Last winter, I was looking for a new style of mating box for my queen mating yard when I stumbled across a video by Barnyard Bees. In David's video, he's using 2 frame mating nucs and made them look very efficient. From there I played with this idea and decided to try splitting 5 framers in half. Tune in to see how I made them and to hear my thoughts.

Between you, barnyard bees, dirtrooster, and Mr. Ed. Pretty sure i know more about bees than any PhD professor in Louisiana. I am just prepping for my own personal first hives. But have been around them a while. And i think barnyard bees has something here with the 2 frame nuc idea
@KayAteChef
@KayAteChef 2 жыл бұрын
A PhD will research what beekeepers are complaining about and look at what beekeepers have been doing about it and the PhD may become very knowledgeable about a very specific aspect of beekeeping or rather... some aspect of the lifecycle of bees. A researcher will not necessarily know all the operational details of how to run an apiary profitably but they may come to understand a specific problem very well and develop a solution. A beekeeper may not understand much at all beyond what is profitable. I think in the main, researchers and beekeepers overlap. Look at Bob Binnie. The man is scholar and a shrewd businessman but his priorities are the operations and not the research. Although he seems to be prioritising the publishing of everything he knows at the moment. A researcher's priorities are research, and not selling honey. As time rolls on, research becomes more specialised. The beekeeper and the researcher diverge. No more Brother Adam. Or rather, the modern Brother Adam is just a professional breeder who relies on specialist research, just as a honey producer relies on specialist breeding. It takes all sorts.

I agree, the more uses the better.Why limit what you have, it just don't make since. I think you will be happy with them. Plus if you have strong colonies to split, you can make a ton of splits with 2 framers.

@anabelaramos8399 3 жыл бұрын
I am also doing the same with the 10 frames if the colonie is small. I divide it and give them more space when they need it. The 2 frames are great, 5 as well. I love those dividers that we can put in boxes. An old friend bee keeper says it doesn't have to be wood, some hard plastic material is enough. For ladies who prefer scissors and are not carpenters. He understands women.

I read a comment about blowing the 2 frames out so fast but in Barnyard Bee Video he only using on frame of bees with brood and the other frame is blank or with just a starter strip. This allows more time for bees to build up the nuc and not so called blow it out so fast. Plus if you do this with no queen your looking at 30 days for them to raise a queen. Just my thoughts and I am going to be doing like several 2 frame nucs this year. I love your 5 Frame idea for sure. Looks like a win win. PS glad you got all your videos back as well. Hi Jason...I can tell you that David at Barnyard Bees is a sharp guy and he's a hustler...works a 12 hour night shift and works bees in the daytime. I use 2 frame boxes, have for years now. I'm a farmer, build all my own stuff, and I put a jar feeder on the outside rear of the box. It meadures 5" x 6" and has a screened bottom to eliminate drainage from temperature fluctuations. Its attached to the bottom rear of the box and the bees in the nuc access it thru a 3/4" hole that doubles as a vent. I have these on all my nucs, 2 and 4 frame. The bees explode...but I live in Central Florida, today it was 80 and I had a fire built...the 2 frame is the way to go, shoot the feed to them and you won't believe how they're gonna make more bees. I've done this all my life but enjoy your videos....you're doing just fine. Keep after it son...you got this!

Hey Matt, Good to see you in the comments! About the staples, they did not hold up for very long, that's why I attached the shim to help secure them to the divider. The feed bags wanted to pull over the staples. Sounds like your diving right in with 15 boxes, that would be 30 split.

I think this is a great idea to get colonies going with less boxes to start with. I know they can grow really fast so in that case I’ll give them a 5 frame nuc of there own then to a hive body when that’s at its limit. I’m guessing there so many reasons for going 2 frames however I do find this very interesting. Thanks for sharing awesome video as always.

Jason, I used old gallon size tea jugs to store and dispense my syrup. I found several years ago, if I put in about a tablespoon of honey be healthy in each gallon and make sure it is mixed, it doesn't mold for a much longer time, if at all.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Great tip! The only issue is I don't use honey B healthy. The reason is when it's used the smell travels and before long every bee in the neighborhood knows where to go eat. I used to add all kinds of essential oils until I observed that. I have seen sugar syrup recipes that include vinegar to prevent mold though. I think the vinegar also offers other benefits to the bees but not sure what they are.

3 framer is a better balance between a 5 frame and a 2 framer. Divide a 10 frame box into 3 compartments, works better...its a little harder to physically remove frames in a 3 framer if the partitions stick up above the box with inner covers between the partitions. You can winter a 3 framer in North GA. They do not get as crowded as fast but they will soon enough. Can remove 1 frame to reduce crowding without hurting the nuc.

