The small hole on the side is a fill valve pull it out as you fill it, you are welcome

You're not letting air out its propane gas. Fill the small cylinder at room temperature THEN put it in the freezer. take it out of the freezer and fill it again. Use a kitchen scale and don't put any more than 1lb in the cylinder. Temperature follows pressure and pressure follows temperature, use physics.

What do u mean....when the tank is empty it has air in it....when u fill it with propane where does the air go....its still in there....thats why u let it out so u can use that space for more propane

ace hardware sells a solid brass adapter that is worth the $18 that doesn't have the hose and valves... just screw together flip the big one And open its valve. purge without changing anything by pushing the relief valve to vent some of the vapor pressure to allow more liquid propane in. yes I know it's a 3yrs old comment but I reply to help the next guy who sees it

If you don't weigh the cylinder before and after filling, you can overfill it. Put it in your hot car to go camping and the relief valve starts to let propane into your car. This is not the safe way to refill cylinders.

I would definitely just get an adapter to use the 20lb tank directly. The small cans I would only use to save space and hauling the 20lb tank places. But if I couldn’t bring the 20lb tank I’d get new small bottles. I’d only refill the small bottles if they had just ran out. If they old they could be rusty inside. Also I wouldn’t want to travel with refilled bottles. And any time I have used part of a small bottle and took it off to save it… it has always leaked. I’ve never successfully saved part of a small bottle. So a refilled small bottle I wouldn’t trust it not to leak.
