The Doge transmission in 1998 is known for the governor pressure switch and solenoid failures causing alot of owners to be duped into a new transmission. Heres the how-to save alot of money for the do-it-yourselfer.

Thanks for posting this video! I replaced the governor pressure solenoid and sensor in my 1999 Ram 1500 and it solved my problem. It cost me ~$150 for the solenoid, sensor, gasket, filter and fluid. A LOT cheaper than a rebuilt transmission!

I have a1998 Dodge Durango with the same exact build and color as your truck....same front end... same body other than your bed... because mine is an SUV. I am having the save problems with mine...and I knew that I was in the right direction with the solinoids. It's the save transmission and same problem...it was nice how you clearly and elaborately got to the point in under 5 mins! Excellent video! Thanks!

This was a good video to show these solenoids. I realize it's old, but there is a mod you can do to allow for better flow to the first solenoid you removed. You open up the channel around the screens with a 3/4" drill bit. As it's designed, the fluid can only get to a small section and if one of those screens gets partially clogged, it will diminish fluid flow. I read about it on the dodgetalk forums.

Check the cable that runs from the throttle body to the trans. to ensure its not sticking. It's the detent cable, responsible for downshift, the tighter the cable the quicker the downshift on acceleration.

first of all thanks for the upload. I own a 99 dodge ram 4x4 5.9 360, the fluid is ruby red and doesn't smell burnt when I check it. I notice that I'm having a similar problem by what you stated in the beginning, only it high revs in 3rd gear close to 3000rpm and have to let off gas, then it will shift. Some days, no problems. I'm going to attempt this this weekend with those same parts. Fingers crossed. update soon.

Thanks for the video. I used it to fix my 98. However, the band "lash" you show of about 1/2 inch looks about right. The other end of the lever is where the approximate 1/8" band adjustment is - where the screw and lock nut are.

OMG. Where do you live? I need to buy you dinner. This video saved our butts. My wife & I just picked up her 98 1500 from an expensive shop visit for new brakes, line etc. because the front brake kept locking up. Then the damn thing wouldn't shift higher than 2 or 3. Trans Temp light came on etc. Frustrated, I searched and found your video. $123 bucks later it is running better then when she bought it. We can now pick up our emergency horse trailer. Thank you soo much!!!

I just did this to my 1998 dodge ram 1500 v6 with the 42RE transmission. I was having the same problem. Only thing I still have is that I have to let the truck warm up, if not, it still has problems shifting out of second, If I let it warm up for 5 minutes, it shifts great. I just bought the truck cheap, the previous owner did not took good care of it, so I can expect some flaws. But thanks for posting the video,

Chris, everything I've read about that sounds like your bands need to be adjusted, you can find the specs in a Haynes manual, people have been saying they shift smooth as silk after that. Don't forget the filter when you got the pan off, remember, no trans additives

You can adjust forward and reverse bands..reverse is adjusted internally..your front or rear piston servo may have a bad seal which would need a rebuild..if servos are bad you also need to see if accumulator spring in valve body is broken, this turns high pressure fluid into low pressure for smooth shifting and if that spring breaks it will only be high pressure which is too much pressure for your forward or reverse servos.

I didn't know if this would fix it, but I took a shot, for about 300 bucks, parts, fluid, filter kit, I actually bought a tranny gasket from the dealer(26.99), way better than the rubber gasket because you don't need to put any RTV gasket maker on it, just make sure the surfaces are very clean. I'm wondering if this was the problem before, I just didn't know , Thanks for the video

Hi, I have a 2000 model Ram 1500 with automatic over drive transmission. My truck just started having problems yesterday. My transmission will shift into every gear except for overdrive. so once I get over 45 mph the rpm are right at 3k... its down shift back into 2 and 1 as I slow down, up shifts again as I speed up until its time to shift into over drive. I also engage the over drive switch on the shift and no change. do I need to replace the governor pressure switch and solenoid or do I need to change out the over drive locking solenoid.... thanks

Hi. I have a '99 Dodge Durango, 5.9,V8, 2WD, 3 wks ago it wouldn't idle when I started it, it would just die, so I was told to replace the IAC, which I did and it idled fine for about a week. Now as soon as I start it, it dies. Plus, it doesn't shift from 1st to 2nd now, trans fluid is good. Are these separate issues or caused by same problem? I'm stumped have no idea what to do. Can't afford to take it in right now. I appreciate any input that might help. Thanks.

I found out from my dad's 1996 dodge ram 1500 has the magnum engine that it wouldn't shift and sometimes wouldn't stay running we found out it wasn't that. It was from the Catalytic Converter being plugged solid. We opened it up and carbon came pouring out. Now its an empty chamber, gives it a much throatier sound and the idle speed is 20mph! Only 11mpg on a good day, any fixes? I've heard plugs, airfilter, oil change, tranny fluid change, and dual exhaust all increase mileage. Any suggestions?

Actually I did! I googled and found the "46re-manual.pdf". Of the two bands, only the 'Rear Band' is adjustable. You can see the adjustment screw for it. Loosen the lock nut, then torque the screw down to 72ft-lbs, THEN back the screw off 2 turns. Now tighten up the lock nut to 25 ft-lbs. BTW, the Solenoid, transducer, gasket and oil ran me about $320 from dealership. Could have saved about $50 if I shopped around, but the no wait, one stop shopping sucked me in...