Dividing a 5 frame box into two 2 frame NUCs in my opinion is easier to work with than the 10 frame boxes I see divided into four 2 frame boxes. It is just easier to handle and you can keep the entrances further apart. I like the two frame NUCs but not a dedicated two frame boxes which seems like a waist of material and too many things to handle. A divided 5 frame box makes better sense. Keep things simple and more standardized. I use the cattle tags too, I can move the number tag with the queen as she is put into different boxes and record keeping is easier. Great video.

I don't mind the queen castles and really haven't had issues with them. I think placement is very important when setting up a mating yard. I like using trees as land markers. I think that greatly helps reduce drifting. I forgot you used cattle tags too. They work very well.

I wanted to just propagate but my wife decided she wanted honey so my plans got held off a year. I ran into barnyards page also. This year I need to build bees. Lot's of bees. I'll be running 10 - 2 frame hives minimum and grafting queens. May even build more. If one queen up here can build a good 5 frames of hive in a season then ten queens should be able to build me population for 5 more 10 frames by fall. 20 queens should be able to do that before July flow. with another 5 by fall. I indoor winter so i'm gonna try winter the two frames also.

I'm in my late 60's Jason and work a little over 600 acres here everyday. I haven't ever had a public job, we just do it all here everyday, 7 days a week every week. I raise cows, bees , vegetables and hay. I've always run everything as a cottage industry because I don't like and don't trust the goverment to get involved in a damn thing I do. If they tell you that they just want to help you...they're lying to you son. They only come to create more bullshit so they have a job tomorrow. Just keep trying to learn everything you can, and always remember that bees are just bugs...they're a wild thing that we've put in boxes. Stan I had a heifer calve a few years ago and got to experience a prolapse myself, what a mess that was. I called the vet and helped him push it back in. What a job that was. A few days later another farmer told me to coat the prolapse with brown sugar that it would make it smaller and easier to push back in. You ever heard that? Did you have to stitch it in? How's the ribs? Be safe!
@stanholloway8774
@stanholloway8774 5 жыл бұрын
Jason Chrisman I use sugar if theres a lot of swelling...you gotta keep the cow standing up, a squeeze chute works best and that takes the pressure off her abdomen. Coat the uterus in sugar, get a pair of the wifes panty hose and put the prolapse in the panty hose...that keeps the sugar in place and keeps the flys off till the swelling goes down enough to push it back inside. If it starts to come back out, then you'll have to put a couple of stitches in her. If your wife is like mine shes gonna raise hell about the panty hose but I don't pay a whole lot of attention to her...

if you like the 2 frame nuc setup then use a 10 frame body and divide it into 4 compartments. Personally I don't care for them too small a space...after 1 or 2 frames of brood emerges then it becomes too crowded. If you remove 1 frame then you have taken half the nucs resources...too much..... Also, too small to over winter...if in a 10 frame box then you can remove one partition and make it into 2x5 frame nucs for winter. But trying to run a 2 frame nuc all season for mating is not easy. If you have several 2 framers, you can shake bees out of them into a package and start a new colony that way to reduce crowding. 2 framers are basically good for temporary queen storage and cell emergence.

Jason, you discovered the same as I (I did a vid also)....the two frame box was very tippy in the wind.....converting a 5 frame nuc into a double two frame seems the simplest way to go. Duck cloth works well as an inner cover...but more expensive than your feed bags...but it doesn't flip up like the feed bags do.... I like your "vents on the bottom board, more because I found if my feeders leaked, my bees drowned as there was no way to drain any rain water or sugar syrup that drips down. The doubles are tough that way because we generally "tip" the hive one direction or the other towards the entrance....can't do that with a side by site with entrances on opposite ends.

I have only ever split hives once before (new to beekeeping), how long would you leave them in a two frame colony? Once they build up a two frame colony do you put them in a nuc box or 8-10 frame box?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
They stay in the 2 framer until mated and have capped brood. From there I do move them to a 5 framer. Once they fill it they are moved to 10 framers.

It seems to work for you. I like the idea! I imagine there has to be a slightly lower success rate due to pheromones in the same box? Unless the propolize the barrier between chambers well.

Another Q: I've made my double two frames, but with a solid divider. So my question is about the removable divider....once removing the divider to allow for 5 frame nuc, how are you dealing with the propolis the bees will surely stick into the channel for the next time you want to use a divider? Sure seems like a good plan....but bees have a way of muffing up a good plan.

