As someone that covered a lot of miles in my 3 door Mini Metro seeing this video is utterly horrific! The magnitude of the deformation and intrusion into the cabin utterly beggars belief! A driver in this type of collision may reasonably be determined to have died or to have sustained catastrophic injuries, particularly to their lower limbs! Funnily enough, I never thought too much about crashing in my Mini 850 City or my Mini Metro, which is probably just as well...

My parents had this car when I was kid. We made quite some kilometers with it with me sitting in the passenger seat. The car felt quite sturdy, but appearances can be deceiving. I'm glad we never had a crash. My mom later had a Rover 200 and had a pile-up collision with that. It hardly had a scratch. While the Ford Ka she impacted was a write-off. I guess the Rover 200 was much safer than the 100.

Exactly the same issue with the original Mini that also had a basic design dating from the late 50's with hardly a thing done to it. To add salt to the wound so many new cars came out during the production of Mini's and Metro's whilst BL was too busy getting screwed over by the government by refusing to invest money in new designs and treating the workers like shite. It wouldn't end there since Rover got sold off privately so it's owners could bleed them dry of profits and again leaving no money for investment on new designs. It's sad how it ended.

To be fair take a look at anything else which is contemporary (even in '97) in the same segment & the test results look remarkably similar. Nova, Fiesta, Cinq & even the Saxo/106 all look very similar. It wasn't until the mid 2000s that small cars actually got to a reasonable level of performance (remember the ratings are all relative & against a moving segment baseline). The 100 got a bit of a poor rap - I'm not saying that it is anyway good, just comparable!

@@roddenshaw The Seicento was a heavily restyled Cinquecento, a car from 1991, and the Saxo was based on the 80s AX. Many late 90s small cars were recycled from late 80s /early 90s models. A more modern late 90s design, like the first Smart, sliced through these tin cans without deforming, there was in fact some crash test proving it.

Notice how the steering column has already been thrust forward and up by the time the mushroom-like airbag deploys? I own a Rover Metro and drive it most days. I am very careful to avoid any potential danger as the panels are like thick tinfoil in most places. However the lightness of the materials means that for a 1.1 it's quite nippy.

Ashley Sutherland The Rover 200/25 (R3) wasn’t a Metro Replacement it was much bigger than the Metro, I can tell you that personally because I proudly own a 2002 Rover 25 and it’s much bigger and has more legroom than a 2006 Vauxhall Astra. I’m 6ft 5 and 18 and will always be a Rover Enthusiast as well as an Aston Martin and Jaguar Enthusiast. The Metro/100 wasn’t any worse than the horrible Fiesta, Corsa and Polo of the time, but the 1995 200 wasn’t its replacement the CityRover did that job in 2003.

@@Rover75ConnoisseurSE check out AROnline.co.uk there's a R3 development story that mentions that it was originally designed to replace the Metro/100 series but was moved upmarket as a downsized premium Escort/Astra competitor. The increased size was dictated by using the old R8 Rover 200 platform that was simply shortened and used a modified Austin maestro rear axle. As typical with BL it was going to be a segment straddling model that wouldn't directly compete with Fiesta/Corsa but by 2005 when the 25 went out of production it was perfectly sized for the supermini sector

@@sutherlandA1 But it’s much bigger than a Metro, it’s an Astra Sized Car, the Metro/100 was really replaced by the CityRover as Rover themselves were going to do a Metro/100 Replacement an actual brand new R6 but didn’t have enough money or time. While the 45 is a Vectra sized car as the 45 Saloon is 2 inches longer than a 3-Series (E46), then the 75 is an Omega Sized Car being the same length as an 5-Series (E39 & E60).

The little rover 100 don’t mind the airbag it’s only to sense some false security in the car. Massive deformation and intrusion of the floorboard it would be a fatal or serious accident in real life I’m almost sure of it
