Review of Astro rivnut tool and my little home made tool that does the same thing... better. I'm sure there are even better solutions, and I encourage anyone with a better design to leave details in the comments. No ego here, just trying to help out.

Dont drill the hole too big using a home made tool. With the pneumatic tool, its actually pressing the splines of the rivnut into the metal to help keep it from spinning when tightening a fastener, along with the crimping from underneath. A home made tool wont give the bite into the metal like a pneumatic tool will.

Nathan, I followed your method to the T, and was able to install a rivet nut on my Mustang perfectly using hardware I had in the garage. No impact needed, just did everything by hand and the rivet nut is solid. You helped me out, thanks!!

After going through the pain of having the rivnut spin inside the hold during install, I resorted to tack welding the head to the sheet metal, then I found this video and finished a dozen of them in the time it took me to finish one before. You sir are a lifesaver. Drilling the nut oversize was brilliant.

I have been looking for a way to do this, and I just could not bring myself to buy a single purpose tool that cost that much, even the lower cost non-powered versions. Opening up the ID on a nut made to go on that bolt, and then using it on an old wrench of that same size was genius! The only enhancement that I would suggest would be a small thrust washer on the top of the setup to relieve the induced rotating stress as the rivnut cinches up. Thanks for posting the video.

Perhaps adding a threaded nut would help. you hold the bolt steady using a wrench. then apply torque on the threaded nut to "pull" the bolt upwards and against the rivet head. in that way, the bolt does not turn while trying to compress the rivet

Hi Nathan, I've been using thread-locker liquids for years. The medium is my go-to, but on rivet nuts, I use a drop of the permanent type. Not only does it prevent spinout, but it also helps with corrosion between the nut & frame. Really like your solution.

I don't think I would ever trust a rivnut on a suspension bolt, they make flanged nuts, I would drill the hole out and weld one into the hole before I would trust a rivnut. I like them for attaching sheet metal and non stressed parts tho.

Hi Nathan, I have the same tool with the same problem.......This is what I found out. My rivnut stud was not pulling it down all the way. Well, to fix the problem on you air tool............If you remove the bottom (it is screwed on and hard to get off) off the tool, I think a 24mm socket will do it. After you get the bottom plate off you will see a piston with a rod attached. Pull it out (it should be lubed with O-ring) once you get the rod out add some hydraulic fluid down the LITTLE ROD HOLE , you do not need much. If your is low on fluid it will not pull the rivnut up tight. I add hydraulic fluid to mine and now it work correctly. I was having problem form the first time I got the tool. I hope this helps, please let me know if it work for you?

Well, i just got back from the Hardware store and tried this technique with a 3/8 rivnut and 0.120" aluminum. The hole was tight as I had to drive the rivnut in with a hammer and it still spun. The rivnut spun and Ii had to use a pair of pliers to hold the rivnut till it bulged. i don't know what thickness material the OP is using or he is only using a pneumatic wrench, but this did not work.

This is fuckin genius. Duno if you have to with the air tool, but with the hand tool you have to manually extract. With this, you just slam the impact into reverse and you're good to go. McMaster has a 'friction torque limiter/sprocket' that might be worth investigating in place of the bearing. I think I remember seeing in some catalog 'one way slip bearings' or something that might serve the same purpose. And on milling machines, there are auto-tappers you chuck into a standard R8 collet right before the tap, that not only torque out at the proper torque, but they actually auto-reverse ("Tap-o'matic or some shit). Damned if I know how it works, but that'd be the ultimate speed mechanism for banging those in.. If you could find a way to auto-chuck the nutserts you'd be moving at nail gun speeds. Anyways, brilliant idea dude. Keep on making vids like this!!

The let down with this system is that you are pulling the rivnut in with a rotating bolt in the threaded section, if you have a standard nut in place of the drilled out one you can pull the bolt through with any turning on the thread, and less likelihood of stripping the thread, that is the way the rivnut inserters operate, also well grease the rotating parts, it make the job much easier.

For those who watch this vid, I recently did a project which required 200+ rivnuts. I started with different hand lever rivnut tools, I bought an air tool because of the number of nuts I had to do. The handmade tool in this vid is by far the best solution. Having one of these in your tool box is better than having a phneumatic because of setup time. If you have 100’s to install then use the air gun. Having this handmade tool available, always ready..brilliant. Thanks to the maker of the video for sharing useful information. These are starting to be sold at fastener stores, the only difference is a small roller bearing in the washer setup. 40$

@NathanWilsonDrivingDreams
@NathanWilsonDrivingDreams 5 жыл бұрын
Rivnuts are much stronger than tapping the thin steel. That's the whole idea. Instead of the one or two threads that you'd get in an 1/8" off metal, you get 12 in a half inch long rivnut. Anyway, I welded them once everything was tested and correct fitment and alignment was ensured.

2 huge issues with this method, have used it before and it does work BUT. you are using rotational force on the threads to set the rivnut, IMO not good. can easily damage/ fatigue the threads. I also notced my rive nuts were slightly offset. not crimped 100% even if you will using this method. buy the astro adn14 or adn38 using straight pulling force not turning of the threads, you can use your impact and crimp as tight or as loose as you want. Damn good tool.

Self tapers man I don’t understand why so many people use them on their vehicles, I absolutely hate them they are extremely cheesy. For cheesy people I guess haha because every time I see someone using one they are putting it through the body sheet metal expecting it to magically work and then end up with a dozen useless ugly holes in their vehicle because they strip out immediately. Like where’s the common sense at? Anyways nice idea man smart thinking! I’m gonna give it a try when I install the rivnuts for my custom roof rack.

Don't mean to sound critical, but you've really over complicated this. 1st the pneumatic tool works much like a rivet tool, if one bite doesn't get the nutsert tight enough you just adjust it and take a second bite, you didn't show on video how you were using it so I can only assume. 2nd the little hand tool you made is way over the top. No need to drill out nuts or weld them into a perfectly good wrench. Just take a bolt of the same thread and pitch, two flat washers and a nut. Thread the nut on the bolt, then both flat washers and thread the nutsert on last. Snug it against the washers. Insert into the hole, hold the bolt with a wrench and tighten the nut.