Will you also start a small patty of pollen substitute 2-3 weeks before you expect your local plants to "spring" into flower to push up brood starts?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Usually I add the patties to the hives before I split them. That way, a few weeks later when it's time to make splits I have lots of brood.

Jason, what were the temps day and nite with you started using the nuc 2x2's? I tried the same thing two years ago, but it didn't do well. I am thinking it was too early in the season to start.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
I am not sure off the top of my head but I do know we had many chilly nights after they were made up. I am sure there was a few nights in the high 30's. Maybe you didn't add enough bees to keep brood warm? One of the advantages to this setup is having colonies in one box they both help keep each other warm.

I did this and when one queen became a drone layer, ikilled her and united them and they killed the good queen, leaving them queenless, so I think you need a vent between the too the same as the snelgrove crown board.

These colonies never get strong enough to glue in the divider. If they did then I didn't manage them correctly. Ideally you would transfer them to a bigger box after you see the queen is mated.

Hello Jason, I stole this Idea on your Nucs this year works great better than just a 2 frame box, because of the ability to expand if one doesn’t return. I have feed bags as well but had double bubble insulation used that. We are going to do that queen swap I need your email again, going to be about 4 weeks, I’m having surgery on my leg in couple days🥵. But I will email you. Thank You, Scott

I take it the nuc idea worked well for you? I like it, it a lot. It helps to cut down the equipment needed until queen get mated and I prefer deep frames over mini nuc frames to judge the queen performance. My email can be found in most of my video descriptions. I don't really like sharing it in the comment because then I get a bunch of spam. Check with me a couple weeks before your ready to make sure I still have queens to trade. I was hoping you were really soon because I had a couple to spare but I understand your health is more important. Best of luck with surgery.

But I will send you a couple and we will see how they do. It’s ok if you don’t have any to send back. I will keep you up dated when I’m up and about again. Thank you Jason for all you do in the Bee world.

Hi Jason. I see you introduce virgin queens and not cells. Why do you do it and how long are the nucs queenless before the introduction? Do you release the queen after a few days or is there candy in the cage?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Eddie, I introduce virgins vs cells because I use my incubator to finish my cells. I like to get a visual on her too before introducing. The nucs are made up once a queen emerges in the incubator then I wait 24 hours before I install her. I always manually release but the time varies. Sometimes it's 12 hours later sometimes 24. It's based on how busy I am and the way the bees are acting to the cage.

I have just ordered 2 nucs for my first ever hives. May 9 I pick them up. Could I take one of them and do like your split into the two 2-frame nuc box you just illustrated? I guess I would have to hopefully get some queen cells from my other nuc?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 жыл бұрын
That's great news! Congrats on the bees. You could just buy a mated queen to add to one of the sections with some of the bees. But you would want the bees to go in a day or 2 ahead of adding new queen or they will kill her. They need to realize they are queen less first.

They can drift to another hive very easy unless your mating yard is setup correctly. You have to think like a bee. Imagine your on an airplane and your approaching your local airport, as you get close you start to see things that look familiar to you. It's the same for the bees they need land marks to go by. For instance I setup my yard around trees and leave plenty of space between the hives.

I wonder how much more effective it would be to use half length frames instead of full length frame? It's seems like bees could keep their space warmer especially in colder weather. As far as two colonies sharing one box and it was not a problem when I did it last year. I had a follower board that had a one inch gap off bottom off it. It was a long lang and never noticed any issues. Was plan on using 6 frame nuc and splitting into 3 2 framers or putting half length frames in it.
@KevinsNorthernExposure
@KevinsNorthernExposure 5 жыл бұрын
It would be easier...and there are mini nucs out there that use frames 1/4 of the size....but the entire reason for this style, is that you are able to simply pull a frame of brood out of a hive and slide it in here.....and also when you have a successful mated queen, transfer that frame to create a new nuc. The mini-nucs have one purpose...to create a mated queen for you to take out, mark and transfer somewhere.... This just allows for transfer of frames much much easier.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Kevin is right but is leaving out 1 major factor, using deep frames for mating nucs gives me a chance to grade the performance of each queen before she is sold or transferred to a bigger box. Always keep in mind when open mating queens you never know what you will get. You could get a great layer or a poor layer, You can get mean as heck or docile and easy to work. So judging them is also a good thing.

Not to sound like too much of a dummie but I noted in a previous clip that you didn’t use the swarm cells on your frame, you always placed a queen into the nucs. Why not just leave a swarm cell in place and await her arrival? Or did you incubate those swarm cells? (Or turf em?) I love the idea of splitting the 5 framer.
