Man. This his is inspiring. I too have to have a disc replacement in the exact same levels C/4-C/5 & C5/C-6 and my doc was saying that my 6-7 might need to be fused. What’s interesting is my neck seems to be similar to yours as the curve is backwards. I hope you are doing better and hope that my surgery goes as well as yours! Best of luck!

I appreciate you posting these videos! I found out in September that I have a herniated disc at c5-6 and would possibly need surgery. I also have a condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension, so I’ve been having “headaches” for years that haven’t gotten much better after my lumbar shunt surgery. In January, my pain was so bad that I couldn’t cough, laugh, sneeze, anything without my head feeling like it was going to explode. My neurosurgeon says the disc is what’s causing this pain so I’m having a disc replacement and a possible fusion on Feb 24. I’m only 26 so I’m terrified, but watching what you have gone thru is really easing my mind! Prayers for continued healing 🙏🏽

Thank you for posting this. I've had two fusion on my lower back (L4-S1) and two months ago, out of nowhere I started getting really REALLY bad neck pain that quickly moved down to my shoulder blade in the following week. Within 2 weeks of that I had pain down my right arm and a week after that my forearm feels like I have a constant sunburn, my ring and pinky finger, mostly pinky, are numb/weak and my arm/hand go completely tingling randomly throughout the day like I've been laying on it. My family doctor did an MRI this past Monday, called me Tuesday and said my C6/C7 were "Significantly Bulging". Already had an appointment a month out with my neurosurgeon for a follow-up on my back, they got the MRI forwarded today, called me and moved my appointment up to next Friday soooo, I'm not super optimistic about not getting cut open again in the near future. What's really crap, I've been off work since last July from my lower back so I have literally done nothing and yet have two bulging discs. Joy oh joy. I really hope the neck is easier than the lower back.

I had this same surgery Oct 1st 2020, I had 3 herniated discs at C5 C6 C7, and they put that plate in with 4 screws. I don’t feel that burning on the left side of my neck anymore. But my right shoulders have been really really sore. Before the surgery they didn’t hurt. I keep wondering why they are hurting. But Dr Gee told me to take the bandage off my neck and I could get the spot wet, still no driving. And he wants me to continue to wear this awful brace everywhere and to bed....😩😩😩

Had fusion to C6 and C7 and have full mobement and never been better its been 4-5yrs since Op and still active as ever. The worse is the Post Op wake up from the incision in throat until them sorting correct amount of pain relief. 4 to 6 weeks recovery/take it easy time mostly precautionary but good as new. Be surprised how C6 and C7 effect the nerves which effect the feeling in random parts of the body!

I've followed you with you ADR surgery because I had the same surgery with same disks. I also have a herniation at C 6/7 not fixed. MAY, 2ND was one year post op for me. Well I'm having some issues again and they think it's a tendon but my surgeon only did an xray. Did you have to have a special test for your neck after this surgery for more detail?? Because he says they can't do an MRI and I need help. Anyway so I went to an Orthopaedic and I do have tendon issues with my shoulder. I fell 6 months out of surgery. I did have an injection in my right shoulder and I'm much better now so hopefully that's the issue but there is still a lingering neck pain. Ugh. Someone said if you have one surgery you are doomed for another. I hope that's not the case.. Anyway how does ACDF compare to ADR surgery pain wise?

I had a 3 level cervical spine fusion a year ago today. C3-C6. About 3 months ago, I started having the same exact pain you described here. Terrible pain across my shoulders and weakness/numbness down my whole right arm. An MRI showed problems at C7 that coincides with fresh nerve damage at C7 discovered in a NCT of my right arm. Yesterday, I scheduled a C7 fusion with my neurosurgeon for 11/03/2020. I'd love to hear from you in regards to how you're doing now..... My last surgery was a big one (3 levels) and it was a really rough recovery! I had trouble swallowing for nearly 12 weeks. I dropped 33 pounds in those 12 weeks. It took a long time for me to be able to eat solid food again. I had more pain from having my throat cut than I did from the actual spine surgery itself. I guess my question is...was it easier round 2? Was your surgeon able to use the same incision as before? And how are you feeling in general? Did your pain stop? Did the arm weakness and numbness go away? I'm having true anxiety over this, I didn't expect to have to go through this again....at least not just a year later! I hope you're doing much better now and if you can offer me any advice on things that you had to learn on your own after surgery that perhaps wasn't told to or discussed with you beforehand? I hope I'm making the right decision by going through with this surgery!

