Very informative. I am a great fan of Jaipur Atrauli gharana. I totally agree that jaipur gayeki is not 'Rookha sookha". In fact it is emotionally very intelligent and strong singing, shruti jee is par excellence.. salam from Lahore

As a student of music, I am Always looking for any knowledge about the subject I happen to click on your site that showed up on my screen. I am hooked on Baithaks. If I may offer a hypothesis for why the mukhda is so small in Jaipur: I suspect it is in support of the laya baddha nature of the gayaki. As a jaipur singer approaches the home stretch of the avartan the tension builds up in the anticipation of the mukhda. The closer the singer gets to the sam, the greater the anticipation and excitement. A small mukhda allows the fulfillment of the anticipation to be compressed into a small timeslot, so as a listener you go from "we're going to miss..." to "we're home!" in just a matra or so. And that makes it very pleasing . Other gharanas that are not as laya focused don't have that much to gain from a small mukhda, so they don't commonly feature one.

श्रुती सडोलीकर काटकर (जन्म: ९ नोव्हेंबर १९५१) जयपूर-अतरौली घराण्यातील ख्याल शैलीतील एक ख्यातनाम भारतीय शास्त्रीय गायक आहेत . २०११ साठी हिंदुस्थानी गायन संगीतासाठी संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्काराच्या त्या प्राप्तकर्ता आहेत. साडोलीकर यांचा कोल्हापुरातील एका कुटुंबात झाला जो वाद्य परंपरेसाठी ओळखला जात होता. त्यांनी बालपणापासूनच भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीताचे प्रशिक्षण घेतले. प्रारंभिक प्रशिक्षण त्यांचे वडील वामनराव सदोलीकर यांनी दिले होते. वामनरावाना जयपूर-अतरौली घराण्याचे संस्थापक अल्लादिया खान आणि त्याचा मुलगा भूरजी खान यांनी शिकवले. त्यांच्या वडिलांच्या अभ्यासक्रमानंतर , श्रुतिताईंनी बारा वर्षे गिलुभाई जसदानवाला यांच्याकडे संगीत शिकले, ज्यांच्याकडे दुर्मिळ रागातील रचनांसह अनेक राग रचनांचा मोठा संग्रह असल्याचे म्हणून ओळखले जायचे . श्रुतिनी पुढे मुंबईच्या एसएनडीटी महिला विद्यापीठातून मंदिरातील संगीत प्रकारातील हवेली संगीत यावर एक प्रबंध लिहून पदव्युत्तर पदवी संपादन केली .याशिवाय सडोलीकर उत्तर प्रदेशमधील लखनऊ येथील भातखंडे संगीत संस्था विद्यापीठाचे कुलगुरू म्हणून काम करतात. त्यांनी आपल्या वडिलांचे कौतुक केले कारण ते संगीत क्षेत्रातील होणाऱ्या घडामोडींकडे बुद्धिवादाने पाहत होते. दिग्गज कलाकार, वादक, नट यांची नेहमी घरी वर्दळ असायची आणि त्यावर पहाटेच्या ३ वाजेपर्यंत चर्चा चालायच्या त्या कानावर पडत . त्यामुळे संगीत नेहमी आपल्या आयुष्याचा भाग म्हणून अंगात भिनले. त्यांचे वडिलांनी आपल्याला असलेल्या विविध विषयाबद्दल असलेल्या ज्ञानाचे कधीच प्रदर्शन केले नाही , जरी ते त्या प्रत्येक दालनाचे जाणकार होते. नाटक सादर करताना कोणते राग केव्हा वापरायचे यांचे अचूक ज्ञान त्यांना होते. त्यामुळे त्यांचा प्रभाव नाटकाच्या मूडवर परिणाम कसा करील हे त्यांना माहीत होते. त्या फक्त गाणेच शिकल्या नाहीत तर त्यांना संगीताच्या सैद्धांतिक पैलूबद्दलही माहिती मिळवली.पंडित अरविन्द भाईंच्या एका प्रश्नाला उत्तर देताना त्या म्हणाल्या की जयपूर घराण्याने नाटकांपासून स्फूर्ति घेतली . भास्कर राव बखले, मास्टर कृष्ण राव , गोविंदराव टेंबे यांनी महाराष्ट्रात आलेल्या शास्त्रीय संगीतकारांसाठी प्रेक्षकांची निर्मिती केली ज्यावेळी श्री भास्करबुवा बखले यांनी अल्लादिया खान साहेबांकडून प्रशिक्षण घेतले त्यांनी जयपुर घराण्यांची बंदिशे त्यांनी नाट्य सृष्टी साठी अधिक परिणामपूर्वक वापरली आणि पुढे बालगंधर्वच्या कडून वदवून घेतली. सुजन कसा मन हे ऐकल्यानंतर म्हटल्यानंतर अरेच्या तर हा राग भूप असे श्रोत्यांना समजले. नाथ हा माझा यामध्ये हरवा मोरा रे| अशी जयपूर घराण्याची गेय बंदिश आहे.शास्त्रीय संगीताची सौंदर्यविषयक बाजू रंगभूमीने बाहेर आणली असे म्हटले तर ते गौण होणार नाही. श्री अरविन्द भाईना उत्तरादाखल सांगताना त्या म्हणाल्या की अनेकांना अशी भावना आहे की जयपुर घराणे हे गुंतागुंतीचे आणि रस नसलेले आहे. नीरस आहे . कोणत्या प्रमाणात, मी माझ्याकडे असलेल्या घटकांचा वापर केला. याचा अंतिम परिणाम समोर येतो. ते रसपूर्ण आहे की रसहीन आहे हे सिद्ध होते. रागांचा पण आपला स्वभाव असतो , एक प्रकारची तब्येत पण असते. प्रत्येक सूराचा प्रत्येक रागामध्ये आविष्कार अलग असतो. एखादी मुलगी लहानपणापासून ते प्रगल्भ होईपर्यंत निरनिराळ्या थरांतून प्रवास करते , त्या रूपाला अनुसरून तिचे वागणे असले पाहिजे. तिच्याकडे त्या प्रत्येक टप्प्यासाठी योग्य प्रमाणात भावना असणे आवश्यक आहे. रागांचे सुरांच्याबरोबर जे नाते आहे ते जर सांभाळले गेले नाही तर राग बेसूर होऊ शकतो. प्रत्येक घराण्याची शिष्य तयार कण्याची जी धाटण आहे ती जरी एक असली तरी शेवटी प्रत्येक शिष्यात फरक का जाणवतो याला उत्तर देताना श्रुती ताई त्यांचे वडिलांचे मत ऐकून उत्तरल्या की त्यांच्या गुरुनी त्याना सांगितले की ‘प्रत्येक धातूंचे अलंकार बनतील’ अशी खात्री नसते. एखादा शिष्य आल्यानंतर तो किती तयारीचा असू शकेल याचा गुरूला अंदाज असतो. याची मजल कुठेपर्यंत असू शकेल हे तो जाणतो.