I have a 1999 Durango 5.2 with the 44re transmission, I've had the pan off and saw these solenoids. I did a filter and fluid change, upon first test drive it was fine, however after work, it shifts first and second reliably no slippage, but wouldn't go into third or overdrive, before this, it would go first second then third if I'd run up the rpms get up to around 45 then go from D to N to D real quick while lifting off the accelerator then it would grab third. Sounds like these solenoids are exactly my problem. however with that being said, I have a friend who is an expert transmission guy who I learned has a source to buy transmission parts whole sale (used to have mechanic shop in town) I learned I can get all the transmission parts for a whole rebuild and upgrade to 46re guts for the same price as these solenoids by themselves. I think I'm going to have it gutted and redone...

Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever. -) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.) torque. -) Back off adjusting screw 2 turns. -) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque. -) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft. lbs.) torque.

Yeah, just a lil slack there, just lock the retaining nut with a sensible torque, it wont back out on you. The pan gasket depends on the two types, the cork type takes less, if you over torque it the gasket will just smash out, the solid rubber ones can take a little more, either one will not leak or back out on you so just use your hand and observe the gasket on the side to ensure it isnt smashing out if it is cork, somewhere arround 10-15 pnds should be good.

Good Video.. Straight Forward... I noticed that you didn't point out Torque Spec's of anything you did. Taking something apart is the easy part. Putting it back together, and torquing the Governor Sensor plate and then the Transmission pan bolts.. is sort of important information... I've looked around and get different Torques: some say 10 Foot Pounds, others say 13 to 15 foot pounds. Makes a difference. Cause you can damage the transmission housing or break off the bolt head...

There is a cable that runs from the transmission to the throttle body called the detent cable. It is adjustable, by depressing the locking tab at the throttle body. This cable controls the pressure lever on the trans. which is responsible for the timming of the downshift/upshift according to throttle pressure. You may want to try to give it a little more slack, just a little and see if that helps.

Well if your stuck in a lower gear the rpm's are higher than normal. If thats the case, that will cause one to run hotter than normal. So when its shifting, your cool, when it sticks you get hot.

Can you feel the knocking through the floor also or only through the steering wheel? Another common issue with 2nd gen rams is the steering shafts that connect the column to the gear box. The grease inside the boots on these shafts becomes too viscous when the engine heats up and over time, this causes the cv style joint in the shaft to pull in and out, resulting in a knocking felt through the steering wheel whenever the truck hits a sharp bump or goes over rough terrain.

Jack the front end up or one side at a time, grab the wheel on the sides and try to move it as if you were steering left to right, look for anything loose. Also grab the wheel from top to bottom and check for anything loose as well. The ball joints are known for going out on them, you may need to pry up and out on them with a prybar or very large screwdriver. Ball joints are what connnects the wheel to the suspension at the top and bottom.

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.2 V8 4X2 and it doesn't go back into first gear when I come to a complete stop, (This only happens after warming up and driving for a little) I changed the governor pressure sensor, transducer, transmission filter and fluid and the problem still happens. I have to shift the gear manually into 1st for me to give the truck power to move because it's like driving a manual transmission but starting in 2nd, RPM's go up and truck moves but very slowly. If I leave it in D and floor it, it jumps into first and tires spin a little before I get traction. Could it be the entire transmission going?

I took it in and had it flushed. they said there was some blockage. it doesn't shut itself off now but the engine light is still on. this could be a different problem but this vid made this job seem fairly simple so I may go ahead and do this because it dose feel a little sluggish from a dead stop. oh, also I found these parts on amazon and I could get both for the same price as just one from the shop that was working on it. ..I'd like to hear back if you get yours fixed.

Oh man, I messed up. I didn't tighten the pan bolts tight enough. My wife drove it and all the fluid came out. she got it off the highway but it was smoking. I tightened the bolts with a torque wrench and replaced the fluid. It has a tough time moving from a full stop. I can shift to 1st then Drive after it is moving. Did I reall mess it up?

I have a 97 ram 1500 and my problem is it stays in high gear going up hills and does not want to stay in on straight highway, seams like it does it when it gets warm, does this sound like the same problem, yours stays in 2 and spins out, im just not sure if they would be the same issue, thanks for the video

Will I have to remove the Valve body to replace TCC and OD solenoids in a 1994 dodge ram 1500? I have a chatter at 40mph which stops when I hit the brake peddle. No Engine light codes. Some concern about Torque Converter, Folks telling me that this problem could be caused by either or. Before I spend the money which is the most likely. THx Dave

what if the "won't shift from 1st to 2nd" only happens while in 4 wheel drive low range but shifts normally in 4 wheel drive high and 2 wheel drive high ?? Have a 98 V-10 Quad cab with 4 tires and short bed with this problem

cont>> Furthermore, I have never opened a tranny and only changed a pressure plate and throwout bearing on an old 72' Roadrunner I had 25 years ago. other than that only work I have done myself on my truck is change the brakes and starter, batteries and belts, filters and tires. Do you think I have enough "know-how" to play with the tranny as you are doing with this fix? Lastly, how much do those two original Mopar parts (the governor pressure switch and solenoid) cost? Thanks for any feedback.

Mmmm, roadrunner, love those cars. The total cost of solenoids should be arround 100.00, and yes I think you could do it just fine. As for will it be worth the money there is only one way to know unfortunately. That is to do it and see if it last, I have had mixed results but for those it works for , they are very appreciative of the savings . As for the detent cable, nope it wont help with this issue.
