Context for why he's getting booed. Back in 2017, the Astros won their first ever World Series(the championship for Major League Baseball). However, around late 2019, it came out that the Astros were cheating during the 2017 season. I won't get into how, since Im afraid youll get lost in the details. Since then, the Astros have became "Public Enemy number 1", with every interaction the team has under a microscope from the fans- in part because of the way the MLB handled this scandal. Yes, the Astros lost draft picks, and their managers were fired; but none of the star players(Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, George Springer) that benefited from the cheating were ever punished- unless you consider being booed 29/30 stadiums as punishment. Also, as of time of this comment, the Mariners are 28-24 and first place in their division.

The pace of the game doesn't insist you watch every moment. It allows you to talk about the game. To take it all in with your own pace. It allows you to wander and meander taking in the sights and sounds. Baseball is just as much about the experience at the park as it is about the game.

back in 1992, I had a similar situation …I had about 30 minutes to explain baseball to a Brit. I picked this guy up at Hotel Belair and drove him to LAX, (Los Angeles Airport). you see, I was a chauffeur and I had many opportunities to drive people with “means” to and from the local airports. anyway this Brit knew the ride was just under 30 minutes - and to please explain baseball to him. I had a great time and at the end of the ride he now had a BASIC understanding of the game. he thanked me for it and gave me a really nice tip. it was George Harrison.

This was fun to watch! I don’t see anyone answering all the questions you ask during the video, so here are my answers. 5:12 This is the “bullpen” where pitchers warm up. 5:41 The mascot’s name is just “Mariner Moose.” 9:50 The dirt is a specialized mix of sand, silt and clay. 12:40 The countdown timer is new this year. Baseball was getting worse and worse with pitchers and hitters faffing about between every pitch, so the clock was introduced. The batter is required to be ready for the pitch before there are 8 seconds left, and the pitcher is required to throw before time runs out. It has sped up the game considerably. 15:45 As you noticed, there is no set time for a baseball game. It’s just 9 innings. The longest professional baseball game ever was over 8 hours, but most are 2-3 hours long. 15:50 Yes, an inning will last until there are 3 outs. It doesn’t matter how many runs are scored. 17:40 Yes, a game is played until there is a winner. There are no ties, and extra innings are not sudden death. There will always be an equal chance for both teams. 17:50 The guy you noticed is the first base coach. There is also a 3rd base coach. Their function is to give runners any needed instructions, such as whether to steal or not, and whether to keep running or stop at a particular base. 18:40 People do move around. I go to a game to watch the game, but not everyone does, as you noticed. 20:30 I don’t know exactly what happened here, but this is a rather typical looking altercation between baseball teams. The Mariners and Astros have a bit of a rivalry, so I presume someone did something the other didn’t like. Once that starts, all teammates join in. It does all seem a bit silly when you look at it objectively. 21:00 If a runner advances because of a dropped pitch, it will be called a “passed ball” if it’s the catcher’s fault, or a “wild pitch” if it’s the pitcher’s fault. And it’s not stealing a base if there’s another reason you were able to run. 21:20 Julio Rodriguez is a very talented young player for the Mariners, and he is also quite charming, so he is very popular. 22:25 Everybody is booing because they don’t like the ruling. I presume it went against the Mariners. 25:25 “RF” means Right Field. Right and Left are from the batter’s perspective. You are sitting between center field and right field. 27:20 “AVG” is batting average - how many base hits divided by “at bats” (effectively attempts); “R” is runs scored; “H” is hits; “HR” is home runs; “RBI” is runs batted in (how many people scored because you hit the ball); “OBP” is on base percentage, it’s like batting average but includes things like walks that allow you to get on base without getting a hit; “SLG” is slugging percentage, it’s like batting average, but instead of all hits counting as 1, doubles are 2, triples are 3, and home runs are 4; “OPS” is the sum of OBP and SLG. One thing baseball fans love is statistics, and there are all sorts of statistics kept about baseball!

9:55...that is an infield mix. I'm a groundskeeper, so I know that MLB stadiums have a 60% sand, 30% clay and 10% silt infield mix. The sand helps with drainage and consistent particle size, the clay binds everything together and the silt retains a bit of moisture. They are watering down the infield mix to make it less dusty, more compact, and more consistent hops for ground balls. It's not muddy, more just firm so the ball bounces true rather than dying in a pile of dusty dirt or hitting a pebble and bouncing another way.

