We gave a pair of designers with very different styles one day to transform the same IKEA Billy bookcase, turning one of the most popular furniture items in the world into something more personalized and expressive. Drew Scott of Lone Fox is a DIY dynamo who emphasizes attainability with an eclectic twist, while furniture designer Leonard Bessemer of Objects for Objects approaches his work through a lens of sculpture and indulgence. Whose IKEA hack would fit most comfortably in your home?

@ It's a nice idea, but I think the pole wrap won't work that way. You need another material for that.
@gnarbeljo8980
@gnarbeljo8980 2 жыл бұрын
@ it would totally work only one would have to construct rounded doorframes to cover with pole wrap and add hinges and a hidden clasp. The problem with that being it would be difficult to open them standing flush against a wall. The roll top desk style opening requires a whole different framing and hardware on the back of the shelf so it has somewhere to slide, I'm not familiar with pole wrap so not sure the material is suited for it. Loose oak slats with cable run through at the ends may work better. Definately a more expensive build.

Drew’s is the winner for me. His looks like the type of furniture you find on those high end furniture sites for $4000. Like Kim Kardashian’s and Kanye west’s house type style. So versatile.

Love them both, it just depends on whatever works in your space. That said, Leonards is my favorite for two reasons, it almost looks like it is in motion, he added strength to the connectors (I have lots of heavy books:) and he replaced the back by using one solid piece of masonite instead of foldable ~cardboard~. Since I am not afraid of color - Leonard's piece would match my walls... I love how their personalities reflect in their work. They both produced stunning pieces. I've always been a fan of Drew and I have watched him on his channel (Lone Fox) for a few years now. It's incredible how far he has come, and he deserves every bit of success. Drew's aesthetic is more of my style but both pieces are works of art. ✌️

First of all I love them both??? They're so sweet and chill. Second, awesome results! Leonard made a very like statement piece, bright, bold, shiny, and Drew made something that's more neutral but with personality. Ugh, love both styles.

I LOVED this!!!!! Seriously. Best of all was the end part/reveal where each designer gets to see the other's project and they were so lovely with each other! THAT was heart warming (I am sick to death of stupidly competitive behaviour). This was wonderful!

Thanks to Drew for the tip about pole wrap, and to Leonard for the info about that use for shellac! Honestly, these are both wonderful, so it would depend on which room I needed the shelf for. Leonard's would work in my music room, and Drew's design would look great in the current living room.

I came from Drew's channel and expected nothing but awesomeness and he delivered! But I also like how fun and unique Leonard's piece turned out! It's like they feed into two different aspects of my personalities: one a sophisticated adult who wants a calming space and the other one a fun loving kid who wants all the great colors in the world. So much talent, both of them!

They're both so beautiful, would love something like this as a series with varied designers! I love that they're both appreciative of each others work, no need to compete, and how each described the process accessibly to the viewers (so jealous of Leonard's workshop) so that they can potentially achieve something similar if they wanted to at home.

I love the style and look of Drew's piece! Such a cool texture, and the classic color would fit in any home. I do wish you could open the sides though--if they could open and close magnetically, they'd make some great additional shelf storage. Leonard's piece is so fun and vibrant! A very risky choice to paint it a flat orange, but then it looks so classy after he styles it. It's walking a fine line between kid's playroom and eclectic, quirky adult. It could be quite the versatile piece! This was so fun to watch!!

Beautiful and inspirational job done by two completely unique and opposite designers! I love the outcome of both of these projects due to the fact that neither one of them look like anything to do with a standard slat box IKEA shelf. I think both of them turned out to be unique and exquisite pieces. And both designers deserve to have a big round of applause. I was impressed with what Drew could do due to him having smellement tools and the other gentleman having an entire workshop. I also found that there's peace was very of the moment and would be extremely sought after in the market today. Love to show love to see it again 💯❤️❣️

I do love both - but - following the Amazon link for the pipe wrap Drew used and doing a little calculation, that much pipe wrap alone from that Amazon site would cost over $800 (five pieces at $167 each). Add tax, the cost of the bookcase itself and the cost of the paint, it will be over $1,000.00 total for materials . . . Soooo, the project would be good for some folks who have a lot of money, a lot of skill, a lot of time, who really love both the look and the process. I really like the look and the process seems fun, but if/when I have $1,000 budgeted for a bookcase, I'll more likely go with a fine antique or hire a cabinet maker to make something out of solid hardwood. No shade - it is a nice piece.

You can find it MUCH cheaper elsewhere. Home Depot has it in different sizes from around $70 or so which means you can buy only as much as you need.
@lsamoa
@lsamoa 2 жыл бұрын
@@morgancrossley6166 That still adds up to about 500 bucks in materials alone. Not realistic. Of course Leonard's project will cost money too but browsing through the comments it seems that a lot of people preferred Drew's bookcase because it looke more attainable for them to replicate. But with the additional costs, is it really that attainable? Might as well get something of higher quality made by a real designer.

OMG!!! I love both of these. I love how both of them shared their design and reconstruction steps, including useful tips. I generally love Drew's projects. This one is certainly not an exception to that. The lines, and texture the wrapping material added are awesome. I also appreciated how he decided to change the overall shape of it. But Leonard's unit is so incredible. I love how he shared tips on how to deal with a material that can be a bit difficult. How he explained that some steps were adding structural value as well as contributing to his design ideas.

Wow...both shelfs are just beautiful. I sometimes DIY a little bit by myself (whenever it's necessary again to come up with a storage idea in my 2-room 41sqm. apartment) but in none of my dreams I would have such an idea. Both of them did just great though I prefer Drew's, because I like the clean-line design and the discreet color. I'm a huge Bauhaus fan and Drew's idea comes close to this concept.
