Just found this and I'm about to view the show, it's always a pleasure to watch and be mentored and entertained by you; your style of conversation and in particular your voice tone and accent reminds me of my electrical leading hand at Port Kembla. As for starter motors: they are series wound, that means they are very torque prone and are used for heavy loads, so if let run without a load they'll chase infinit speed thus the armature winding will dislodge and kaput; it was chasing it's --back EMF. electro motive force.

Absolutely great video with nothing left to explain. I remember that on the older starters that the PIVET pin adjust how far the starter engages with the starter ring. If it isnt adjusted correctly it will wear the starter ring out prematurely. I'm glad that I had someone like you to teach me the trade 60 odd years ago Mike. Have you ever thought of going into the teaching profession Mike, you are such a natural. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob.

Interesting Mike. Never delved into a starter like that. Quite a bit of engineering in it. A bubble bath in the ultrasonic will see that as good as new. Don't fancy getting all those brushes held back simultaneously but no doubt you'll sort it. Wonder if the North American friends got the Page 3 reference!

Very simple starter - easy to fix - not many parts available for it though

Mike very frustrating, I’m sure it’s difficult to get it all in the frame but we just want to see all you are doing! Very interesting non the less.

Would be interesting to see how Britpart, OEM, and genuine starters compare in the quality of their components.

I've rebuilt more of those starters than I care to remember, pretty straightforward job, even replacing the clutch unit isn't too bad......however I found that about 90% of them did NOT have the rubber boot within the solenoid, yet all still worked fine....odd

It must have been a modification to stop dirt getting into the solenoid

@@BritannicaRestorations ...sounds about right, however they worked for years without them in most cases....perhaps they got the boots as a job lot!

Interesting video again! That wire brush looks much healthier than any of mine! Does it get any use?

My 300tdi starter now usually takes two attempts to engage. I was thinking that it is a worn ring gear on the flywheel ...... but now I'm not so sure🤔🇻🇨

I would put money on it being the solenoid contacts getting bad
