I think I may have to do the same replacement. I've read elsewhere that it has to be "reprogrammed" or "calibrated". Is that the case? Thanks.

@@drgdrg-vj7dz Yes it would need to be recalibrated Only to take the BAS light off the dashboard. You will be Amazed by the trucks get up and go performance the new YAW sensor gives it . My truck never had that kind of power Before. It will only take about 20-25 minutes to install it and unplug the battery. Two screws and one electrical harness that's all.

Thanks for the info! Does recalibrated mean to just clear the code (Mine isnt actually throwing any codes but I am having BAS ESP issues)? Also, you have to unplug the battery when you replace the sensor?

@@drgdrg-vj7dz I didn't have my Bas ESP light recalibrated but I know it works when it was Malfunctioning the brakes will apply pressure on its Own and make the truck come to a Screeching Halt no matter how fast you were driving and it doesn't do that anymore that's how I know it works and you have to unplug the battery anytime your working on anything Electrical on any vehicle as a Safety Precaution.

I was wondering can u possibly tell me what I need to do to fix both driver and passenger heated seats? All of the lights come on when we press them but neither one of the seats gets warm anymore... Can bus network not detecting bas switch and esp off . Also air conditioner and cluster gauges don’t work and most of the warning lights. Any fixes to it?

There are no lights on my 01 ML320 103k but when I take off it will lock up quickly but release like a stutter..my heart jumps but then it drives fine and that doesn't happen Everytime...The rpm's are higher than usual sometimes in higher gears...I think ive gotten it down to either speed sensors or the AWD!?...Any tips!?

so this sensor causes the bas/esp light to come up? i have a c230 00 k i already switch the brake light switch, and it still comes back up, and i break or put my foot on the break. could this be the fix?

Sometimes it's just a process of elimination with these small cheap parts. If I was a gambling man I'd definitely give this a try. These Mercedes can be very finicky. Hope that helps. Joe

Hi. Could you recommend a decent diagnostic scanner for my Mercedes 2000 ML320? Also could you tell me what this warning light on the dashboard mean--symbol of lamp with waves under it? Could i get it fix it myself without going to the dealer and have them charge me an arm and leg? Thanks!

Meg R. I recommend the CReader Professional Model CRP123. The light you indicated should be the low oil light, you should check your oil dipstick to make sure you are within the safe range and oil is full.

I got a 2000 ml320 with all three error lights in the display on also. It started breaking front left wheel with a scraping noice using the ABS, (the ABS " ! " light in the middle was flashing on) when turning left sometimes before the lights came on. I disconnected the harness to the pump and sprayed with some anti-oxide and X4 oil. Put it back together and the two first lights went out and once turned the wheel fully the BAS light to the left was out too. Everything was fine in 2 days, ABS working perfectly. Now its all back on. Could it be the yaw rate sensor.? or lateral sensor? connection error? thied the connector again but it came back at once this time thanks//Martin

I have a ML55 AMG 2002 , While driving normally or on a bumpy road the EPS, ABS, BAS, hand Brake light come on with beeping sound. the steering feel a little tighter and the beeping sound stay on until I park the car and turn off the car. after turn of the car and restart it's work fine

My MLS brake assist went crazy a couple days ago as my gfriend was exiting a parking lot. I wonder if the yaw sensor detected something that wasn't happening? What scanner do you use, I bought one that Scotty Kilmer recommended, but I haven't taken the time to tinker with it

CORVAIRWILD you’ll probably need a lateral sensor. Goes bad around 130-150k miles on all my MLs. I use a Launch Creader CRP123. Does everything I need it to do on my MLs.

CORVAIRWILD yes they are different I show them in this video. I’m not sure if you can get a new one but I buy used ones for about $30 on eBay. Yes lots of creaders available I have the CRP123.i think there is a newer version out now as I purchased mine about 4 years ago.

Awesome video thanks for the info. Do you need to disconnect the battery before replacing the sensor? Also does the sensor need to be calibrated with a computer after installation?

