Jack's last hurrah, and my second favorite Masters aside from '86. Just to see his name on the leaderboard with Duval and Couples and Mickelson (at 2:58) was nothing short of astonishing. He transcended generations. Still the GOAT.......

Those Nicklaus roars at the beginning of the telecast are about as intense as anything I've ever heard, literally like straight outta '86! I still remember tuning into this telecast like it was yesterday. Pity a couple more putts couldn't fall in for Jack!!

This tournament had it all....from the Legends hitting the honorary tee shots to Gary Player making the cut, 58 year old Jack Nicklaus scaring the young guys (even with a bad hip) , Paul Azinger playing great after cancer, David Toms shooting lights out , Mark O'Meara getting his first pro major....all the great names Duval, Couples, Mickelson and others. Definitely one of the most enjoyable Masters for the fans.

Jack Nicklaus did actually show up on some leaderboards during the '90s, it was only after significant hip surgery in the summer of '98 that he finally became incapable of contending. By that time of course it didn't really matter, he'd long since done it all.

Ken Venturi was wonderful,I especially like his little anecdotes that are dropped in like Hogan watching the flag on 11th from 12th tee to judge the wind,brilliant insights.

Mark and I went to high school together. He was a year behind me. I am the son of a golf professional but never played on the golf team; I was not athletically inclined. Wouldn't have made any difference anyway, our varsity golf team was so talented, Mark leading the way. He was always kind to everyone and had such a great disposition. I think my dad spoke to him more than I ever did but we said our cordial "hi's" in the corridors and breaks. Ironically, that show of emotion at 18 is the most I ever saw from him (understandable). Always leveled headed.

Imagine if Jack made a run and shot 64 for the win. That would have been the most legendary win of all time.

I've been a Jack Nicklaus fan/borderline groupie my entire life. In fact my wife and I and took out kids on a pilgrimage to Columbus, Ohio to visit the Jack Nicklaus museum on The Ohio State University campus. It was truly a great experience and what made the museum so special was the fact it was more about Jack's family than simply him. They had photos where he would hop on a plane after completing the second round of a tournament so he could be at his kids football games that night. He would then get back on the plane in the middle of the night and return to the tournament site for 3rd round and of course often would win. People often talk about his great victory in the 86 Masters at the age of 46 but I also point to the 98 Masters which may have been an even greater moment when at the age of 58 he shoots a 4 under 68 and finishes in a tie for 6th just 4 shots back of the leader.

O'Meara may have won but I'll always remember this tournament as Jack's last hurrah

This is without question one of the best Masters of all time. When the broadcast came on the air, and Jim Nantz said what he said, I firmly believed that Jack might just pull it off. Sadly, after he came within 2 shots of the lead with his birdie on 7, he was never able to get any closer. What's ironic is that after his round on Saturday, Jack said that he would have to shoot 64 to have a shot at it. If he had shot 64, he would've been in a playoff with O'Meara.

Jack's last great finish in a major. If he had won, it would've made this tournament even better.

I wish Freddie would've won the masters that year he was so close! I remember his 2nd shot at the 13th hole oh baby! Freddie has been favorite golfer of all time!

If there is ever a greater example of how EVERY moment and every shot in golf at this level matters it's in this tournament. On Saturday Freddy stuffs it at 13 from 200 yards and makes eagle - a day later one bad swing from 160 straight up costs him the tournament. Wow.

Am i crazy or did Jim Nantz do this? If Jim Nantz ran for president i would vote-- he is smart, positive, has a sense of humor, knows how to talk to people (an underrated skill), and genuine. Probably the best broadcaster of all time.

Got the only hole-in-one of my life on this day. Went and got in 18 in the morning, stiffed it all day. Nearly holed out on 14 and 15 for eagles. Came to 16 at -5; hit another one perfect and said "well that's got no way" and it 2 hopped and rolled in for the ace. 154, 9 iron! Of course 3 putted 18 for the 66. Came home and watched Tiger's big brother win and said to my friends "you can expect the unexpected today" and no one knew this was coming! Great job Mark. PS. Why was Payne Stewart never invited? Guess they didn't get along too well

I wanted Freddy Couples to win so bad. O'Meara's win seemed to come out of nowhere. He was right there, but I thought it was a Couples/Duval race, then O'Meara birdied the 18th and won it.

There’s something about this tournament that is ageless. When you see the golfer on the 18th green getting ready to win, it doesn’t matter what year it is, it looks the same.

I remember watching this and thinking Jack may just pull this off again. Also, I hear people complain in current years about "lack of broadcast" time in the Masters... man, they should have been around 30-40 years ago when you never saw the front 9 broadcast live...

I have played golf for over 50 years and I have to laugh when fans say Tiger played against tougher and deeper fields. This is not a knock against Tiger. I think the 1998 Masters demonstrated how Jack in his prime would have dominated this field. I believe Jack and Tiger would have had a great rivalry with Jack prevailing over the long term.

This was all Couples and Duval, then suddenly O'Meara has won the masters. It was was like, what just happened?

This was one of the most exciting but ultimately disappointing Masters that I've watched. Nothing against O'Meara, but he's 5th at best of who I would've wanted to win. First would've been Jack. If he could've pulled that off, I don't care whatever else happened in the future, you'd never convince me he wasn't the greatest all time (I still think he is). Second would have been Freddy. How can you not enjoy watching him and root for him? Duval would've been next. One of my favorite players and a beautiful, easy swing second only to Couples. After that, it would've been cool to see Zinger come all the way back from cancer. Like I said, I like O'Meara and this is nothing against him. But there were some many other better stories that could've happened with a shot here or there.

Went from rooting for Tiger who was out of it fast to rooting for Jack during the Sunday Open by Nantz then when Jack finally ran out of gas I was rooting for Couples even though I liked O’Mera Mark won the tournament with a terrific 18th hole putt.
