Excellent presentation. I'm over 80 and learning the game late in life as my sister needed a partner. So I'm playing with people that have played for 30 or 40 years, I need to learn quickly ! Your videos are very informative Thanks

Enjoy these videos, short & to the point, however would like if an alternative scenario or two are added just by way of comments, e.g. in this case if the 16 pt hand has Jxx in hearts what is the response in case the rest of suits are split 4/3/3, so no 5 carder suit, negative double also not possible as no shortage in hearts

Thanks for your question Vijay: a 16 pt hand with Jxx is borderline, so many will pass and defend the contract. Others may opt for a ‘strength double’ (usually 17+ with a decent suit) - double first and then bid your suit over partner’s response.

Would N not bid 2H to transfer S to spades? Then they can invite with 3NT and S can finish in 4S. Same result but the strong hand is concealed.

Yes, many will have an agreement to play transfers over 1NT overcalls - but if not, 3S seems the best response.

You can agree with partner to play Stayman and Transfers over a 1NT overcall (called ‘systems on’) or play two of a suit as a natural weak bid (systems off!) I prefer to keep 2-level (unbid) suit bids as a natural take-out bid with a weak hand. Either way, if opponents interfere after the 1NT overcall, it’s usual for all systems to be ‘off’.
