I run middle distance track, and i’ve had the fortune/misfortune to compete against some olympic level talents. For me when they started out with a strong pace, you just try not to follow and maintain your own strategy and expect them to bonk after abit. But as the race goes on, and the laps run down, and they’re increasing the pace, and you keep thinking “oh, they’re gonna bonk now”.. “maybe now” “maybe now” “right about now”..... and then they’ve finished miles ahead of you

there have been tons of analyses on why ledecky is able to swim like this, but she's actually doing one kick per arm cycle for everything besides the last lap, where she kicks like people are taught to for freestyle. it conserves energy and the one-kick-per-cycle means she's staying streamlined (trying to kick just for the sake of kicking can slow you down)

It interests me that with all the technology and advancements we have these days, dogma still persists with technique in many sports. With swimming, water is so dense that form and technique have a *huge* impact on performance. It's clear that Ledecky's streamlined style with a minimalist kick is significantly quicker over this distance than traditional stroke styles, but so few people are using it, even at the top level. It's the same with many other notable swimmers. I've had a fair bit of experience with a style of swimming coaching that teaches form and obsesses over streamlining, and the transformative results are truly astonishing. In my usual sport of running, form plays a part, but nothing like this.

It's very difficult to do properly and effectively, not like the leading arm development, thats why the athletes didnt really swap to it

@@Lo33y_ Yes, it took me three years of one to one coaching with underwater cameras to get competent. However, I’m a nobody - this is the highest level of international competition. All these swimmers have had millions thrown at them. It just surprises me in that context.

@@RobManser77 They probably tried it but just couldn't get it as fast as them doing it the way they used to.

@@Lo33y_ Yes, if they didn’t persist, it would be slower for a while until they reached a decent level of competence. For me, and I presume everyone, the difference in pace and effort once you e cracked it is startling.
