Man, it sucks that this guy doesn't do videos anymore. Some of the best, most straight forward stuff on KZfaq. And he legitimately might have the best sounding drums I've ever heard. Great player too!

Here's how I was finally able to do this comfortably: After many failure attempts for the first groove, I realized something with my independence is wrong. So I put my pad infront of me and I started doing double strokes. As I was doing so, I accented the second note of each double. Easy peasy still, I know. Then I tried adding a foot on each unaccented note (the first note of each double) and that's when I realized that THAT! is the reason I couldn't do the groove. I COULDN'T PLACE MY FOOT ON AN UNACCENTED NOTE! Took it reeeaal slooow. Just double strokes, second notes accented and a bass drum on the unaccented. You do that and I guarantee you, the first groove will be peace of cake to achieve

A few years back I used to struggle with this... until my band wanted to cover Tom Sawyer by Rush. After that I can put the bass drum at any point in the time/space continuum no problem! xD

Every video I've seen Austin publish has been enough above my skillset to push me past my current ability. I thought I had my 1/2 X shuffle solid. I've never put the bass only/all the ah's before, and it humbled me instantly. I still use his practice pad warmup before I begin practicing. I look forward to more videos. Awsome Lesson Austin! Very clear. I love the idea of teaching the strong vs the weak beats on the bass drum without losing the groove of the hi-hat... then trying to make the weak beats feel just as good as the strong beats. Nicely done. Definitely gonna share this with my students.

Austin, thx for a focused drum lesson. I'm a resurrected drum player after a 50 year hiatus, and now retired playing for pleasure and as a Hobby. This is great tip for coordination of hand and foot. My goal is to be able to equal the caliber of my playing to the level of say, Dino Danelli (Rascals). I play each day, to My Music : Petty, Mellencamp, CCR, Stones, Beatles, Cars, Shaw Blades, Capton, Melissa E., Eagles even Linda Ronstadt( probably the original Diva.....She was damn good and her studio band [some of whom beca e The Eagles], and more....basic Rock. Playing Music is a real pleasure in life. So I try to keep it enjoyable and not let it get to me by frustrating me. Be well all, halpy drumming.

OMG! This one did it for me. I immediately jumped on my kit and started practicing it. Cause I've struggled with those 16th notes and Bass Drum for years. Now I know how to work it out. For years I've wanted to learn the Purdie Shuffle. Here it starts!

This guy is a great teacher. His hands warm up video is my go to warm up. His half time shuffle exercise, as well as the Moller upstroke bass drum exercise isn't as easy as some think.

U have some good videos man. Thx for showing ur techniques. I played the snare for 3 yrs in school and I self taught myself on the kit. I'm not a pro or anything and it's always good to study other people's techniques. Carter Beauford was a drummer I looked up to highly. So him and Dave Weckl and Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan r pretty much the type of drumming I love. Thx again and keep'm coming!

Great content as always Austin. This is something I’ve really been focusing on lately. Not only trying to eliminate flaming between my limbs but trying to sharpen my ears so that I can lock up a band in this way. For years I never realized that I had been neglecting such a crucial aspect of making a band sound good. Once I started getting chewed out by band leaders on paying gigs I realized I had to do some maintenance. I’d love to hear your take on listening intently to the players around you to eliminate flamming within a band mix.

Great lesson Austin. Went upstairs and worked on it right away. No problems with the sixteen note groove but the half time shuffle was a little tricky but I eventually got it using the push pull method on the hats. The dynamics sounded and felt great. Thanks man.

Regarding the half time shuffle example: Even trickier is putting the bass drum on the SECOND triplet, essentially mirroring the ghost notes on the snare.

Awesome exercise Austin! I'm going to try the 16th hand pattern and half-time hand pattern with bass drum doubles too.

Another idea on the first exercise could be to run down say the first page of Stone, playing the BD where the left (or right) hand is notated, to give some more patterns to shed (e.g., what you showed would be the first two exercises of the first page of stone...with the BD playing the RH notes only, and keeping the HH going throughout and snare on 2 and 4). Keep up the great work!
