2 Buffalo Calves Try Fighting off Wild Dogs

A pack of wild dogs manages to catch 2 calves from a stampeding herd of buffaloes, and a battle for survival ensues. 😳
42-Year-old safari guide Sebastian Sakala witnessed this unbelievable moment in the Lower Zambezi National Park and shared the story with LatestSightings.com: Send in your wildlife video here and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
"We were on safari and spotted a pack of wild dogs hunting impala. Successfully having made a kill and they devoured their meal then they relaxed for a bit. They then set their eyes on a herd of buffalo, and the hunt was on again! They targeted a young calf, and as wild dogs do, started preying on their victim while it was still fighting for its life."
"The chase was amazing! Quite rare, as this was only my second in my career."
"This was only my second time witnessing wild dogs hunting buffaloes. The wild dogs had managed to kill 2 buffalo calves. They proceeded to kill one after another. It's becoming quite a habit for wild dogs to hunt buffalo nowadays."
"My advice would be to always give animals space - in this case, give the dogs their space to hunt."

I'd figure Buffalos don't kick with their hind legs since it requires way more effort to get like 400 lbs into the air instead of 200 to kick out, and that warthogs can only use their tusks if something's Infront of them or to the sides

On the warthog subject, they actually don't have a bad thing going. There is only one species that can "easily" kill adult warthogs single-handedly, which is the lion. Leopards need to be smart about it, while hyenas and wild dogs usually have to resort to team effort. Meanwhile every other predator leaves them alone. In the end adults are only bothered by 4 predators across their entire range, most of which prioritize other prey.

It takes human parents and elephants decades to protect the offspring to survive until adulthood. Maternal instincts affects all mammals, but IMO, it's much harder for humans to replace their children; and the same with apes and other animals with larger brains and considered, "intelligent," with human-like social groups. It's a lot easier to sacrifice themselves and let the kids survive with a relative rather than trying to survive with the emotional trauma.

African wild dogs are born with high intelligence including complex social intelligence, stamina, but one thing that it never possesses is capability to kill the prey quickly. The buffalo aren’t naturally equipped for the wild dogs tactics. They are used to dealing with lions. Lions don’t come in packs of 50, and don’t nip at their back legs the whole time. This combined with the buffalos poor eyesight means that in the end they just have to give up....

Wow, one of the most intelligent posts on here. You are 100% right, a wild dog does not stand a chance against a lion, but I also noticed that there are much better chasing and harassing buffalo then lions. The go for the calves mostly, since it's easier prey, but the ease that they manage to get a buffalo herd on the run is really something to behold.

For the Lions! For rangers, vets, safari shop owners, and the authorities that regulate Africa's wildlife: Due to the critical conservation situation that lions are in, there should be more forceful actions to avoid problems, and also to fix these problems. "Do not interfere"... Stupidity! If you don't interfere, they will increasingly decrease in the wild. There's no way not to interfere. How can there be any expectation of saving lions from extinction, when when they need it, no one can act because it was not a human cause? It's an absurd ambiguity! There's no way not to interfere! The chain effect is already doing more and more damage. It is necessary to stop these problems. And if the man (who has all the necessary resources) does not interfere, who will? Today is the time! Tomorrow is uncertain. We currently have technology, we know about genetics, reproduction, eating habits of various animals. We have the internet to spread the word and join forces, and volunteers always show up! More and more people are becoming aware of animal life. And what do some people who are closest to you do? Don't interfere... Joke! It's funny that these people make money from safaris, and it's precisely the lions that generate the most profits. And they don't interfere... When the last wild lion disappears, they'll be sorry they didn't interfere sooner. Interfering is HELPING! Does it cost to help? Is it wrong to help? It's primitive, stupid and unbelievable that thought. I hope they don't let the situation get worse so they can take action. If the situation got worse, obviously they would interfere. It would be the existence of the lions at stake. And why not act now, while it's reasonable? Is it necessary to wait for chaos? I hope those people "responsible" for these policies will have access to what I'm writing, and open their minds. Or that someone who knows them take my words to them.

@@blackswan8653, Are you against what I wrote? Everything is fine. It is normal to oppose something contrary to what we believe. However, you cannot deny it just because you are against it. It is necessary that you present SOLID arguments, which prove what you are arguing. Prove me wrong, and that doing nothing is better than interfering. You couldn't take the value out of my words. You didn't present any arguments of value, nothing that would show that what you believe, which is the opposite of what I wrote, works and is helping to save lions from extinction. You didn't. If what I wrote is wrong, and the attitudes that maintain the current situation are good, why are lions currently in the process of becoming extinct? The numbers favor my arguments. Watch without interfering. That's the solution. Acting is something that bothers a lot. Acting means taking action and taking responsibility. This is a nightmare for most people. They prefer a savior for everything, especially what is their responsibility. Maybe you have connections with rangers, vets, or are part of some entity that prefers not to act, instead of striving to make a difference, or you just can't see things from a different perspective, and you only attack what is contrary. what you believe. But remember that the current system (the one you defend) is not being effective in saving lions from extinction. The number of wild lions decreases every year. Maybe it doesn't matter to you, and deep down you only care about theories and models, animal life doesn't matter to you. If interfering saves, if interference is in favor of life, what's the problem? Is letting die better? For you it must be. There is no more time for clinging to theories. Strong actions are what saves. Shallow criticism devoid of foundation, do not add anything.

@@soueuarthur you are aware that lion populations in well protected parks like Kruger are stable or increasing across Southern Africa correct? The reason why their populations overall are decreasing in the wild is habitat destruction and poaching in less protected areas like West Africa. Randomly interfering in the lives of wild animals the way you’re describing shows a bias towards one animal at the expense of another when both are just trying to survive. Non interference promotes natural selection and ensures that the next generation of lions in this case is fit for life in the wild. Obviously, the exception to this is when an animal is threatened by man made circumstances like poaching-freeing an animal from a snare for instance and giving it medical attention if needed.
@soueuarthur
@soueuarthur Жыл бұрын
@@MrAtrox98, I didn't mention "random interference", let alone prioritizing one animal over "the detriment of others". It may be difficult to conceive of distinct methods when we are very used to a method repeated for a long time. Normal. Every new proposal is resisted. If you read everything I wrote, you must have seen that the interference I mentioned was "help". I did not incite to harm other species, to benefit the lions. Don't distort my words! Not helping, when it is possible to help and promote benefits to the species, is foolish. That's what I said! You did not understand. Now you will understand.
