the British car industry.

TBH The Rover 100 was just a heavily revised Austin Metro whose design dates back to 1980 I would dare bet ANY small car that was on sale in 1980 such as a MK 1 Ford Fiesta etc would fair just as bad in this same 64 km/h crash test. It is a good thing that cars are now much safer than ever before.

All the cars are going in the same direction on duel carriageways or motorways, so you hit something it will or is going away from you, so the collision is reduced. B roads with oncoming traffic, now thats a different story.
