No problem with the side steps. Serious off roaders remove them anyways.

How difficult is it to come across one of these Hilux Surfs with the Intercooler?

To get a clean one grade 3.5 or 4 with low miles is very rare, but not impossible. Lots of high milage ones or R graded ones. I would stay away but to each their own.