Hi Bambi, I hope you are doing Ok. I will say that my second surgery was an easier recovery than my first. I think there is a big difference between multi level and 1 level. For one, the surgery shouldn’t take as long so they won’t be in there “messing around” as much. I think a lot has to do with surgeon skill and your anatomy. So it’s subjective. My dr. Was not able to use the same incision because the levels were too far apart. I’ve actually done a few follow up videos on my second surgery that might answer your questions. I totally understand the anxiety, it sucks. But know that since you got through such a big surgery before, you’ll probably do well again. My second surgery did improve my numbness/ pain/ weakness. But just the nature of the “correction”. There’s still that risk of adjacent level degeneration. I wish you all the best! Let me know how you’re doing!

Yes, my numbness did eventually go away, it was a very gradual process. I can't pinpoint an exact time. I even still get numbness very easily like when leaning on my arms or when sleeping, but it goes away. Could be positioning, or residual, but it comes on much more quickly than before. But on a day to day basis, it is gone. I honestly don't remember when I could say it was all the way gone, but I had significant improvement initially, and then it took another month or two-ish to fully resolve.

@@danoneall4013 Hi Dan, thanks for asking it went exceptionally well. I am no constant nerve pain now, just occasional numbness if I sit or lay or move in a certain position. The doctor said that is quite normal as the nerves need to bounce back more. It's till very early in the process but I feel 99% better than before. I got three titanium spacers with a couple of screws each. Pretty minimal. No cage and plates. I asked the doc about that and he said that is "older technology." You may want to ask your doc. It may be perfectly suited for you given your particular condition but in my case he said he did not need to do that. The first week is really rough and the second not great either but then it gets much better. I had no swallowing issues and no sore throat. Could have been that the less invasive spacers and also the fact I told the anesthesiologist that I was a singer. He was like I am glad you mentioned that I will use a tube that exerts less pressure. That seemed to help. Anyway, best of luck man it will be alright. God speed you will do fine. Think positive and let me know how it turns out.

How much Ibuprofen and were was numbness. I might have a c6 and c7 compression
@Adriennewithane
@Adriennewithane 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t take too much ibuprofen. Maybe a few pills a day. I have a low threshold for meds, so it doesn’t take much to affect me. As far as numbness, google a Myotome/ dermatome chart and it will help you associate your numbness or weakness with a spinal level if that’s really the case.

I am having my C6C7 fused on Wednesday 2.24.2021 and want to know if the numbness and tingling in my arm and hands will go away immediately after surgery. What other advice do you have for me?
@Adriennewithane
@Adriennewithane 3 жыл бұрын
My numbness was immediately improved. I think it depends on how long you’ve been having trouble. My best advice is to really really take it easy... you may feel really good in a week, but you need to give it a while before you’re trying to do anything besides daily self care tasks like showers etc. no cleaning, walking heavy dogs that can pull you, repetitive tasks like folding laundry are just as bad as heavy lifting. Have people around to help you, and let them. Good luck! Do your best to relax in the next few days. Trust that you’re in the best possible hands. It’s a common surgery even though we feel like it’s insane...

Hi, Just want to know In which hospital you did surgery and what cost come? I belongs from india, suggest best hospital for surgery

Hi, I am in the United States, so I'm not sure the best place to recommend for you. I found a good surgeon, and went to the hospital he was affiliated with. It was a spine hospital specifically. The cost was very high, but after insurance, we still had to pay several thousand dollars for the surgeon, the hospital, the supplies and the implant, as well as anethesia and nursing etc. It's very expensive, but luckily insurance helps. I wish you the best.

