One of the fastest ways to become a better shallow water bass fisherman is through mastery of casting mechanics. Jacob Wheeler gave Wired2Fish an excellent flipping and pitching tutorial in this video ( • How to Find and Catch ... ) and expands that lesson with 2 additional techniques: 1) the roll cast, and 2) pitch skip.
FEATURED PRODUCT:
-Storm 360 GT Searchbait Weedless Jig: wired2.fish/36...
-Storm 360 GT Searchbait Swim Bait Bodies: wired2.fish/36...
The purpose of both is to get baits into tight areas in and around cover -- think docks, flooded bushes, laydowns or any overhanging cover. Wheeler goes into detail on how to execute each with emphasis on the pitch skip, which allows you to skip baits in tight quarters deeper than any other technique. Whereas the roll cast uses wrist rotation, the pitch skip requires whole-body momentum and follow through to pull off.
Equipment is very important. Wheeler recommends rods in the 7-foot range and under when you're just getting started. He details how to calibrate your casting reel magnetic brake and tension dial for reduced backlashing, a key step when getting started.
Bottom line, both techniques excel at getting baits into exact spots in heavy cover with the pitch skip being best for hard-to-reach spots you couldn't otherwise reach. Couple this with a new style of lure ( • Why Skip Swimbaits for... ) and you're showing bass something they haven't seen which ultimately leads to a few more bites.

Skip casting is a must to get into big natives here in Australia. They are snag huggers and the more into the sticks you get your bait or lure, the bigger and more consistent the catches are. This was a great tuition video, and the shots of the baits skipping into cover were brilliant, thanks for the effort. Gotta say, after 30 years of using a baitcaster, jealous of your casting skill and how easy you make it look, lol.

The info on rod length is really important and I only heard it today. Trying to manage all that length, especially from a short distance, is a lot simpler. It’s big fish time here on the Harris chain in Florida so I’m getting out today and scout out open water, but the skipping method will get practiced a lot. Thanks!

@@frostizz2072 comes down to how you angle your rod as the skip cast goes as well as thumb control. I rarely bird nest, and when I do it usually isn't that bad because I have a specific rod and reel with specific settings for everything i.e plastics, buzz baits, frogs, etc. Keep in mind I use that combo to skip all of these

I’ve learned to pitch skip honestly before the “roll” for me in my kayak that pitch skip came more naturally and it is freakishly deadly... even if you don’t necessarily get the bait where you want it the skipping noise and sound will give em the extra attention you need sometimes.

It certainly will although this casting tactic was devised for tight quarters, accurate bait placement around heavy cover -- places where heavy line and casting equipment is needed. Skipping a bait appeals to bass in a lot of different environments, so if this casting style works for you with spinning gear, you'll be teaching the bass community something new!

Charles Fredrick many and I’m new to fishing . I only go for bass . I have a 13 Origin Tx with a Favorite Defenders 7ft rod and I’ll say it feels better , more accurate , cast further & my setup is soooooo featherweight I don’t even mind carrying it for hours if I wanted . Besides that I have Spinning setups all 6’6 i mainly throw senko just because I’m so thirsty to catch a fish . I have a kayak just haven’t used it yet . But to some this up lol I can type for days but yeah get a baitcaster . Get good string with it also

Charles Fredrick but keep a spinning rod or 2 with you . I feel as tho those are best for senkos but like I said I haven’t fished long or much actually but I caught a decent number and my PB is 3.7 & 3.2 lbs
@imonyoutube8801

Charles Fredrick also my spinning setups are cheap $50-$60 max combos . Basspro tourney rod ( I fish from a senko-whoppper plopper or frog in full pads ) , googan combo ( used a chatterbait once in it caught my 3.7 but I mainly use it for senko ) , I have a Lew’s American Hero combo but haven’t used that yet . But eventually I plan on throwing creature baits , jigs , chatterbaits , always senkos & maybe finesse worms ( that’s what I actually started off with curly u tail worms ) . Deff wanna get back into throwing the frogs , whopper ploppers but I wanna try throwing squarebill we that’s another reason why I switched to Baitcaster .
