Today on The Skid Factory, Al & Woody make up some Fuel lines using a bunch of Raceworks A/N Fittings plumbing the Go Fast Bits FXR Fuel Pressure Regulator and relocate the battery into the boot running the cables through the inside of the car to a firewall isolation block.
Raceworks make a bunch of stuff rather than just A/N fittings, check out the range here!

AN ( army navy) fittings where originally designed for aircraft back in WW2. I was an aircraft technician on F111’s in the RAAF and later on a crew chief on Tornado jets in Saudi working for BAE Systems. The AN fittings used are mil-spec to ensure quality.

A similar type of cutter is used on bicycle gear and brake cable housing. The cable housing is steel reinforced on the outside and has an internal tube of Teflon. Also needs a tapered pin to make the Teflon round after cutting. A cutting wheel (like a Dremel) can also be used, but the proper cutters are faster.

Excellent - I can stop looking for the mystery fuel leak in my boot now,. The smell isn’t too bad - clears fairly quick once the boot lid is opened, but I might have to consider changing the lines in the boot. I used bulkhead connectors to go through the floor, so it won’t be too hard to fix. Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I've worked on aircraft for 23 years an fittings are the same it's an industry standard that's come from aircraft and moved its way into multiple genres. It wouldn't be allowed to use hand-built softlines for fuel only Hardline flared fittings.
@garyhowe88

Or you could say it's the industry standard in other industries using JIC fittings and aerospace adopted jic and just made them to a higher tolerance and call them AN..?
@bobwgower
@bobwgower 3 жыл бұрын
@@garyhowe88 Hello, also an aircraft mechanic. AN Army Navy fittings were developed by the US military as far back as world war 2 as the requirement for higher pressure hydraulic and pneumatic sources was needed. Things like hydraulic and pneumatic flight controls, landing gears and brake systems. However, MS Military Standard fittings and hoses are more widely used on High pressure hydraulics and AN on Pneumatic connections. It is relatively a very recent development in other industries, JIC were developed to serve a similar purpose to AN fittings but are not manufactured to as higher tolerance which keeps the manufacturing and therefore sales costs lower for the other industries where a failure would not likely cause the machine to fall out of the sky killing everyone.
@StatiXonfirE
@StatiXonfirE 3 жыл бұрын
I have also worked no aircraft for several years. Have had to do many fuel tank and hydraulic mods in my time, all is AN some flared and others flare less but like you said where possible hard lines and we use to do a lot of swaged fittings on hard lines. Again some Aluminium some Stainless
@garyhowe88
@garyhowe88 3 жыл бұрын
@@bobwgower I work on some very old machinery pre ww2 and also produced during and just after (even having the plaque to state its unpainted due to the war effort) and all the hydraulic and lubrication system used JIC. So I'd suggest they've probably been around as long as each other.

A twin engine Cessna once had to land on Ferntree Gully Road in Glen Waverley because of a failed fuel line... Mechanic at Moorabin Airport messed up. 17 year old at the helm with his parents on board, he got it down through all the power lines and had to run a red light. Nearly intact, clipped a wing on a power pole before he could get it stopped, but they all walked away from it. Gun pilot, crap mechanic...