Jack Symonds you don't have to disconnect the battery and no computer is needed to reprogram. Just start and drive and it should reset automatically. Hope that helps! Thanks Joe

Jack, glad to help, I did not disconnect the battery, although if you want to error on the side of caution, you will not hurt anything by doing that as well. The car may need to be driven to calibrate it but I have not had to do anything with mine in order for the codes to disappear, just plug and play. Hope that helps! Thanks Joe

Unfortunately I can't find that car on my Alldata website, it looks like it is only in Europe. I would have to make an educated guess and say that the sensor is either under the rear seat or behind the dash between the steering column and the brake booster. I have a 2002 E320 with 98,000 miles and for more than half a year now, the BAS ESP light comes on during driving, normally in the morning it is off but during the day while driving, it definitely pops up and whenever it lights up, my air conditional blower, left and right turn signal won't work, sometimes they just start working again but dead again randomly. It takes me awhile to figure out if I jiggle the ignition key when I need to make left or right turn, the blower and turn signal will work temporarily but soon after I stop holding the key, blower and turn signal will be dead again. After I changed the stop switch, all 4 rotors and brake pads and all cabin filters, that BAS ESP light keeps coming up. I have not checked the code yet. You mentioned in your video the lateral acceleration sensor could be bad, but why would it interfere with the turn signals and blower? Thanks in advance for your expertise advice.

Wow sounds like you have a lot going on there, I would start by checking with a scanner that can read ABS codes. As far as the turn signals not working that usually is a switch in the column going bad. I had to replace mine as the high beam switch also stopped working. Not sure about an e320 but on my ML it required taking off the air bag and steering wheel to get to the switch, not a terribly hard job. As for the blower it sounds like you might have a blower motor going bad, that's usually located under the passenger side dash. Those would be the normal fixes, however your issue does seem more complicated if all of those components stop working and start working based on the jiggling of the ignition key. If you have replaced the ignition switch and it still acts up then you will have to look elsewhere. Otherwise I'd be planning to replace the ignition switch as a start, but check the codes first. Thanks for your opinion, it is strange that the blower and turn signal always work if BAS ESP light does not turn on. In the morning drive to work when it is cooler, I don't know if this is temperature related, blower and turn signal always work fine and the BAS ESP light usually is not ON during the 10 miles trip, as soon as BAS-SEP light turns on typically when I go out for lunch from work, blower and turn signal both stop working immediately, then I have to jiggle key to make them on when I need to turn. The blower and turn signal always either both work or not work at all, every time when I drive and the ESP light suddenly turns on, it will immediately make both blower and turn signal stop working. I think they are victims of some switch more likely the lateral acceleration switch than the ignition switch. You are right I need to scan the code first. Thanks a lot for your prompt response.

Allrighty, here goes. I have the same problem on my 2005 W203. ESP not available, visit workshop. Can't be brake light switch cause my brake lights are just fine. Doesn't have a bls by the way, there's one intergrated on the booster and not on the pedal as some claims. So next thing should be an ESP sensor, I'd guess. Where is the sensors situated, how do I fix it, or do I also have a part like the one in this video which I can swap out?

Lario Louw if you can get your hands on a good scanner the scanner will tell you what may be causing the issue. Mine found a bad wheel speed sensor on one axle, I replaced that and walla the light went out.

the lateral sensor is fixed in a metal frame. not sure how to take it out that I can replace it?

It's in a little metal frame so yes you just kind of twisted it and it pops out and then you twisted it and pop it back in

Hi there, I have the same problem with my 01 Ml320. The light is on along with the brakes locking up at random. I replaced the YAW rate with no resolve and just now replaced the lateral acceleration sensor but the light is still on. Is there a manual reset I need to do?

My lateral and yaw sensors went bad. I was doing 70 on the interstate and my left front abs engaged on its own and began pulsing. Nearly killed me. Three mechanics(including dealer) had never seen that happen. I'd rather not have abs than risk that again, so instead of replacing I just pulled the abs relay and disconnected the lights.

Check the plugs in the door, my rear driver passenger and driver side door plugs had corrosion in the electric pin connectors

Lario Louw just your electronic stability control will not work. So if you were in rain or snow it's possible to have an issue with skidding or braking so I'm not saying it's not safe to drive but take extra precautions until it is fixed.

Salah Hably no it shouldn't have anything to do with the engine performance that sounds more like a misfire or maybe a bad coil pack do you have any check engine lights on currently?

dgn107 sorry, it’s not to difficult, you just have to kind of twist it out. It’s been awhile since I did it, but once you see it up close you will be able to figure it out. It’s not very hard.

How did you remove the acceleration sensor and put in a new one? I saw a steel bracket with the sensor inside, but just can't figure out how to get it out of the steel bracket. Thanks.

