First broadcast: Mar 2015.
Episode 15/15 Lauren Child, author, illustrator and creator of Charlie & Lola, has a secret passion - dolls' houses. She's been working on her own dolls' house for the past 30 years and her lifelong obsession continues to inspire her ideas and shape her work. But why do these interior worlds have the power to cast a spell beyond childhood?
Lauren explores the history of dolls' houses from some of the earliest examples to their modern incarnations, speaks to craftspeople who create perfect miniatures and meets ardent collectors willing to pay big money for tiny objects of desire.

This was excellent. I have watched Part 1 and 2 twice and likely again and maybe again and again. It inspired me so much that I bought, online, an old wooden dolls house that I’m going to do up, over time, to fulfil a childhood dream. Thank you Art Documentaries and Laura for inspiring me to meet an unmet childhood need. As the psychotherapist who was interviewed said, it doesn’t matter if you’re forty or eighty. Forever grateful.

I am so grateful that you shared this! ... This is one of the most wonderful videos I've watched on youtube... I have always had a huge passion for miniatures... It is so magical to furnish and decorate little rooms, rooms which might be small, but are roomy for the imagination!... I am blind and I have a theory that i might be so fascinated by the miniature world, because it gives me the oportunity to "see" / feel things in my hands that I don't usually get a whole picture of. I mean, it's hard to put your hands around a whole house or a grandfather clock. Keep up the great work! Take care!! Greetings from Nenne in Sweden

I have a beautiful Queen Anne doll house that I have been working on in stages since 2008, but have been collecting the miniatures inside since 1980. When it came time to decorate the 13 room house, I was very insistent that my dining room be pristine. I saw Karen’s China under the Stokesay brand and ordered from her a complete service for 6 in the blue willow pattern. I used sterling silver flatware and serving pieces, real linen napkins, sterling silver charger plates and real crystal glassware. It looks amazing. I got my inspiration from Queen Mary’s dolls house and wanted that level of perfection. So far I have invested nearly $50,000 on my house and it is loaded with museum quality miniatures in perfect 1/12 scale, many of the interior items were commissioned one of a kind pieces from artists all over the world. Every room in the house is electrified with both lights and outlets and they are all on their own circuit so that I can light them individually or all together. The outlets are just in case I need to move a light around or if I purchase a lamp in the future. I did buy all the chandeliers and table lamps and wall sconces, fireplace coals at the same time as you have to work in stages with a dolls house. I was lucky and got to go to the Las Vegas miniature convention as a buyer and purchased $10,000 worth of furnishings at one time. The house which I 4 feet high and 4 feet wide with a tower and a rooftop conservatory has had to be transferred to the miniature craftsman house three times. I built the basic house but he did all the circuitry and lighting, the floors and finish carpentry and the wallpapers which were all imported from Spain some 30 different designs as each room had papered ceilings as well and three to four patterns on the walls. I had a house fire and amazingly the dolls house was not even touched thank the Lord, but it had to be crated up while they rebuilt my house. I have since moved out of state and the house has been in its crate now for 4 years. I’m just getting ready to unpack it. I have to have built a display stand for it, decorate all the exterior gardens and have all the draperies made and it will finally be finished.

What dedication!!! I have been collecting and making miniatures for my "when I grow up I will have a dollhouse" dollhouse since 1976 when I bought my first dining room table and four chairs in a small gift shop when my family had a short holiday trip to Toronto and Niagra Falls. I have bought a piece here and there as money and the opportunity became available. Family Circle Magazin in the late 70s, early 80's offered a plan and instructions for a cardboard dollhouse (Victorian and detailed) for free if you wrote in. I found the magazine again in the late 90s and wrote them: the instructions and plan would have cost over $100 at that time. Not an option for me... thanks to online tutorials and such, however, the dream has promise of becoming a reality. Room boxes (displayed in bookshelves) are also a lovely option. Unfortunately, where I live, you have to buy the crate of wine to get the "free" crate, so cardboard it is... Have you ever tried to make your own miniatures? Sometimes the materials are quite expensive and so it is clear why the miniatures have a high price (the time and craftsmanship that go into them are inestimable). How fortunate you are to be able to afford the museum quality - I admire your dedication all the same. Seeking, finding and having the "perfect" piece made is also a challenge, having the funds doesn't make a great dolls' house... the love for the house and the attention to detail do...
