2-5-1 Progression Explained

There are many chord progressions, but some are more than they appear!
The ii-V-I progression is a fundamental harmonic cadence, we'll uncover it here in this video.

Does anyone else feel incredibly lucky to have discovered Chris's lessons/channel during its infancy? Just finished watching this latest video and realized that it is the first time (literally) that I have watched every video all the way through on any KZfaq channel. Great channel! I am a bass player, 30+ years but have always “played” guitar. I also understand a lot of theory, but have a huge gap actually using/applying it. I just started practicing guitar seriously and this channel is amazing. It also showed me I need a strat just like that one, beautiful!

Chris, in the few weeks I’ve been following you, you’ve opened up the neck to me in some great ways. These triad exercises are wonderful! I watched this early this morning, then tonight went up and down the neck playing this progression knowing I had three strings to use. I was Even able to loop the progression and played the chord tones (with some A Major scale notes) in the different spots. Thought I actually sounded like a musician :). Thanks again - your friend from the sunny blue skies and land of red or green!

It's amazing to think that I overlooked my first lesson on triads a few years ago. What I saw as boring versions of chords have become the gateway to understanding the neck. Just shows that revisiting things with more context is important. Thanks!

Thanks Christian! yeah 2-5-1 has long been a "jazz" progression but it is so useful as a turnaround.

There is so much depth to this. It opens up so much of possibilities on how to play the notes. My mind is trying to wrap around extending this to the other strings. Furthermore, seeing how beautiful it sounds keeping the chords near each other, I wonder if you can do the something similar with the 1-4-5 progression or even something with the 3-4 as those two are almost just half step apart.

You make the constructs so easy to understand. My only wish is that I could focus on them while I am practicing. I spent to much time playing blind. Learning is relatively easy compaired to unlearning bad habits. I have been putting some of what I already picked up from your lessons to good use. Compliments are affirming and a sure sign for me at least. I would share my recent work ,I am still working out the sound quality. Just wanted to say thank you so much for this and all your posts. @@curiousguitarist Up loaded the one I am working on , bare with me it is just in the Infantiles stage of developement, titled WIP . Everytime I watch one of your lessons I pick up something new that was right under my fingers. The recording is from a few days ago. much has changed since then. I just need time to sit down and get it on tape. so to speak.

I really wish guitar teachers would teach triads earlier. People complain that theory is hard on guitar, but I think it's only hard because beginners are forced to learn through cowboy chords and barre chords. If triads are taught early the things Chris shows here will be apparent. Triads were the thing that allowed me to stop "mashing buttons" on the guitar and actually start playing music.

My brain blitzed for awhile trying to think through your hard to see B minor, and plot it out, kind of already wanting to find a simpler grouping of the chords. Then I blitzed that we were on 2,5,1 and not just making minors out of everything, or changing keys. Then alertness came back. 😄 Perhaps a spoon of almond butter. I had been practicing bending. Hee! Ah! ...and now I ken the keeping it on the same set of three strings all up and down. 🤗

I've always struggled with this so I'm happy to find a very useful lesson presented in a clear, concise, and engaging way. However, if i may offer some constructive criticism. It was just the what. I would really like to also get to grips with the why, when, where, and how, in a musical context. Any guidance would be appreciated by many others than myself i suspect. in the meantime I shall scour your channel for further gems like this.

I think I covered the Why of the cadence itself, but if not ask for more clarity there. As for the when and where, the 2-5-1 is a "turnaround" and can be used as is stock out of the box to return to ANY chord or key. So if you're trying to return to a G chord (for example) you'd start the cadence on an A minor (the 2 chord), then D major (the 5 chord), and then that goes directly to the G. I'll go further in subsequent videos for sure. Thanks for the critique Danny!

Neck size and practice. Some guitars make it feel like a breeze for me, and others are harder, but the more you do it the easier it is on any guitar. It doesn’t feel natural until it does. If you want that technique keep trying!!
