I hope I don't take away from the spirit of your present video; but I have to say that both you and your father are so very lucky to share such a special relationship. I lost my father when I was young, and never had the opportunity to share such special moments as you two experience. I'll bet he is extremely proud of you

Very nice shot at the end ! At 22;30 you secured the oar to the oarlock the wrong way. In that position you could break the oarlock with a decent force. The other thing is that your blade could enter the water in an incorrect angle disturbing your balance. And if you want to practice rowing with horizontal blades during the recovery, apply some lithium grease to the oarlocks for ease rotation of the oars. Sorry for my limited English. Succes !

I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I have to say that this is one of the best! I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that brings their sails inside to work on them and then realize how large they are. 😊 Best of luck to both of you with the race, I’m looking forward to following your progress. I will go and check out your website.

I was once the owner of S 20 Hull 368 in the 1980s. I reworked it and named it Chubasco. Our racing colors were orange and blue. I loved sailing it, regardless of my just cruising with friends, or flat out racing it. I hope you enjoy Orca as much as I did my boat. It is a very good light to medium air boat, that is very sensitive to on board weight shifts, necessitating at times, that even the helmsperson hiking out. Enjoy!

You have prolly figured this out already, but even with your crewman aboard, the bow was pointed skyward. I am guessing you will need some movable ballast like water containers. A full 22litre water can would be 22kg (whatever those are) or almost 50pounds. Two or three of those can be moved forward and back depending on sailing or rowing.... or maybe can find a more central place that works for both or requires only one move. Oh and two 10litre cans may be easier to move than one 22litre can.... after rowing for a bit.

Great project! I'm a big fan of the R2AK (from the UK) and have just found & subscribed to your channel. An idea to stabilise the twisty shimy of the rowing platform: a bridle (inverted vee) of rope to the rear corners. Fix the halyard/topping lift to the peak of the bridle. The longer the bridle the greater the stabilising effect? You are going to struggle with fore and aft trim on such a short hull, with one rowing out back and the other steering (who would usually be the aft-most crew member) the fat stern is immersed and the bow is rising; bad for rowing. So get the steersgirl ahead of the mast, either with a remote on the autopilot or with steering lines to the tiller; or could be well forward in the cabin if it's cold? You will notice a rowing speed increase. Fore/aft trim is really critical in small boats 'coz the crew's weights relative to the boat size are more significant. Plus its not something easy to assess when you are in the boat. A fore/aft level indicator maybe?

what a great experience this will be. a friend of mine has done the race twice, first in a thunderbird with two crew...and lastly in a larger sailboat with several crew. i like your set up! i would think about the rowing extension when there's a little swell?...it might swamp the rower. maybe a buoy on the lower end of the sled. i'm excited to watch your progress! all the best from mexico.
@AllAboutSpray

@@AllAboutSpray you probably have a fender on board anyway, or should in case you need to come alongside for any reason...that, or those, could double as sled floats. just keep having fun! life goes by fast...ask your dad.

This is so great! Be sure to turn that seat around on your rowing device - the cutout in the seat should face the bow of your boat. And place your thumbs on the ends of the blade handles to help prevent them from spinning in your hands if they catch the top of a wave. If you haven't yet, watch a video on sculling and incorporate "feathering" the oar blades to the create less wind resistance when out of the water and so that they don't clip waves going by. Can't wait to follow your adventure!
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for the tips! That’s the first time hearing about the seat. I definitely need to practice the feathering, I was surprised how awkward it felt initially. Thanks so much!
@boatfools
@boatfools 3 ай бұрын
I saw you started to feather at the end of the video. Nice. Keep left hand over your right (you might have to adjust the oarlock height with those orange/red washers), and be sure to drive with your legs (don’t yank with your back and arms, unfold like your picking something heavy off the floor - legs, then back, then arms ). Sorry! I used to coach rowing. Binging your videos now. Love your Tartan!

Dump that crossover rowing. if you had been rowing like that for years, it would be different You catch and injure during the race, you're done It's happened before, lost in the moment, tired, bored, wave hits oar hits and breaks your thumb Thats why most very long distance(across the ocean) don't do it
