Regarding this matter, we cannot find out the exact cause of the accident. We also attach great importance to this matter. The technical department has done in-depth research and discussion on this incident. The cause of burning is multi-layered, and there are problems with the product itself, as well as problems during use. But we can only look for potential defects from ourselves, improve our quality control, optimize software, etc. We are sorry to cause you worry and trouble. We believe these are temporary problems. We will not be timid and give up because of the current difficulties. We are already working hard on the road to solving difficulties...

Question did the battery pack rupture in some way, or was the short/problem in external wiring? The shorting of pins in the charging ports is always a possibility, it takes the addition of one component (a diode suitably rated) to prevent this.

Check at 10:42. You can see a cable in contact with a MOSFET (the hottest part of the board). I recall in another video, "somebody" making fun of how complex is built the V11. Now you see why... It is just the difference between building as a vehicle vs as a toy. Anyway, all EUC have bugs we should address. so, many thanks for this video. I would add that on toy-like units the minimum effort to decrease the risk of these emergencies would be to take a look inside, separate cables from heat sources and add insulation material where needed most. Generally, the source of the fire is a problem with cables/connector insulation and/or fried boards that ignite the plastic first and not the lithium cells that only later they add to the emergency as a flammable material once the temperature is high enough. Once the fire reaches the battery cells, they can increase the temperature of the fire up to 2000 ºC. I recommend to take a precautionary attitude, check in advance and protect these cables before having the emergency. Also check at the chargers (do not use them over sofa's, pillows, nor deep carpet etc). Chargers are also a source of risk when not used properly. Thanks WW.
@toddlarcombe89733 жыл бұрын
The v11 is definitely well built. It does have a design fault tho. It's the lights wires and one of them go right over a capacitor on the motherboard. Easy enough to fix. Other wise v11 has sealed batteries case. That alone makes it harder for external issues to effect the battery packs.
@gpsanino3 жыл бұрын
@@toddlarcombe8973 Hi Todd, I guess you mean the cables that go to the back tower? They are not connected to the site of the capacitor neither to the same PCB board. Instead, they are connected to another PCB installed on top of the control board. The cables pass close to the back part of one of the two big capacitors towards the tower on the back. They are for rear lights, speaker and power source for the USB port (5VCD/2.1A). Being low powered and close to just the back of the capacitor (not the electrodes) I do not see much of a risk there. However, everything can be improved and I would happily agree with a common standard in the industry about covering all wires until their connector, with anti-flammable socks unless the insulation material of the cables already has that property. On my mods I use cables rated to hold up to 600ºC. I do not know if these are of that type but I am ok with having them in the opposite side of the electrodes and of course not in touch of the MOSFET. Bugs on the V11? of course it has them too (of a different type though). I am working on a mod to extend the upper valves of the suspension to not have to remove side covers to adjust the upper chambers pressure. Also I wish the back PCB with the charging ports to be more insulated. Everybody uses the same plugs but I wish something that could be more tight and waterproof closed. I think is better to have them on the stern as the V11, rather than the front (more exposed to rain etc). But still I wish an easier way to plug it and safer. Crazy idea, what about well separated electrodes on the pedals, that connect with a stand, ONLY becoming hot when the unit is off and on that stand? No more exposed plugs... just brainstorming. thanks

I am sorry this happened, but so glad you are fine. I recall the drone industry had similar issues in the past and they improved on safety so much. Like smart batteries from DJI capable to self-discharge to safe levels when not used, with multiple sensors etc. I wish this approach could be transferred to EUCs. Also the chargers tend to be just generic units without even a cooling fan inside, nor the smart capabilities we would like them to have. Like smart chargers for drones that can balance each battery cell, check temperature, really cut the current when achieving a designated level etc. EUCs have gone far on increasing speed (to levels that in most of the world is not even legal), but still there are safety areas to improve even on Inmotion and KingSong units. Take care Tyler, kind regards

Manufacturers like Begode get away with producing devices at a very low standard, and get high margins in return, however I can assure you that if this happens again respective governments will notice, can you imagine if this happened in a place of employment fully staffed? Should this continue the EUC will be ban and you will have to wait around 3-5 years before riding again, this was the case with hooverboards. It is 2021 and there is no excuse for something like this.

Really informative video Adam 👍. Agree that EUCs. PLEVs are still very much in their infancy, leaving much room for product improvements. You mention about components potentially working loose etc. and this is where I'd like to weigh in another preventative measure "User Maintenance". These devices contain multiple battery connections, wiring connections and potentially sensitive electronics. Many will push their devices to the limits, going off road, high speed on road, kerbs steps, jumps or simply learning, because it's fun! Our devices will also experience drops, crashes etc. which while part of the risk of having fun, causes a lot of vibrations (stress even?) to the internal components. I mainly ride tarmac at comparatively slower speeds than most (no kerbs or steps), yet after a few months of riding was surprised to find a number of screws had worked loose and evidence of the odd cable starting to rub on sharp plastic edges. As a result I open my wheel up once every couple of months to ensure everything remains in good order internally. We shouldn't need to do this in an ideal world, but given the infancy of our devices, I feel regular basic user maintenance may help prevent such serious problems / extend the life of our devices! Stay safe everyone & thanks Adam! 😎 🙏

