My 2 day, 1 night backpacking trip in the White Mountains, NH! This trip included 3 4,000 footers on Franconia Ridge (Liberty, Lincoln & Lafayette) as well as Lonesome Lake & The Basin. There were so many amazing views on this scenic hike.

Great commentary. I’m a solo female hiker/backpacker. You are always learning. But there is no shame in calling a trip short when you’re not feeling it. I think sometimes it’s just the universe sending us a message and we’re smart for listening.

You are right about knowing when to put the plug on a hike. I did a vlog on it last year. As the saying goes, the mountain will always be there. A few years ago, I attempted a late Spring hike up to Mt. Lafayette and turned around with about .1 of a mile to the summit. The wind was whipping, it had gotten really cold and I was cramping really bad. I figured that I could do it some time in the future and I had already done when I was working on my 48 which I finished 5 years ago.

Lafayette Place is such a great basecamp for that area! Showers and laundry and a few steps from many access points to the AT. Campsite 22 has a great view of Mt. Lincoln! Thank you for sharing this with us!

Solo hikes are so different. The logistics getting to the trail and then back to your car are challenging. I had planned a week long outing and ended up cutting it on day 2! Took what I learned and went back out for 4 days just a few weeks later. Always learning! Also I love the Basin! My wife and I stopped at your store last summer, we had come from the Basin and Mt Washington earlier that day!

No 2 Pencil (Russ aka "The Heard Hiker") mentions you often on his channel during his current AT hike so I had to finally check out your videos. I'm glad I did. This particular loop looks fantastic. Franconia ridge has been one of my top bucket list items for hiking and photography ever since I found out about it so this video has been hugely helpful. I already own the book you referred to that contains most of the hile so it's time to dive into that and make some notes. Thanks for posting.

Hello Taylor. I was up in Franconia Notch from 5/30/22 to 6/3/22. It was my first visit to the whites. The landscape is absolutely stunning. Traveled the Kancamagus Highway. Went to Conway and up to the summit of Mt. Washington on the Cog Railway. Best trip of my life.

I am in new hampshire and doing my first ever backpacking trip soon, and will be doing it solo as well and planning a sorta similar route, although I am planning to stay at liberty springs. I am hoping now that summer is basically here that the temperatures will be better and more people camping there (and the caretaker onsite) so I'm hoping that will help me not bail, but its nice to see your perspective on it and the things that you struggled with and needed to change!

I think you missed Kinsman Falls on the way down Cascade Brook. Its also a great swimming hole in the summer on a hot day!

We were just up there last week. The summits are covered in snow and Lonesome Lake was 90% frozen, but, damn those Chipmonks were tha fattest ones I have ever scene. They enjoyed a very good winter.

Just went across Franconia Ridge two weeks ago and they were resupplying GreenLeaf Hut (via helicopter) which was very cool to see! Amazing 360 degree views. Your Timelapse walk across the ridge was artsy 🎥

I appreciate the video because I have been planning a visit there for months and have a spot reserved at that campsite and do the ridge first thing the next morning. I normally backpack alone and camp miles from others but will experience a totally different environment staying in a few huts to simplify things

For what it’s worth, down here in Virginia, one of my favorite campgrounds to bring my kids is at Sky Meadows State Park… it’s a 1 mile hike-in primitive campground. You park, hike in, tent camp, have fun… you get all the benefits of backcountry camping, except you’re in a state park campground. Short hike, Filter water, make a fire, etc… At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. As long as you’re happy doing what you’re doing, no explanation or justification is required! Also, you are familiar with this park… you walked through it on your AT hike!

I never thought about how you are used to backpacking around people. I am used to the opposite. Always solo, mostly isolated. One 5 day 85 mile trip here in PA last year, I saw 5 people in 5 days. One other backpacker, a couple on a rail trail section and two hunters, who startled me in morning. One winter AT trip in PA, it was three people in three days. One in the final mile, a trail runner and a guy with construction equipment. It definitely is weird when you set up camp at like 5 PM and no one walks by the trail the entire time that you are their, through the next morning.