पुढे चालू: केसरबाई केरकर जयपूर-अतरौली घराण्याच्या भारतीय शास्त्रीय गायिका असून घराण्याचे संस्थापक उस्ताद अल्लादिया खान यांच्या शिष्या होत्या . त्यांची तालिम करून घेताना खान साहेबांनी खूप परिश्रम केले होते आणि त्यांचा गळा साफ करून घेण्यास मदत केली . पण तसे मोगुबाई कुर्डीकरांचे बाबतीत घडले किवा नाही याबद्दल श्रुतीताईना ज्ञात नाही. कारण मोगुबाईंचे पहिले शिक्षण तालिम हैदर खान साहेबांच्या कडे झाली होती. उस्ताद अल्लादिया खान साहेबांच्या गळ्यावर खूप गायल्यामुळे दुष्परिणाम झाला होता आणि हैदर खान साहेबांच्या तसा फरक जाणवला नाही. पुढे उस्ताद अल्लादिया खान साहेबांचा सुधारला पण त्याच्यातील गोडी पूर्ववत आली नाही . त्यामुळे त्यांनी त्याला काही प्रमाणात हेतुपूरस्सर बदल करायला लागले. सुरांचा लगाव बदलला .उस्ताद अल्लादिया खान महाराष्ट्रात बडोदामार्गे १८६० नंतर आले आणि कोल्हापुरात २२ वर्षे शाहू महाराजांचे दरबारी राहिले . शाहूनचे मृत्युनंतर १९२२ साली ते मुंबईत स्थिर झाले ते त्यांच्या अंतापर्यंत. कोल्हापूरला यायचे आधी त्यांचे घराणे अल्लादिया खान घराणे म्हणून परिचित होते. कोल्हापूरला आल्यावर ते कोल्हापूर घराणे या नावाने रूपाला आले. लोकानी अल्लादिया खान यांना सांगितले की तुमची गायकी सगळ्यांपेक्षा निराळी आहे . तेव्हापासून ती जयपुर घराणे या नावाने पुढे आली. तानी कागलकर या श्रुतीनच्या मावशी अल्लादिया खानांच्या शिष्या होत .त्यांना त्यांनी पूर्ण निष्णात केले होते. जेव्हा तानी बाई वारल्या , त्यावेळी त्यांच्या आईना अल्लादिया म्हणाले की तानीबाई नाही गेल्या तर अल्लादिया गेले. पुढे केसर बाई आणि इतर विद्यार्थी होते त्यांना ध्रुपद गायकीतील खडेपणा कमी करून गळ्याला त्रास कमी होईल याकडे लक्ष दिले. काही वर्षे एखाद्या घराण्याचा अभ्यास केल्यानंतर दुसऱ्या घराण्याकडे वळणे प्रशस्त आहे का अशा प्रश्नाला उत्तर देताना त्या म्हणाल्या प्रत्येक शिष्य श्रद्धेने गुरूना आचरत असतो त्यामुळे पुढे जर घराणे बदलले तर तफावत होऊ शकते. त्यामुळे शक्यतो घराणे बदलू नये. याला अपवाद म्हणजे कोण असेल तर भास्कर बुवा बखले, ज्यांनी तीन घराण्यांच्या परंपराना पूर्ण आत्मसात केले . शेवटी त्यांच्या गुरुनी फर्माविले की तुम्ही आता अल्लादिया खानांकडे जा . श्रुतीजीनी आशा रीतीने जयपुर घराण्याची विविध अंगे विषद करून श्रोत्यांना समजतील अशा सोप्या भाषेत सांगितली. त्यांना शतशः नमस्कार !

Can anyone please explain in the first 20 mins she demonstrates the lay baddh aalap whereas as according to me she was singing bada khayal bandish in vilambit lay and was elaborating the same. Then why is it called lay baddh alaap and what is the difference?

Alap is usually performed in an indiscernible tempo. When the tempo is discernible as in Jaipur Gharana, it is called Laya badhha alap.