Former Little League second baseman (early 1970s) and lifelong baseball fan here… 🙂 I really enjoyed your wonderful video. Baseball is conceptually simple, but there are so many rules and nuances, that it ends up being one of the more complicated games to understand. Baseball is also perhaps the most statistics-heavy game in existence. These statistics are endlessly fascinating for many fans, allow pretty good (but not perfect) comparisons between players and eras, and thus permit old guys like me to participate in endless arguments about who was better than who, who was the greatest, etc. To answer the greatest player question, my answer is Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants (and, at the end of his career, New York Mets). Willie just passed away (June 18) at the age of 93. I was fortunate to see him play in person several times in the 1960s. To address your conversation at about the 16:30 mark - Baseball is an event-controlled game, meaning that the game ends when one or more events are completed. In this case, nine innings (typical) with one team in the lead. A tie score at the end of nine innings means that play continues with one or more extra innings until one team has a lead at the completion of an extra inning. Rain can prevent playing the full nine innings and, depending on the score and the number of innings played, there may or may not be a winner declared. Sometimes, the two teams will play two games against each other on the same day, which is called a double header. College double headers are sometimes seven innings per game instead of nine innings. Little League games are six innings. Softball, cricket, tennis, volleyball, track-and-field events, etc. are also examples of event-controlled games. Soccer, American football, basketball, etc. are time-controlled games, meaning that the games ends when time is exhausted. Some time-controlled games can end in a tie, while others have some method for tie-breaks. In event-controlled games, there is always the possibility that the person or team that is behind can win with a late surge. This is much more difficult to do in time-controlled games because the late surge can start too late. Finally, a subtle baseball joke that I came up with about 20 years ago: "Life is only 25% fair. The remaining 270° is foul territory."

The YT algorithm decided to bring this video to my attention. I live in Seattle and my wife and I are life-long Mariner fans. Seeing all of this we take for granted through your eyes is so much fun! I'm glad you got to visit our city and hope you had a great time! Some thoughts: The Astros are one of our biggest rivals, thus all the booing (especially Altuve). The attendance can seem lower than it really is because a lot of people go for the vibes and drinks; as you noticed, it's fairly popular for people to buy cheap tickets and then spend most of the game hanging out in the area where you started because it's close to the field, it's near the bullpen (where pitchers warm up), it's near good food and drinks, and it's just a very social area. Also, keep in mind there are 81 home games per season, so people with season tickets won't come to every single game. And even if they will, they may meet with friends and end up spending most of the game elsewhere in the stadium. Yes, a game could theoretically go forever if a team kept getting hits or homeruns or otherwise avoided getting a player out. The clocks counting down are relatively new to baseball -- until recent years, it was common for baseball games to go 3+ hours (and playoff games would go 4+ hours); now it's down to about 2.5 hours. Most people like the changes, but there's always a group of traditionalists who hate anything new.

It’s the guy with the stick and the guy throwing the ball against everyone else, right?” Close enough, dad. This description of the game was after he had lived in America for 50 years!!! Great video! I work across the street from T-Mobile Park. So we've been to our fair share of Mariners games. Yes, people will often get up and walk around during games. There is a lot of time spent in the concourses or waiting to get food or use the restroom. There are 81 home games a season and they're not all crucial games. So sometimes people just go for the atmosphere. Baseball is considered the "great American pastime". So it's a really popular night out during the summer. Traffic gets HORRENDOUS leaving the stadium. So sometimes people will bail out in the 7th inning or so if it's not the most exciting game. Glad you guys had fun, though!

When a catcher loses control of the ball and the runners advance, that's called a "pass ball," which cannot also count as a stolen base statistically. Same goes for a "wild pitch." Whereas a pass ball is a pitch that the catcher should have caught and controlled, a wild pitch is one that is deemed to not be reasonably catchable, so essentially the pitcher's fault rather than the catcher (as the name implies). Occasionally, if a pitcher is really struggling to control their pitches, you might see him throw a low ball into the ground at like 93 mph, causing it to bounce like 20 ft into the air, or a high ball over everyone's heads. That's always fun! LOL He might also hit the batter, which is a whole other thing in itself. That is officially called a "hit by pitch," or HBP in the stat books (no, not high blood pressure). The majority of these are not intentional and are caused by issues with pitch control, similar to pass balls and wild pitches. However, once in a while, when there's some spicy drama going on, a pitcher might intentionally hit a batter with a pitch. This typically causes bench-clearing confrontations like the one you saw, but often WAY more intense, like brawls. Just look up an intentionally hit batters compilation and you'll see what I mean.

