Honestly, there is a lot more to installing a sound post. Location is everything -- and how to determine the correct location, as well as fine adjustments for tone. To fit and adjust a new post properly may take hours. Nice video showing the basics of a post install, but cranking a post into a vertical position like that can crack the top. Love you guys-- don't mean to be critical!

Going to buy these tools! Father in Law built violins in the last years of his life. Excellent Violins! I own number 26 that he built. Ed wasn’t afraid to try things out. He tried to build Violins that fit the person. He even built 8 string Violins of which we have one. He built an 8 string Violin for an Israeli Violinist bye the name of Daniel Hoffman. Mr Hoffman put some videos on KZfaq of him playing that Violin. Looking forward to setting the post in my Violin and joining my 8 year old Daughter as she plays! She is playing one of Edward Hagan’s Violin. Ed made her a Violin that fir her well but she outgrew it already and is playing one that he made for a student.

Hi Fiddlerman. You make it look so easy, but it's not. this may be a stupid question but is there a reason it's not help with a tiny dot of glue top and bottom?
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 3 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question. The soundpost can be adjusted, moved closer or further to the bridge for more or less power and action. It can be moved more towards the treble side or base side for darkness/brightness.... The tops of thin wooden instruments change shape over time which usually makes the post too short and one must either move the soundpost outwards towards the f-hole, or make a new post. Lastly, if you glue the post and it gets moved, or the top raises over time, the post would take some of the top and or bottoms wood with it. Over time the wear would be greater.

How did you record the inside of the violin. And why loosen the strings
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 3 жыл бұрын
We have this small thin camera that we use to look inside our instruments to inspect. When the strings are tight the bridge is pressing down on the top. You want the post to fit snuggly when the strings are loose. If you don't loosen the strings, you risk damage to the top when removing the soundpost from all the downwards pressure, and you risk the sound post falling whenever strings get loose or changed afterwards. Cheers!

I know to change strings one at a time to keep tension on the instrument and avoid the sound post falling. But if the sound post is properly fit and snug, it should NOT fall even with no strings or tension. Correct?
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 11 күн бұрын
That is correct, however, humidity, temperature, and wood movement over time, plays a part as well. When the luthier sets the post they do it with loose or no strings, but over time, the top can rise, the temperature that was present at the time that they set the soundpost might be different then when you loosen your strings. There is a great chance that the post will tumble if you release the pressure especially if you handle or move the instrument around too much when it doesn't have that pressure.

Hi my violin E string is quite less louder than others. Can soundpost position solve this matter . Or make sound to base and treeble?
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 10 ай бұрын
This is common. The reason is that the E string is steel and your other strings are not. When playing on the E, perhaps less pressure and further from the bridge. A soundpost position closer to the bass side of the bridge might help a little.

@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman Жыл бұрын
Anywhere from right behind it, start of the edge of the bridge touches the start of the edge of the post or maybe a half mm space to 1.5 thickness of the post. Usually one soundpost thickness is pretty good. I'll normally start at 5 mm behind the bridge and move it in different directions from there till I find the optimal sound,.

@1stfiddlerman

Dryness is the biggest contributor to cracks on instruments. In your case it might have been a badly joined neck but it's hard to tell without examining the instrument. Could have been connected too tightly at the top. The block might not be properly glued to the top at that spot as well. How old is the instrument? Tell me more about the instrument.

At Fiddlershop, my shop, we do it for free and have never charged anyone. However, most violin shops charge. I've heard that they charge up to $30 just to re-insert the post. We do of course charge to make and install a new sound-post. You can get these tools from Fiddlershop if you follow the links under this video.

This is just like everything else, watching a gymnast, a tennis player, whatever it maybe, and when they do it so effortlessly, that they make it look easy, like anyone can do it. Don’t fall for it. Only Pierre can do this. I’ll try nevertheless... then I’ll send my violin to him. Or just buy a new one from him. Don’t try this at home, Pierre is a highly trained professional with decades of experience, trying this without professional training is dangerous. Costs a violin.

I'll stick to sending it to my luthier. It's way too risky to DIY an adjustment and really easy to mess up. It's always best to send it to a knowledgeable luthier, and if you take it to the person who made your instrument, they'll often do it for free. If they don't, I've never seen it cost more than $25 to adjust a sound post.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 5 жыл бұрын
I agree entirely. However, I did it myself the first time back in the day and I figured it out. Everyone who does it has to learn sometime. One should obviously exercise caution, especially with a valuable instrument. :) Some people have very inexpensive instruments and not much to loose. We also adjust and reset fallen sound-posts for free. We've never charged anyone. That being said, we've had customers tell us what they have paid elsewhere to have this done. It's not always cheap. Thanks for watching!

@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 4 жыл бұрын
The soundpost is very vulnerable when there is no downward pressure from the bridges and tightened strings. One would almost have to jam the soundpost in a bit too tightly to insure that it doesn't fall down. We (fiddlershop.com) ship our instruments to customers with pressure on the strings so that we can adjust the soundpost and ensure that it will most likely be set right and sound the best when you receive it.
