This bloke is clueless. Its a diesel engine and he's focusing on BHP. Mate its all about the torque! Plus theres a 3.0 and 4.2 option. Both turbo charged too. What a plonker!

+MegaHamez The 3.0 didn't come out until a year later and the 4.2 didn't come to the UK. The reviewer seemed disinterested in 4x4s in general.

I had one of these with the 3.0 turbo diesel. It was an animal and pissed all over my father's Landcruser every time we had to tow a trailer. An excellent work horse and still nothing out there to match it for traction or pulling power and iv drivin them all.

Have had one of these 2.8 TD Patrols since new in 1998. Have traveled a half million kilometres… mostly on Australian outback roads and tracks, usually towing. Have had a few issues with the very hardworking motor, but mainly due to the routine maintenance that my car has never received. Yes the motor is quite anaemic, but it has always had just enough power to get the job done, and has always got us home. Just gave the old girl a 24th birthday in the workshop, and she feels like new. Many years left in her yet. My previous car was a SWB MQ Patrol that lasted over 20 years of similar hard abuse.

got the same car, but I am in Panama, here the more common patrols are 4.2 diesel, the rd28 with turbo diesel is not so seen anymore, maybe because they were not so reliable or people just didn't know how to take care of it...

If you go south to Central America you can find a bunch of diesel engines. It’s due to the face that diesel is cheaper that gasoline in Central America.

Horses for courses. I have a 2006 expedition prepared 3.0Di Patrol. I have taken it to Morocco, Western Sahara and Turkey on a number of occasions over 11 years. You can adapt it for your needs. Most of the gear on mine is Australian. Old Man Emu raised suspension greatly reduces the body roll without compromising comfort while increasing ground clearance. Heavy duty basic engineering - not electronic gizmos is what you want in remote areas. Look at any of the car reliability surveys and sadly you will find that Land Rover and Jeep always near the bottom. Beautiful leather interiors and expensive HiFis don't count for much if you are stuck in the desert 200miles from help. I've used it as UK everyday transport - and don't have to worry about supermarket car park door dings or ruining 21" alloys on British road potholes. It has depreciated less in 11 years than a new SUV in the first 2 years. I don't feel exhausted at the end of 500 miles a day across Europe en route to somewhere interesting. "Chacun a son gout" as the French say.

Bien dit chaqu'un a son goût. I have a y61 bought in Manchester in 2016. And it's my 3rd patrol. I drive it Avery day in Bujumbura. And every 2 to 3 months to Dar-es-salaam 1650 km from Bujumbura. Believe it's the best 4x4 ever with solid axles you can pull a mountain.

I can't get over how clueless this guy is. The TD42T and TB45 engines are awesome and have more than enough poke to get the truck moving. The mere fact he suggests two of the worst vehicles in terms of reliability (Jeep and Discovery) as preferable options shows he's never taken a vehicle properly offroad. Have a look to the right and see what these beasts can do.

Why is because it's the Cherokee is a unibody piece of garbage and the Land Rover is a BMW piece of garbage. The 2.8 TDI is an amazing engine with tons of torque and there's very little that's more prepared for offroad stock than the Patrol.

Proves this clown has no idea. He's calling the mighty GQ rubbish. Obviously has no idea what a real 4x4 is all about. Why on earth would you buy a patrol over a Jeep Cherokee or land rover he said. Must be the joke of the century. This guy is reviewing probably strongest, toughest 4x4 ever made. I guess its because in England its impossible to make use of this vehicles full potential and that a cheroke or landrover wld be a better vehicle for overtaking on the way to tesco or doing the school run. Now if your talking about doing a 5000km trip into the outback or doing a 4x4 extreme challenge or a desert dune race in Dubai with a turbo charged 4.8 then this vehicle is unmatched. The landcruiser may match it as a tourer but nothing comes close in terms of drivetrain strength or the horsepower capabilities of the legendary 4.8.
