My friend went there with an invitation to join the owner and do some digging. Ended up doing some trading and scored a couple fist sized chunks and boy howdy does it light up. He said the vein they were in was at least six inches wide and went straight up from where they were standing. Guess a bunch was mined that day what with the owner having the needed tools. That clear orange is gorgeous.

Nice video of the digging, the pit and the product. Thanks for your work. I dug there in late August, working on that lower vein you first showed. Even with a heavy hammer, the basalt is almost unyielding. That hole is a lot deeper than I left it.
@1JawsJr5 жыл бұрын
I was told that I got a lot of material out of that hole. The lady after me worked like crazy and hardly got anything. I sat and studies the rock before I started removing it and well it worked. I am looking forward into going back.

for all you hounders out there....I used to know a guy who worked in the Angell Bros quarry on the outskirts of Portland (on the way to Scappoose, Hwy 30). He pulled 100's of lbs of Orange, red and yellow opal out of that quarry and literally lined his entire front yard in it. If anyone could get access, there is a tin of that stuff there. Also, it came out in very large chunks
@1JawsJr5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure it was opal? That quarry was known for Agates...
@winnievanorden15 жыл бұрын
@@1JawsJr 100% positive. Im a jeweler and a flint knapper, so I know opal material. I made some beautiful arrowheads out of it. No agate ever flaked like that. We always called it Honey Opal and it ranges from totally translucent to a kind of spun honey look that is more opaque. If you like, I can send you pictures. Some was even a deep brown.

did any of the specimens have fire or were they just red, orange and yellow common Opal?
@1JawsJr5 жыл бұрын
This is not common opal according to the claim owner. Oregon Fire Opal is through out this small area known as Juniper Mountain.
@rebeccaofsunnybrookefarm84695 жыл бұрын
1JawsJr , I'm just curious, because they say that the portion which does not can't fire or color flash isn't considered the same as the portion which does. I love the colors and all types of Opal. I have several specimens of different areas