A too high current request to the battery pack has generates overheating point at the input supply of the motherboard which finich to causing a short-circuit / melding ( Like as Marty Backe with the Veteran Sherman Overheat Hill Stress or as Ronin Ryder with the Monster-Pro in New York City ) In the worst case the short-circuit/melding create a repetive/continuous short-circuit which causing a battery/cells overheat and then a successive cells explosion ( What i suppose happent for this Monster-Pro case ) Gotway should install a fuse at the output of each battery pack like as Veteran Sherman have updated his wheel ( This will so prevent battery/cells overheat and then a successive cells explosion )

I am all torn up about this video! On one hand I think it’s a very important topic and one that needs to be figured out and people need to be aware of it. But on the other hand how many potential EUC owners have just decided that there’s no way in hell they will ever buy any EUC or even go near one for that matter. A video like this could possibly change the perception of EUC‘s for the entire world! The only reason I’m bringing up this point is because I’m a new EUC owner and this video has really shaken me up. I think everyone knowing the stats about how many fires actually happen is extremely important we need to be able to put this in perspective. We can’t have the public being afraid that an electric unicycle is going to catch on fire and burn them when we ride by. Or a landlord saying you can't keep that in your apartment because it's a fire hazard!... What I'm trying to say is I think this video is very well-intentioned but it may have unintended consequences. News that causes a highly charged emotional state tends to lock in your memory. People who know little to no information about EUC who watch this are going to remember that EUC are dangerous and are fire hazards and unsafe. I think a very important component to a video like this is some sort of resolution to the problem. Or some kind of knowledge or positivity or statistic that helps us feel not so helpless and fearful of something that previously brought us so much joy.

As you said that both batteries had thermal runaway it might suggest that both were overdischarging for some reason (if there is enough of a heat barrier between them). Probably terminal short or some controlboard shortcircuit that would lead to high rate of discharge. If the wheel was driven at its maximum with failed BMS I would still expect that the thermal runaway would come sooner.

Very interesting video. Is it always 100v battery packs that burn? And is it always the 21700 type? I have a 100v Nikola arriving shortly so I'm fairly interested in all this! These are my random thoughts which will probably be useless: I could only find one instance of a Nikola burning but apparently this was an early model with batteries that they no longer use (Panasonic NCR21700A). Nikola's are fairly water tight (apart from the speakers) so moisture shouldn't be an issue there. Could it be a battery balancing thing - do affected riders balance their battery packs on 100% charge. The 21700 batteries are heavier compared to the 18650 batteries so are they more likely to move? Maybe worth asking if riders with fires do a lot of kerb jumping etc which might move the batteries. Also maybe worth checking the packs periodically for wear. Perhaps a video on what to look for (holes in the casing, water ingress, wires too close together, loose rubber cap on the charging port). Perhaps also worth looking at the pros and cons of leaving the EUC in a shed.

In my opinion, Euc are prone to vibrations which cause shorts in batteries. I think we would see this happen a lot less if battery producers used good quality bms, good quality batteries at the same voltage when put together, good welds with enough nickel, battery separators, and o-rings gaskets on positive sides on individual cells. Plus, a fuse between the battery and everything else would help a lot. I bet if these batteries are taken apart, a person who knows about batteries would see shortcuts made to safe money during battery production.

Hi Adam, It happened to me last year. I was on vacation traveling with my motorhome in France. I took my Inmotion V5F for a ride along the water's edge (La Somme) when I fell. I slid slowly into the water. My feet were in the water and so was the wheel. It probably stayed partially 5 minutes in the water but I was never able to get it to work again. I put it for 2 days vertically under the sun, hoping that the water will disappear. Bad hope. When I start to think about opening it, I put 5 minutes horizontally to check the position of the screws etc ... I left it 5 minutes to go to eat. 2 minutes later we start to smell a really bad smell in the air and went out to see the wheel smoking (fortunatelly not like in your video... No flame were seen). I think the cause may be either damage to the motherboard when it rolled into the water or the water make contact between the cables (I am not a specialist to define the cause). Anyway, everyone knows that any electronic device with batteries could have such a problem (from small devices to large devices). Now I put 2 smoke detectors in my CC (Lol) hoping that will reassure my wife or the next weel (V11) will never start to burn overnight or even while stored in my CC's "garage" . Take care of you. Pat

Missed the fire that burned down an apartment over the Christmas holidays. I think this is a lot more common just not as severe as these two instances. I have the daughterboard in RS that caught on fire myself, the verdict being water caused a short circuit but was lucky that was just a minor board fire and not a battery fire. It seems like these issues are easily solvable, we have numerous devices that are battery operated that don't suffer these incidents, I'm not sure why we just accepting these flaws as just an inherent risk when we purchase these wheels. This is ultimately how we got an outright ban on those balance boards right, because of the numerous fires they were caused due to poor choice of components and designs from China. I wonder if it’s the hollow motor and maybe creating static and heat.
@gpsanino3 жыл бұрын
I do not think so. The hollow-bore motor produces even lesser heat (friction). On many brand EUCs you will find cases of fried mainboard fried, but without resulting on these huge fires. Specially on Begode style of unicycles you will find that batteries, cables and totally exposed mainboard are all too close, with little insulation and thus, any circuit issue has a higher chance to ignite plastic and later the battery cells increasing the emergency. Insulation, encasing, better design and manufacturing standards are the issue. We still do not have a minimum safety standards for manufacturing these vehicles. Therefore is up to the "market" to select safety rather than speed. The hollow-bore engine is a huge advance introduced first by Inmotion since with it the cables with the highest current are no longer compressed into a small tunnel inside the axle.

