In this episode I am diving into the world of gold mining in South Africa. I visit the area around the town Pilgrims Rest, which was declared a goldfield in 1873. Having worked in gold exploration myself, 10 years ago, I'm fascinated by the sheer volume of gold that they've managed to extract here over the years: a whopping 2 billion ounces of gold. And they are still mining here today - let's see if I can get close to the activities..

Pelgrimsrest was one of SA's earliest mining towns. Barberton, experienced a gold rush in 1880's, east of there is even older than Pelgrimsrest and is still active. The first stock exchange in SA was established there. The Witwatersrand (Johannesburg area) followed later along a ridge of gold bearing quartz with mines ranging from Johannesburg towards the south west for approximately 200km to places like Randfontein, Western Area, Carletonville, Stilfontein, Orkney..

It would kill the spirit of the show. They would not let her travel by herself, insurance would make them provide security. No company would go into business with her without some liable protection. There's a ton of travel shows that come with production crews. What makes this show unique is that she is really adventurous and traveling by herself. I also think that is the reason she does not have major sponsors.

Hi Noraly, you have been misinformed. BBEEE is an acronym for "Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment"... The idea behind it WAS honorable, unfortunately it did not turn out that way. In effect it means that mining companies have to GIVE AWAY part of their business to APPROVED BBBEE "partners" These "partners" DO NOTHING to earn the shares or help to operate the company effectively. This is How Ramaphosa, the current president of South Africa became a Billiionaire. Invariably, the "approved partners" must be politically connected ANC members, their friends and Family... The government officials also get kick backs and handouts for this....As a result the ANC bigwigs become extremely wealthy and the local people next to and working on the mines get NOTHING...

New Zealand also has old gold mining towns. Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island is one. They have a museum there with all the tools the miners used. You can see how they cleared the land for mining in areas like Nelson Creek too. You could cover NZ in a few weeks, some lovely scenery there and the food is fantastic. Maybe a thought for a later project. The Moari are really soemthing too. At the Rotorua Hotel, in Rotorua they have ( a while back) a hungi, a kind of feast where they do the beautiful dances with poi balls and harmonies. They cook the food in the ground, tastes delicious :) Sorry, getting carried away :)

Unfortunately the municipal roads all over the country are in a sad state. The provincial & national roads are in much better condition. The small country towns are quite literally falling apart. It's very sad to see. Corruption is endemic.

Noraly. Seeing you struggling in that mud and having difficulty turning the bike round made me remember being in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. In 1997, I had rented a BMW F650 rather incorrectly called "the Funduro", from a company near Vancouver, as my Sister lives nearby. I followed a trail higher and higher up the side of this mountain and started to go over the edge of some snow fields. The route go progressively steeper with about a 500m drop on the left and really big snowfield, so I stopped. Only then did I realise just how steep this trail was and now the trail was only 1m wide. Now this beamer is quite heavy, but I had to do a turn with the bike on it's back wheel and the front wheel almost vertical and swinging out over the edge and swing it round, to point it downhill. As you will know, going up on a slippery surface is a fair bit easier than coming down, but somehow I got back down. Pretty stupid thing to have done for a 46 year old Englishman, but hey, we're here to tell the tale, and at 70 next month, biking is still 'one' of my passions. I'm working through all your vids.. Fantastic.
