in my experience of nearly 50 years 'trying' I can confirm after doing the jazz course at LCSP that the 251 is a portal opener to a new playground of music and of course the american songbook which most pianists thrive on. This morning I played 251's in descending keys fitting in to a melody which emerged, to my delight. It is one of the most crucial foundations if you want to advance and locked doors to new repertoire open almost instantly with a bit more work. The shape thing also migrates you to other keys but i found it best to keep to simpler keys for a while and get some real enjoyment.

Hello there Tom. This is just the start I needed (and I am a “shape” learner lol). Especially with the 251 progression. I don’t really understand jazz or what it is supposed to sound like. Sometimes it just sounds like random notes or chords going up and down with not much sense.... or even verses or choruses lol. But I know these chords can help me with other styles to incorporate them into my playing. Again a huge thanks and I will start with the basic chord shapes to get them under my fingers. Still want to come to your school, just saving some funds. 😘

Hello Tom, for me the most beautiful sounding turn I found out in the key of Db major by trial and error: in the bass the note Ab in the right hand successively the notes Gb (the seventh), Bb (the ninth), C (the third) and Eb (the fifth). Then simply change this Ab9 to DbMaj13 by changing in the bass to the note Db and in the right hand only the note Gb to F. The sound is really beautiful. It sounds so beautiful. Apart from being a DbMaj13 chord, is there a specific name for this sound character? german: Hallo Tom, die für mich am schönsten klingende Wendung, die ich in der Tonart Db Dur durch probieren herausgefunden habe: Im Bass der Ton Ab in der rechten Hand nacheinander die Töne Gb (die Septime), Bb (die None), C (die Terz) und Eb (die Quinte). Dann einfach diesem Ab9 zu DbMaj13 indem man im Bass zum Ton Db wechselt und inder rechten Hand nur den Ton Gb zu F macht. Klingt so richtig schön. Gibt es - außer dass es ein DbMaj13 Akkord ist - dafür eine bestimmte Bezeichnung für diesen Klang Charakter?