Buy the free standing kit for your Duplex and it is a win win. Always bring your Advil with you. I keep Tylenol in a small Nalgene container from REI. John from MI

I hurt already. Liberty Springs makes me want to cry. My knees are screaming and I am not even on the trail. When I did Liberty for the 2021 Flags on the 48, I was the last one of the group to the summit, which was fine. The best part of the day was when I got there one guy in the group packed up a 12 pack of beer, another had a flask of whiskey and another had brought up a grill and was grilling beef and chicken.

Love the video Taylor. Think maybe your are kinda nervous about being alone in the wilderness. It is a natural reaction. Besides animal's you have the two legged predator's to worry about. If you have safety precautions with you and you are comfortable and confident with them you will be fine. I am 74 and still get concerned in the wilderness at times. If something doesn't feel right listen to your gut and change your plan, like you did. I do not know what your survival skills are but you should trust them and your judgement. These side trips are very different from what you and Cody did last year. I don't know anything about Chet but he must be a wonderful man, and I and a lot of other viewers thank him for sharing you with all of us. I have said this before I sure miss you and Cody on trail this year, no one out there this year does it like you two did. Hope to see many more trips from you and maybe Cody in the future. Awesome video! I stayed at Lafayette Place a few nights ago, but did some smaller hikes in Crawford and Dixville Notch instead, until I feel ready for Hi-Cannon and eventually Lincoln and Lafayette. I was planning on doing the loop from Lincoln but going to Liberty via the AT looks awesome too! How long did it take you to hike the entire ridge and get back down? The string lights were super cool too! wesome video! Liked your AT videos and appreciate following your NH hikes. I have gotten killer headaches after hiking above treeline in the Whites. I think that they were caused by air pollution. The air quality can be awful sometimes and we've been having forest fires lately. Ibuprofen works best for those pesky air pollution headaches.

Always enjoy seeing my local hiking spots even though I'm from Massachusetts. Amazing trails in NH on the Appalachian Trail but I warn folks to be careful and make sure your prepaid and pack well so have plenty of food and water for at least 2 days in the event something should happen. People get hurt on the trail DAILY by slipping and breaking legs, arms, whatever..

Fun video, Taylor! I want to plan a trip to the Whites this summer to do some hiking/backpacking. I'm curious as to how muddy your trails get after rain. Hiking is muddy, of course, but my neck of the woods can turn nto pure sludge for 72 hours+ after, even with only light to moderate rain. As you can imagine, it's one hell of a speed suck yanking each foot out of 6 inches of heavy mud and even goretex shoes and gaiters eventually relent 🤣 I want to plan for the appropriate amount of extra socks to have available for my pack and temper my distance expectations accordingly. I know you can't provide any guarantees, but your videos seem to present trails that might have some standing water but not so much of the sludge. Is that an accurate assessment after the spring (mud) season? I know southern exposures tend to dry a little faster but wanted to get the thoughts of someone who likes the whites all four seasons. I don't want to over pack but don't want to be unpreprared either. 😉

Love that campground! trying to decide on a tent, what do you think of the big Agnes copper spur 2 vs the big Agnes scout platinum I wonder; also your advice does help! I turned back on the one hike did knowing was best to do bc socks were wet and it was cold, and ran through water faster then thought would ,along with the clouds. so using that for next trip to plan. I also lost something on that abandoned trip in a different waterfall lol my vaccine card that I had with me for no good reason, was in a waterproof pelican case clipped to my bag and the case popped open and it fell out with my Anker battery which I found and still works

I started at the liberty springs trailhead and followed the trail up franconia ridge, down past the hut, into the campground and hiked past lonesome lake and the basin in the morning. The AMC has some nice maps that you could use to follow that route

Plot twist: the pole you recovered was someone else's that did the same thing! You have amazing hair. And before you think that is a weird comment realize that your viewers almost never see it anywhere but hidden by your Survivor bandana (or whatever that is called.) Whether that was how you woke up or your spent time laying it out next to you, I think you could do some shampoo advertising.