You just have to twist it out, you might have to use a screwdriver to pry it out, then snap it back in. Hope that helps! Thanks, Joe

Thanks for the guidance I replaced mine on ML430 2001 & the BAS/ESP light gone. I took a 3-4 mile test ride after this with no issues, but after around 30-40 minutes when I restarted after some gap somehow I am getting the more scarier “CHECK ENGINE” light my milage is ~178k before BAS/ESP & sensor replacement this was not an issue. Can someone please help me understand this. Is this usual after Lateral acceleration sensor replacement so I need to get it reset/reprogrammed ? The sensor that I had on my 2001 ML430 “Part# A163 542 06 18” Q02 The one I purchased from ebay seller is “Part# A163 542 06 18” Q04 (from ML350) The part# is matching though. Is there something I can DIY to get rid of the “CHECK ENGINE” light.

Typically Check Engine is for emissions related items. Unrelated to Lateral Sensor. Just have the codes scanned at local auto parts shop to see what the code is and go from there. Hope that helps.

@@joesnowmobiles Thanks for responding; yes got it checked on autozone & it was due to P0300 (random/multiple misfire) & P0307 (cylinder 7 misfire) . Last weekend I could DIY the spark plugs & spark plug wire replacement on Cylinder 7 . The misfire codes are cleared. But now after driving for about 25-30 miles I got BAS/ESP back on. Went to Autozone with the light on but scan didn’t show any codes this time. But car is IM ready now . My next approach will be to replace the Brake light switch though my break lights work fine (read through some forum & figured that even if brake lights work the break light switch may be at fault a known recall for 2001 ML430). Anything that comes to your mind to get the code in this situation? Forgot to mention this time resetting BAS/ESP from steering wheel (all the way right n left) is not working & the light pops up after some delay post start later stays ON

Upon initial scan there were lot of old stored codes (12) 1x C1200: S9/1 (stop lamp switch) Plausibility 1x C1000: N47-5 (ESP. SPS[PML] and BAS control unit) 1x C1140-12: N49 (Steering angle sensor) 1x C1140-08: N49 (Steering angle sensor) 3x C1120: N64 (ESP Yaw rate sensor) 1x C1527: implausible ESP control control time > 10s 4x C1142: B24/2 Lateral acceleration sensor [Total 12 count] -The C1200 was because I removed brake light switch & tested that with multimeter for fault but it was good so placed it back. -To rule out C1140 Steering Angle Sensor, I tested live data & it was showing correct angle data so just re-calibrated & cleared that. -For C1142 Lateral acceleration sensor, I already replaced that part so I knew its an old stored code & cleared that. -Later I went ahead and cleared all remaining to see what codes popup next. -After 2 days I again got “C1120: N64 ESP Yaw rate sensor” again cleared. -After 7 days I got again the same C1120 this time I cleared & it was coming every time I drive for like 5-10 minutes (the only difference I cleared it immediately the moment it came up by stopping car , clearing code & test drove again like 2x times) at last I went on drive with BAS/ESP light ON without clearing code & after 10minutes this time upon scan it threw C1120 Yaw rate & C1000: N47-5 (ESP. SPS[PML] and BAS control unit) {more scarier} After clearing both codes its 2 days no codes yet. So based on this diagnosis on my 2001 ML430 I am suspecting “Yaw Rate Sensor is faulty”; I am planning to replace that now & On close inspection under the central console On the top side of “Yaw Rate Sensor” part# A163 542 2140 this part is discontinued by Mercedes just like Lateral acceleration sensor. can you suggest some way to find compatible new part# for 2001 ML430 ? Also please suggest some stuff for C1000 as a backup plan just in case if reappear. Thanks in advance

Hey Joe, I am having problems with my 2001 ML320. My car will turn on and and run perfect just when i push the pedal to try to accelerate the car dies. If i push the pedal slowly it will go but when i try to push it down more to pick up speed it just dies. Can you please help me.

joesnowmobiles The check engine light never came on until the problem happened. The BAS, ETS, and ABS were the only ones on.

Ok, you'll definitely need to get the codes checked before we can diagnose. Take it to AutoZone, Advance, Carquest, Oriellys one of them should be able to scan it for free. Once you get the codes let me know and we will go from there.