Lithium is combustible when it gets in to contact with air. You just need 1 puncture on a cell, and this can happen. So the enclosure of the cell assembly in Gotway is really bad when you take in account what the use case is.

Wow... those battery explosions were horrific, you said that it could be a large pallet of problems that might ignite them, but it doesn't matter, batteries should be properly protected with serious casings, like the InMotion V11 and Z10, they took battery puncture and securing the wires, durability of the outer shell, and of the motherboard very seriously, with precise placing and a lot of real screws (not screws for wood), that prevent displacement while riding fast or on a tough terrain and cause short-circuits. Simple thin vacuumed foils of plastic can not protect a high voltage assembly of batteries from igniting... and also non-secured loose wires like on the Monster Pro and EX, poor casing engineering are vulnerable to overheating and also the outer elements, like cold and humidity... Puncturing a battery, or overheating the motherboard, or water coming in contact with wires that are supposed to be sealed are a recipe for disaster, it's like over-stressing or puncturing the fuel tank or engine of a rocket, it always results in fiery disaster... If I will replace my wheel in the future, it will not be a Monster Pro or an EX, no matter how many Wh/h or no matter the speed it can go to, safety is first!

has nothing todo with the cell type (at least if its an official GW Monster Pro and no chinese battery upgrade). This „runaway fire“ of lithium cells just can happen...its seldom, but possible. The used LG50 cells are totally fine.....

I'm pretty sure it's more about them doing the absolute least amount of work possible to get the wheel running fast and not exploding too often. That means omitting multiple safety measures in the electronics.
@ullle663 жыл бұрын
@@4nlimited3dition_4n3d There ARE the same safety measures as other producers have. Over/undervoltage, balancing, short circuit etc etc . These are all on the BMS they use. The only thing they dont have is a short circuit protection on the charge plug...which isnt the culprit for these burned wheels. Dont get me wrong...i am NOT protecting GW, they have a pretty lame quality control. But its hard to blame them for battery fires, these can occure with each and every Euc/Scooter/whatnot on the market. Its just that most riders are not aware this can happen.
@4nlimited3dition_4n3d3 жыл бұрын
@@ullle66 You are speaking as if GotWay wheels were even close in terms of safety or quality compared to for example Inmotion or Ninebot. That is not the case, at all. Firstly, the GotWay battery and control board compartments are not insulated at all. They are literally just bare and exposed under the thin plastic shell, which itself isn't even fully weatherproof on most of their models. Secondly, the workmanship on the component level, soldering, circuit design and such, is also absolute horror, especially for a vehicle that relies on the board functioning 24/7 to stay upright. Thirdly, their quality control is non-existent. One batch might randomly have 3 explody wheels while the second batch could be using different caps or fets and have lower performance and none of that is even listed anywhere.

I check my E scooters every day and always place my hand on the area where the battery is kept to check for temperature etc and leave it in my hallway for a few hours to cool down before I bring it inside my living room where I store it. As you say moisture, movement and heat can also cause circuit boards to burn or short causing a bigger problem.

great coverage here wrongway. you covered a lot of ideas here and im sure theres a lot to take away for each rider from this for their own safety. yeah, though it could be any number of causes, if they were already testing it prior for maximum limits without any problem, then my immediate thinking is that everything was fine. it seems he put the wheel in the trunk though, of a small car..where all the bumps and vibration happen. i think the problem was likely from inside the battery pack. maybe a cold solder joint came loose intermittently from the car vibration (which is a vibration/frequency that eucs dont achieve, even at 88kmh. so id ask ur friend what speed he was going from the first time he start to smell the fume until the explosion, to confirm. if they used any metal joints for the cells, and they spot welding it, those too could be susceptible to resonance at certain frequency/vibration. or for non welded metal connections, if its very cheap metal, then from those previous max. limit tests, the metal could have reached temperatures that it wasnt designed for, even if the battery cells themselves were fine. i dont expect these kinds of oversight..but just brainstorming.), also! keep an open mind on this one: if your friend had any car leaks for the rain or snow to drip through and get into some place into the wheel or any gasoline fumes/chemical fumes/exhaust fumes in that trunk area that could interact with the lithium cells... goodluck to ur friend and his car. thanks for covering this

EN: Isn't it that the BMS should lock the battery after a short circuit? The size of the cables should be appropriate to the current in this part of the circuit, i.e. a short circuit should disable the battery / burn the fuse, and not lead to heating the cables. If so, there is a failure before the BMS.
