2-27-10 Hawaii Tsunami Warning

At 6:00 AM HST, All Civil Defense sirens sound for a real tsunami warning in Hawaii. A giant earthquake in Chile triggered the tsunami.
I loaded up what I could, evacuated from Kalama Valley below and headed up Kamehame ridge. The sirens sounded on the hour thereafter, and I recorded the 8:00AM sounding with my iPhone. I stayed up here until the all-clear signal was given.
Luckily, Hawaii and other Pacific areas did not have a devastating tsunami, but Chile is definitely going to need some help.

The Kamiloiki 1212 sounded like a 2t22 when it originally wound up, then when the pitch dropped it sounded like a Carter. That thing is trippy.

i like how the EOWS 1212 sounds like a XT22. very cool that they set the tone to the old 10/12 port sirens.

2020 update: This EOWS 1212 was replaced with a Modulator 6024B a few years ago.

Here is a proper list of ALL the types of sirens in Hawaii sorted by popularity (popularity may vary as sirens are being replaced): Modulator 2 EOWS 612 DSA Thunderbolt EOWS 1212 STH-10 SIRcom Hörmann SD-10 STL-10 RSH Thunderbeam 2T22 Model 2 (I might of missed something but it looks to be complete. I'll add anything I missed)

@gboot08 where at? Kamehame Ridge? The resident manager made an exception to evacuees due to the circumstances. HPD patrolled the area too, and they just checked up to make sure everything was okay.

@murrfarms Yeah I'm glad we made it. It's an EOWS1212 in the valley below (Swanzy Beach is on the other side of the island), and it sounds like it's going to die soon. it suffers the same sickness the Swanzy Beach EOWS612 has: bad controller/battery I'm guessing. It seems no one has called it in.

Wow, that EOWS is on it's very last legs from the sounds of it. That isn't the Swanzy Beach Park 612 is it? Glad you guys made it out alright!

@warubozu47 Nah no worries Jeff. DEM & Civil Defense gotta do what they gotta do! While I can't do much in BFS, I be sure to keep a lookout on the next batch of sirens being purchased. I gotta push that button one day... What's up with that Kamiloiki Valley EOWS1212? I've talked to some residents in that area and they said it's been sounding like that for a while during alert signals. Bad controller? Batteries? Geckos & centipedes getting inside again?

I Went To The Kamiloiki 1212 On 2012 It Kept Sounding That For A Long Time And Time Goes By And Gets Replaces

At my school, our P.E teacher flat out said that if a tsunmai hits, the unfit kids will die. We're right next to the ocean and a couple months ago we were supposed to just have a test drill but it ended up being a real drill. Thankfully no tsunmai came

Ohh ok, I couldn't tell where you were when you shot the video lol. Yeah it sounds a lot like the EOWS612 at Swanzy Beach, but this one seems to start out higher and almost instantly drop in pitch. Sounds like the controller's capacitors are going out, or it was damaged by something such as lightning or water.

the eows 1212 at kamiloiki neighborhood park and the modulator at Kamiloiki elementry school and the rsh 10 at the water treatment those 3 sirens are being replaced
