1998 Honda Accord V6 review - Worth $1 million and that's no exaggeration.
joetunney.com
Athletes often reference a moment in their lives where they discover the ability to be "In the zone." Trial attorney's, entertainers, entrepreneurs, even humble car salespeople often make a similar discovery. The moment I laid eyes on this car was not that moment, but what happened next would let me become the salesperson and in many ways the person I am today. To say this 200 horsepower 1998 Honda Accord EXL V6 was worth only $1 million would not be an exaggeration, in fact, it would be the understatement of the day.
Hi, this is Joe Tunney at Honda of Seattle and Toyota of Seattle, bringing to you a comprehensive catalogue of hundreds of great vehicles from throughout the automobile industry. Although we specialize in Acura, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, sports cars, SUV's and of course our beloved Honda product line, we also like to carry and review exotic cars from time to time like Ferrari, Dodge Viper, turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars like Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX, as well as affordable vehicles that fit into every budget. For 2014 we are going to make a point of reviewing everything we carry, demonstrating for you the interior and exterior features and condition, the wheels and tires, trunk space, as well as an overview of power, technology, economy and driving characteristics to give you factual information as well as information unique to this particular vehicle so that you can enjoy a more intelligent shopping experience without ever having to step onto the lot.
A little about me. I have been the manager at Infiniti of Kirkland since 2004 and prior to that I ran a high end car boutique in neighboring Bellevue, Washington. For my career I have sold over 10,000 cars so I hope to bring you far more insight than you might ever know to even ask. I show you in some videos how to see if a car has been in an accident, how to make a great buy on a car with a bad Carfax, or why I wouldn't personally buy a car even if it has favorable reviews. Every once in a while I'll even have a little fun to keep the videos fresh but I want to make certain you know that you can always email me at joet@hondaofseattle.com.com if you ever have any questions or feel I have made a mistake or used poor judgment or poor taste.
I am truly thankful for the hundreds of thousands of views and more importantly, perhaps much more importantly, I am honored to have been viewed in over 200 countries around the world. We all are ambassadors for the things we believe in regardless of where we were born and from my little corner of the world here outside of Seattle, Washington I want to express my sincere gratitude for you having invited me into your home, your place of work, or for simply taking a minute of your valuable time to listen to what I have to say. Maybe we will never meet face to face, but I am forever in your debt for giving me the opportunity to share with you the things I have learned. Honda Accord V6 review

Great video and insight. I have the 1998 Honda Accord EX V6 coupe. I purchased it recently and surprisingly, it only had 61,000 miles on it. It looks great still and drives like new! That’s unheard of for a car that’s been around 20+ years. You have a great attitude that has definitely contributed to your success. Best of luck to you!

I know it's been a year past since u left this comment but I'd tell u I thought I was the record holder here. I have a 2000 honda accord v6 I got 241,000 mls on it ur just 2000 mls ahead of me. U should be at 300,000 miles by now if ur still using it. If yes is it still running good so that I know once I reach that milestone I should start saving money to buy a new car.

@@everycarSeattle As a family of 5 I own 5 6th generation accord I drive a 98 my wife 99 my son a 2000 my younger son 2001 and my daughter 2002.We all love it .Easy maintenance. 2001 just hit 400k miles and the 2000 hit 300k miles. All of them have the same engine and transmission. This V-tec engines is so far the best engine by Honda. The only problem are the front seals especially the balancer seal will pop out after 100,000 miles due to that missing bracket that now Honda sells for $4.50 when you replace the seal. There should be a recall on that .Honda got away with that.So on 4 cylinders maybe not on a 6 cylinders.

I am looking at buying a used car and found a ‘98 Accord EX auto V6 with 80k miles on it for $3,200. Assuming the car was well taken care of do you think this would be a good deal? Would you still recommend a 20 year old Honda today and how many miles do you think I could push it with regular maintenance? Any advice is appreciated!

Bought my '98 Accord EX V6 when it first came out: Black Paint/gray inside with all the goodies, from Lennertz Olds/Honda in Merrilville, IN, and then immediately drove the new car to Charleston, SC, where I still live. Still have it, son drove it to Clemson for 4 years. Then grabbed it away from him when he bought his own ,08 Accord V6. Now, at 23 years old, mileage is about 287,000. Today, putting a 4th set of CV boots on the original CV shafts, did replace rear shock/struts a few years ago, had entire car repainted due to failing clear coat, Had a new rebuilt trans at 240K miles, and recently replaced most of braking system with new parts. Did finally have to replace one front wheel bearing when it got noisy. Did almost all work myself. Since wife had oil replaced oil every 3000 miles for years, inside of valve train looked brand new at 250K when I replaced leaking valve cover gaskets. Heads have never been off engine, and has had two timing belt replacements (0ne by dealer, and other by with with help from Eric the Car Guy video I purchased). Get this: still has all 4 original window regulators, and radio is still working on original speakers. Not one crack on the dash. Most reliable car I have ever owned. Wish I could say the same for '97 BMW 528i I had: a constant repair nightmare for years, until I sold it when front suspension died for 2nd time. Your video makes me think I should maybe sell this car to a restorer as a sleeper restoration car. Paid $25K for a new car that has lasted 23 years, and I still drive it to Boeing every day.

Very nice story, and it’s definitely nice to hear of another 98 Accord owner in Charleston! I live in Summerville and have a 1998 Accord EX V6 as well. 192,000 miles and it’s still in pristine condition. Mine is a Dark Emerald Pearl (dark green) sedan. It’s always nice to see other well-kept ones in the area.

