Your video shakes old memories/ The good news is the thrill never goes away. Excitment even grows later on, because you now know how to get there :-) And suddenly, you wake up 40 years later, still windsurfing even in 4°C winter water. Addictive, magic, not negociable... 👍

Heehee! Good one my man!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆 Back in the day, I used to only sail longboards, and I'm talking 370 to 375 cms longboards! But I was never really up on the plane with them. But One day, I was loaned a Mistral Ventura by the local windsurfing shop. OMG! The conditions were right, and I went faster that I had ever imagined going!! It was epic!!!!!!! So I know exactly how you felt when you made this video!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍😁

Took me also longer than expected to have both feet in, but it is the best feeling ever. Control by the feet is so much more easy and steady. Planned over 5km steady in the east see of Germany. No crashes at all till today. With one in I crashed a few times. Makes no sense except slow wind.

Yes, I see you "planing" at 1:50. Planing is a weird feeling. All of a sudden the board get's very slippery and goes faster. It is actually like "doing a wheelie" on a skateboard or bicycle. So, you have to realize all the water contact is on the tail of the board. You must do two things: a.) Get aggressive with the boom and your back leaning to control the Planing "tilt". If wind is smooth, you can find a balance. If not, forward and back pulling will stabilize you. b.) Get aggressive with the heel/toe action to tilt/turn/carve the board on the water. When planing now your steering is all in your foot like a true surfboard. Except imagine riding a surfboard or skateboard "doing a wheelie". Enjoy
@stratosmuse

It looks like the best advice. It is a wheelie indeed. I haven't tried to forward and backward pull to find a balance. It will be my next task. Thank you for your comment!

> Get aggressive with the heel/toe action to tilt/turn/carve the board on the water Yeah - that feeling of carving and possibly chasing small bumps/waves is amazing and it's really not that hard with the two steps in the foot straps. Comes naturally and is a very efficient way to steer the board as well.

Nice video! You're doing great! It may ring a bell to some windsurfers remembering their own very first moments too!... Please NOTICE that : 1°) you did rigged the boom in the wrong way up/down: the drilled holes we can see on the boom tailed should be oriented down, the reason is to evacuate possible water from inside the boom... Also, if any brand name or writing on the boom grip, the correct assembling should be when you can read them in the correct way!... 2°) better not to use a boom at maximum extension size, this as relation with the boom stiffness and durability Thanks for this nice video!

Wow never noticed that! I'm not sure if this was the reason that it broke some days after this video. Thank God it broke from the side I was using to go deep and I managed to turn back without swiming or beeing rescued. Thank you for your comments.

That’s not correct at all. All my boom ends have the holes drilled in the top, with the adjustment rings pointing downwards. The brand name printed on the boom, in the correct reading, has the holes in the end piece UPWARDS. The boom in the vid is correctly rigged on the mast.
@philippemallejac5023

@@wisecoonie Hello! Make the test yourself, just holding your boom putting the boom tail on the water with the adjusting holes oriented in up side, even if there is some kind of soft plastic in the tail's tubes, it can get easily over 1.5 , 2 meters or even more this is related to your boom length and meet some water pressure that can make some water coming inside, then get your boom out of the water and return it the holes oriented to the down side and see if some water is leaking... It seems even logic! You can also check at some rigging windsurfing sails videos online, better those one shot from the brands or racers or even ask advises at you local surfshop. Have fun! ;-D

Hello @@wisecoonie , I also saw some brands like NEILPRYDE having the extension boom tail holes oriented upside such as on some carbon booms, I guess holes are waterproof in such case, but other booms, mainly aluminum booms, use to have holes oriented downside, like on my ex NEILPRYDE X3 180-230 boom that I've just sold as second hand, yesterday... Logic would be to have holes oriented downside in order to evacuated water from the boom, which is quite logic if holes are not waterproof; the risk would be to navigate with a heavier boom!... I may have an interesting idea: as I am going to receive a new stock of brand new booms in the coming days (aluminum and carbon types), I will shoot a video of presentation, then I could post it on my amateur "KZfaq channel" (and will send you a link), this could be an interesting opportunity to verify that point...

Hello Stratosmuse, can you share a feedback? When you rig your sail with your boom brand printed on the grip vertically in the correct way (please check on both sides!), then what is the orientation of the boom tail extension holes: upside or downside? Thanks ;-D

Hi Philippe, Unfortunately, that boom has broken, after or before a massive catapult. (I'm not sure If I felt because of the boom breaking or the opposite.) I remember that I was always checking logo to be on the right side, but I cannot be sure.

Thanks @@stratosmuse for your very prompt response... From what you say we can mention about WARRANTY: normally boom's manufacturers provide a WARRANTY DOCUMENT and a client CLAIM FORM, WARRANTY should cover at least ONE YEAR for normal use, some BRANDS like the one I am about to introduce in a further video covers TWO YEARS, including tubes deformation under normal sailing circumstances, even catapult, but NOT on over powered situation...

You put your foot in the footstrap BEFORE you had the first planning experience? that's confusing. I'm pretty much in the same situation, but I've planned a couple of times - with the same shouting by the way :D But never tried the footstrap so far.
@stratosmuse
@stratosmuse 3 жыл бұрын
Planing in footstraps is the thing. it feels safer and it is faster. Depending on the board, sometimes you can get in the foot straps before planing. with my equioment and weight, this is not possible. So, it was hard for me to get in the straps, while I'm planing. Though I'm getting better and better. Soon (after the lockdown) I will upload my progress, I hope it will help you. ps: Shouting is priceless

I think you're asking wether I managed to turn back? As for the back foot, I recently found out that I have to turn a bit upwind in order to be able to slide my back foot in to the strap. till then I became a catapult expert.
@wisecoonie
@wisecoonie 3 жыл бұрын
I sailed a couple of seasons with only m’y front foot in the strap. As long as you are leaning down and out, as any Windsurf coach would encourage you to do, there is little risk of catapulting. However, you really need to commit to the harness. This in turn will allow you to close the sail more and eventually open up the possibility to put your back foot in the strap. If you do not commit to your harness, in other words: if you leave your sail open all the time, chances are that a gust will indeed suddenly catapult you forwards. So, remember to really really commit to your harness. And when you succeed in leaning back and out, you will be able to place your back foot right next to the back footstrap and push much more through your legs and resist the pull of the sail much better.
@wisecoonie
@wisecoonie 3 жыл бұрын
@@stratosmuse the fact that at 2:00 you lose your harness line, just proves that you should commit much more to your harness. The harness line needs to be so taught that you are unable to hook out unvoluntarily. As you do so at 2:00, proves that there is not enough tension on the harness line. This would not happen if you really lean back and out.
@stratosmuse
@stratosmuse 3 жыл бұрын
@@wisecoonie Most of the times, when I commit to the harness, I feel that I will fall (stall), or sometimes I do fall back. I still don't feel comfortable on harness. You can check my new video.