It's culture, there's no explanation. In France, who picked how many times you do la bise (kiss on each cheek)? Some places it's 2, some 3 some 4 even. Why? No reason, it's just the custom.

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen with you guys. I am American and I know the complexities of understanding baseball. I tried to explain to a couple of French guys baseball and realized how difficult it is to understand the game. I have to say you did really good figuring things out. It was funny to see your confusion. It would be like learning Cricket for us. Really enjoy your videos, especially this one.

Each major league team plays 82 home games and 82 away games each year. Imagine the amount of money they earn from tickets, food, snd souvenir sales each year. That's why everything is so fancy and the players earn so much money. Baseball was my love many years ago. My nephew is a very good college player now.

This has got to be your best video ever. Next, come to Boston and attend a Red Sox game. Not only do you get to sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game, you get Sweet Caroline as well. And you’ll see the big difference between East Coast baseball fans vs West Coast. Here, we actually show up on time and watch the game. And to answer at least one of your questions, stand venders will throw you a bag of peanuts, often quite theatrically. But if you order something like a hot dog it gets passed down.

It was fun to experience a baseball game with someone who hasn't experienced the sport. Baseball you will see shirts for contemporary players. Like you mentioned, Rodriguez is a young star for the Mariners. You will also see shirts for classic team players. You probably saw some Johnson shirts for Randy Johnson, who is an all time great in baseball. What is fun is we like to look for the most obscure jersey. A player that isn't a star but may be a fan favorite. A shirt you wouldn't expect anyone to have with that name. Some of the more historical teams, New York Yankees or St. Louis Cardinals you see a LOT of historical jerseys and players. Baseball had no clock. An average game is usually around 2 hours but they can go on. Historically there have some big outliers. The longest MLB game went 26, almost 3 full games, and lasted over 4 hours. I went to a game last year in Colorado. They played the Anaheim Angels. The Angels scored over 20 runs. There were a lot of home runs, where the ball is hit over the fence. In short baseball is: 9 innings unless the game is tied, then it goes into extra innings until someone outscores the other. If the visitors score the home team still gets their last at bat. Each team gets 3 outs per inning. If they score 200 runs and no one is out it keeps hitting until 3 out are made. There is a 'strike zone' for the batter from the shoulders down to the knees. The is also a right and left line to for a box. If a pitcher can get 3 pitches in the box or a combination of the batter swinging and missing at a pitch anywhere or hitting the ball out of play the batter is out. The only thing is the 3rd 'strike' has to be in the box or a swing and miss for the batter to be called out. There are some exceptions, like interfering with the catcher. BA- Batting Average - The total number of hits, divided by the total number of at bats. RBI - Runs Batted In - This is the number of runners on base that the batter has driven in over the course of the season. SLG - Slugging - This is the batters power percentage. It is a formula that tabulates the total batter at bats compared to how many bases. Example: If a batter had one at bat on the season and hit a home run, their slugging percentage would be 4,000. OBP - On base percentage - It is a formula that tells you the frequency of the batter getting on base. It is total hits, plus total number of times the batter was walked divided by the total number of plate appearances. A walk doesn't count as an at bat. Example: First game of the season. With 4 plate appearances, I hit a single, strike out my other two appearances and walk in my fourth appearance. My batting average is .333, 1 for 3. My OBP is .500 because I was 2 for 4 because of the walk. My SLG is .333 because i only hit a single. If I had hit a double it would be .667 because it would have been 2 bases for 3 at bats opposed to 1 base for 3 at bats

We did this on our first cruise trip. We were cruising out of New York so we had a week in the city beforehand. I knew a little about baseball from early Channel 5 coverage. Once I knew we were going to New York I checked out the Yankees schedule and bought tickets on line for a game against the Red Sox (Sept 5th 2013), picked the tickets up at the stadium. We loved it, loved the whole atmosphere, the stadium, the game. We've cruised in and out of New York another three times since and have been lucky enough to see the Yankees each time, taking other members of the family. We are confirmed Yankees fans. If you get the chance to go watch a game I would recommend it. It's a great day or night.

I went to a game at the beginning of their first season ever at the long gone Kingdome. (Just a couple years ago...ha!.) I wish I could've been there next to you to answer all your questions!! One thing I will say, especially for T-Mobile Park, there are so many fan experiences throughout the stadium that you'll regularly see a third of the seats empty because people hang out in the standing areas like "The Pen" or the "Trident Deck" or they'll be in line at one of the concession stands or browsing down in the team store which is massive.