I still have this same year/model accord (bought new), and now have it with 261,000 miles on the odometer. Very reliable car, head gaskets still original, just put third timing belt on it myself last week. engine is stone reliable, never touched the V-tech system (my '97 BMW 528i has had at least 10 times the reliability issues on the engine/suspension. I still have the original front C/V joints, though they are starting to complain on turns. Mine was black, and of course clear coat peeled at about 200K, so got it repainted. 1 rear wheel bearing went out a few years ago, and put new one on in about 30 minutes myself. Changed rear struts at 225K miles (completely gone south by then), and other than that, it is still a daily driver. I anticipate getting maybe another 40-50K out of it before engine might need serious work. Very powerful engine for this light body. Used to love to come up at stop lights when young kids had their 5.0 mustangs, and I would put the car in neutral, and rev the V6 and give them the sign to drag race just for laughs. No one in the world has the reliability record that Honda (and maybe Toyota) have when it comes to mid-size sedans. Your video above is spot-on - I think we paid right at about $25K for this one.

+Judy Brandt Great job doing the timing belt yourself! I can't remember even hearing about someone doing their own timing belt for at least 10 years. I remember when this car came out I asked openly "if you had to pick one car to last forever, what would it be?" A lot of people picked the Camry which was also a great car, but most people thought the new Accord was just about perfect. 18 years later, I think you've proven that it really is a great car that stands the test of time.

I actually JUST got this car (looks exactly like this one; silver 98 Accord) from my dad's coworker a couple weeks ago! It's so good; runs well; stereo sounds amazing. I have it at 91k, as well. I also called Honda to let them know what recall has been given on the year and model and they mentioned an interlock part, regarding either the ignition or the shift stick...got it replaced today for free. Some people who had problems with it were saying that once they would place the car in park (automatic) it would happen to roll. Pretty scary but glad I got it taken care of! (Dallas, Texas)

I must say though, the stock speakers do not sound that great, and not remotely close to what a Bose system sounds like, as my friend has a 2003 Acura 3.2 TL Type-S fully loaded (that car had a free transmission replacement due to it being under warranty CPO). Overall my Accord is great and I plan to run it to the ground (which will be a very long time from now considering it's decent condition).

Just replaced the radiator about 4 months ago from the original that lasted all of 17 years(Very impressive) BTW why do you call this car a sub compact? It's not even close to a sub compact. Some say that it's a mid size and it's certainly big enough to be one. But at the very least it's been classified as a compact. So why do you keep calling it a sub compact? It's anything but. A lot of parts are Interchangeable on the engine with the same year Honda Odyssey, My Alternator went out and I went to the local salvage yard and took one from a 99 Odyssey and it bolted right up. Make sure to check for oil leaks once it hits 200,000 miles, especially around the V-Tech Valve. I like the older honda/Toyota /Nissan owned a lot of them worked at bodyshop we rebuilt salvaged cars and sold them and Honda and Toyota v6 trans not very good but back in them years maxima was king of v6 and their auto trans bulletproof like the 3.0 v6 95-99 only 2000-2003 3.5 oil burners but a 03-07 accord 6mt hell yeah bulletproof except 3rd gear synchro in gear box can go bad

The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney Yeah they were awesome, My dad had to sadly sell it because his job in Seattle ended. (He worked at Microsoft for some 5-6 years.) and plus he wanted us to move back into his hometown which had terrible roads oh god. But the car my dad owned before this legendary accord was another Legendary Volkswagen Jetta. It was some old model I’m not sure what year but it was wonderful.

I have a 2000 Sedan V6. Garbage transmission of course 4 times destroyed and had enough and did a 2003 Acura TL 3.2 Type-S 6 speed manual swap and she's very fast now. The 3.0 was decent but not that fast so that's why it got replaced as well :D

After 21 years if it has made it this far (apparently over half are still on the road which is in the top small number of cars sold in '98) a: you should feel fantastic for buying an amazing car and b: you probably don't need to worry about the transmission anymore.

No joke I would buy a 1999 Honda Accord EX for MSRP if someone had a brand spanking new one. I own a 1999 EX and even at 246k miles its still doing just fine. It was my first car, 4 years ago and I plan to rebuild the engine and begin a full restoration and a silver respray (mines white) after I get a 2nd car. It won't be profitable by any means but as my first car I'd love to hit a big reset button on it. I even thought about putting a 99 civic type r engine in it.

I got it for 2600 they wanted 3000 but showed then the money and they took it lol.. the original gaskets for the valve cover oil pan gaskets I changed and you can tell that never been changed cause it just melted was really hard to scrape off shocking to me I'm the first person to replace the oil pan gaskets and the engine valve cover after 21 years .. I'm the second owner to this car

What an awesome find...it's hard to believe it wasn't leaking all over the place (or shot altogether) with those original gaskets and valve cover, but that's what makes old Hondas old Hondas...there is nothing quite like them...except old Toyota Tacomas.

Phil, you have two of the nicest cars for the money that money can buy. You could almost certainly keep them for 10 years and more, then sell them for more than you bought them for. I'm always amazed that people will buy a common $40,000 car for invoice and feel smart because they bought it cheap and it only depreciated $32000 in 10 years while your two cars will last just as long and make money over time.
@philsmith4668

We got lucky, my wife bought the Ex 5 years ago @ 33k miles in mint condition after the elderly owner died. I bought the Lx after her mom gave up driving last year. Really no point in newer cars when these perform just as well and lots of life left in them. All we need do is maintain them and they may be classics some day.
