Thank you for your knowledge. Because of your video, I was able to install a serpentine belt, in our 2000 sienna. I am broke, you just saved me over $50!! Thank you

A good video. In my case, I broke the alternator lock bolt when changing the alternator (serpentine) belt on my 2003 Sienna van. The remaining stud is seized in the alternator and extends into the curved slot of the adjuster bracket. Tried to remove the alternator but could not easily remove it due to the remaining stud being in the slot. Thought the van was dead in the water and heading for an expensive repair. Someone advised in Toyota Nation that the tensioner and lock bolts are not needed to hold the alternator in place and that a properly tightened pivot bolt will do the job alone (like on old vehicles). As advised, we took a steel pipe (as I did not have a long pry bar) and lifted the alternator to put the correct amount of tension on the new serpentine belt. Tightened the pivot bolt to 41 ft-lbs. My son says I went further than that as he observed I had tightened a bit more past the click sound of the torque wrench. Since the top of the lock bolt had fallen off, I removed tension bolt and metal block. The remaining stud had two threads extending past the adjuster bracket and for good measure installed a flat nut and was careful not to over tighten that. The belt is tight, hard to turn beyond 45 degrees. Took it out for a highway drive to a town half an hour away and so far the serpentine belt is holding well. If I can find someone who can drill out the lock nut stud without removing the alternator, I will simply install a bolt with lock nut/washer to further secure the alternator and rely on using a ply pry bar to lift the alternator for belt tension. If I ever have to replace the alternator, will use the pry bar method to tension the belt and install a bolt and lock washer instead of the lock bolt and tension bolt combination. Posted this on Toyota Nation.

Letting us know the size of the bolts, definitely saved me alot of time fumbling through the Tools.

I discovered why you did not video record loosening the "tension bolt". You should inform the audience that in needs to be loosened a million turns before the belt can slip onto the pulleys. Aside from this, your video was a big help. Thank you!!!

Thank you to show how the three bolts to get the one of the belt tight. My car has belt noise every time when car started (disappear after 1 min.). Particularly when AC is on. It was not until after replaced timing belt by a car shop. Hope the noise comes from loose belt and tight belt will fix it.

What does "the tension is good" mean? Belt tension is a balance between slipping and premature bearing failure. How do you measure tension? How do you know it is good?

You should start off your video with the list of tools we will need. Then the Torque specs for those three bolts.. Afterwards the postion of the the belt sitting on the pulleys and finally how to properly tension the belt.. For example a typical normal tension required for a new belt, so that it wont be too loose to slip off, or too tight to break under engine load, day to day driving.. That way when your making a video you've covered everything, without leaving pieces for the viewers trying to fill in the blanks _________. 👍

To anyone reading, I have removed the bad alternator from a 2003 Toyota Sienna, and the new replacement is where it should be, but … I cannot for my life start the horizontal lock bolt through the adjusting slot and into the threaded hole at the bottom of the part. The just is not enough room for my hand to turn the bolt head to get it started. If I use a 12mm socket, on the ratchet, it doesn’t fit the space allowed. If I use my hand, then I’m blind, cannot see the hole to start tightening the bolt. Help?

Is there more than one belt? When removing the front passenger wheel it looks like there is two belts in there. Any insight would be helpful before I do the job

If the alternator doesn't move after all the bolts are loosened should I just hit it to free it up?
@fixingcars37589 жыл бұрын
You cant hit the alternator with a rubber mallet a little bit if it is stuck, but that is if you are putting a new alternator in because it is likely that you could damage it.

You can do this for preventative maintenance, or if the power steering belt is squeaking. I am sorry that I do not have a video for changing the power steering belt. If you have any questions just ask me.

What do you mean skipping from loosening bolts to "once you get your belt in correctly" ? What the hell do you think I came here to learn how to do?!?! You skipped over the very reason for posting this video.