I had acdf on c6-c7 a week ago. My issues were on the right side. I didn’t have many symptoms because mine extruded so badly it moved downward so I felt the pain from the c8 nerve root. Now I’m having c6c7 symptoms on my left! They say it’s normal. Did you have any issues like this? I don’t know how I could have new c6-c7 symptom on the other side if he took it out Just curious what kind of aches and pains you had
@Adriennewithane
@Adriennewithane 3 жыл бұрын
Diana G. I would say I have heard from others that it can get worse before it gets better. As that nerve “wakes up”. Hard to say. I didn’t have worsening of symptoms at the same level, but after my 2 level disc replacement in 2018 I started having early symptoms at 6-7 which is where I eventually had this most recent fusion. I do remember after a few weeks worrying that I am not getting better... but it did. I joined a few Acdf and disc replacement groups on fb and many people spoke of the roller coaster recovery. It takes time. Best wishes!

Nope. I got a soft one for comfort which I used when riding in the car (as a passenger) to soften the bumps. My surgeon said for disc replacement you want to maintain movement, not restrict it.

I had 3 levels fused c4-7 (10-26/20). I am having lots of shoulder pain and discomfort. Just wondering if this is going to dissipate and go away. I am so irritated that it disrupts my day like this. Physical therapy doesn’t do anything for this. He didn’t seem to be to worried about it. Any thoughts? Thanks for the video.

I know that can be so frustrating. I too have felt that shoulder blade pain. I think that is a common complaint. I wish I had better advice. If it doesn't go away I would say after 6-8 months, or gets worse, it's worth another talk with your doctor. Hopefully you're having follow up appointments and can mention this. Having 3 levels fused at once is a big surgery. It may take some time.

Check NIPH for shoulder pain after C6-c7 fusion. They say you will always have it. Then talk to a Pain management MD about getting a NEVRO spinal cord stimulator inplanted. Better than hurting forever.

Sorry you have to do this too. I if you look into the research, there is a chance of other segments of the spine degenerating due to the stress on them since one segment doesn’t move. Look up adjacent segment disease. In my case my third level was already bad/ building before surgery and it just wasn’t bad enough to fix originally. There’s no guarantee it will go bad, but over time, it can happen. Less likely with a disc replacement with artificial disc than with fusion, but not everyone can have disc replacement.

How did you find a spine surgeon to do your operation. You seem quite cheerful. Hope I am close to the same. Also, since the surgery is in the upper part of your body, is their any problem of doing your normal thing in going to the bathroom. Obviously, I am a newbee about all of this. Hope my question and your answer will help us neophytes on this subject.

If you check out my first video I talk about having consultations with 4 different surgeons before picking the one I wanted to use: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMeYrdCcur7RqGg.html I got many opinions and weighed my options. As far as hygiene, I did not have any real issues. Movement in general can be difficult right after surgery, so washing my face, (bending over the sink) or washing my hair (arms over head) were hard for the first week or so. I did not have any bowel and bladder issues, but when something is pushing on your spinal cord, or a lumbar spine area, that can be a real concern.

Sorry to bother you. Just saw your video. I will be staying inpatient for one night for a C5-6 FUSION CERVICAL ANTERIOR LEVEL 1 procedure. How will I do at home by myself pain wise? My procedure is on Wednesday this week of May 2023. Any response might be helpful. I'm nervous.....
@Adriennewithane
@Adriennewithane Жыл бұрын
It's not a bother. I think pain is really subjective and dependent on a lot of factors. My single level procedure was a very easy recover. My first surgery was 2 levels and quite a bit more painful and I needed someone with me for the first 2 days at least to help me roll out of bed, get my shirt over my head etc. I was very stiff, not just painful. If you can have some help try to get some for at least the first week. I had lifting restrictions of no more than a gallon of milk. No housework etc, very limited "work" for your arms. My head was "heavy" for the first few days too, I had to use my hands to help brace and lift my head from a reclined or lying down position so I didn't strain my neck. But everyone is different pain wise. I didn't have as much pain as I had stiffness and some soreness. If you take it easy, it will heal better, don't force it. I wish you all the best for a skilled surgery and a speedy recovery!

@@anonnymous2198 agreed. If you’ve got the anatomy for it and if your surgeon is experienced, disc replacement is the way to go. I have 2 disc replacements and 1 fusion.

Very much general anesthesia + intubation. It is major surgery. In fact, I think I was immobilized/ strapped down so that I didn’t move/ flinch while they’re in there so close to such vital nerves and blood supply.