What brand bearing did you use? I bought a genuine Mercedes from Amazon Marketplace, and it's actually a made-in-china Febi Bilstein, and the rubber says Germany, so who knows what it is. But it's going back for $70, then someone sent me a link to a genuine Spicer from Amazon itself, $80. Somebody else that they put in a meyle, and it lasted 3500 miles.

joesnowmobiles yes, the center support bearing. I also posted on a Mercedes forum, and a guy found me a genuine Spicer on Amazon for $80. The one that I just had shipped here said genuine Mercedes, but it wasn't, Amazon moves listings around as they see fit. It was also from the marketplace, this one is directly from Amazon, we'll see what ends up coming here. Something you might think of doing, if you have the expertise, is putting links to the part numbers you mentioned in the video, I'm not sure how people do it, but it's really handy, you can just click on things and go directly to the bearings and brushes you mentioned in the ABS video

joesnowmobiles if you have the time, I also crawled underneath my ML with a stethoscope to listen to what was howling, and I posted a 9-minute video on KZfaq. I rust-proof the heck out of my vehicles, as I bring them from out west, and certain ones I plan to drive in the winter, I don't want them to rust. It's much worse here that even in Chicago where you are

CORVAIRWILD I watched your video, yes you need a carrier bearing assembly. I’m assuming you watched my series on the bearing replacement? It’s not a terribly hard job I did the last one in about 2 hours. Hope that helps

Looks like a whole lot of the codes may be related to the conductor plate, P2602, P2600, P2310 P2068 P20CC I would start with that and also replace the connector plug that connects to the conductor plate area with a new updated part from the dealer, it tends to leak transmission fluid on the connectors and short it out. The other codes P2036, P2001, C1000, C1140, C1141 appear to be related to the ABS pump and module, you can find a fairly cheap abs pump and module on ebay for about $150. I would check first to see if your abs motor runs by jumpering the relay while the ignition is on. You may find that by replacing one of these items it solves a number of the codes. I would focus on the conductor plate and the abs motor and module first. Just my 2cents hope that helps!Joe

Thank you very much. What is the conductor plate? I will try a new pump and module. I think I can install it. Today it is raining and the lights keep coming on. So it seems dampness is a factor. When it's dry and warm during the day, the lights often go off. I'm guessing moisture in the module up front? But not sure what the conductor plate is. Thanks.

I have Bas/esp light on to in my Mercedes ML320 2003! go to dealer and tell me codes C1035,C1037,C1040 CONTROL UNIT,STEERING ANGLE SENSOR,LATERAL SENSOR, they want $4,098 dlls for it! is normal this three sensor fail same time or i need a pint point diagnosis they charge 407 dlls for the diagnosis.... any help?

Cesar Vazquez wow sounds too expensive to me. I would acquire a good scanner you will be able to eliminate the cheapest parts first. Most of the time it's something very simple. You can buy your own scanner for less than what it cost you to diagnose it. What State do you reside in?

Hello mate, I have uk ML320 with BAS ESP light on, my mechanic suggested it could merely be a tracking problem, he reset the light with scanner, light came back,(no codes tho,) he looked underneath, spotted a bit of movement in the steering rack, told me that may well be the problem, am looking around for replacement rack, will let you know ☺

I'm having a similar problem with my Mercedes only during the cold start in the morning. Driving me crazy I had an O2 Sensor replaced, brake switch and crankshaft those lights associated with the Brake is still coming on. Everybody wants to charge me for something else but can't find the problem. The BAS, ESP BRAKE LiGHT COMES on and this beeping after a few tries turning on the engine and warming up, the lights go off but the engine light stays on. When those lights BAS, ESP, BRAKE, all those indicators to the far left on the display panel are on, the the car will not drive as normal. They go out and the car drives like normal but mechanic who say's they specialize in Mercedes can't find the problem. Recently I was told it a CU Display board...next stop dealer I figure they have to know should have gone there first.

Hi Wendy, these things can be tricky to diagnose. Have you had any codes come up on a scanner? I think the best investment I ever made for my Mercedes was the Launch Tech CRP123 Srs,abs, transmission and engine code scanner. You can buy it on eBay for around $160. This way you can check your own codes and reset them yourself when needed. If you have someone scan the codes please let me know what they are and I'll see if I can come up with any ideas. The codes indicated first 02 sensor bank 2 when first diagnosed. I had this last service center put it on a machine and he mentioned he had to clear many fault codes.

Wendy Johnson I have same lights esp etc abs check engine. Also is intermittant just like yours and worse in the morning when cold and damp. I had codes read. Not much help. Many codes. The intermittant cold warm scenario makes me think something is shorting out from bad solder joint or something is getting wet. ETS module? Abs module? The slow driving you experience is limp mode a protective feature. It runs in second gear. Mine does the same. The dealer and an Indy shop haven't figured it out. So I may begin replacing modules sensors etc.
