@@ArturoCepeda8I don't know her level of vision, but he has pinhole vision. Blind doesn't always mean the world is completely dark. Here is what AI said when I typed in "legal blindness definition": "The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) defines legal blindness as having central visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better-seeing eye, even with the best correction. This means that a person with legal blindness would need to be 20 feet away from an object that someone with normal vision can see from 200 feet away." Many people who are legally blind have some level of vision, such as pinhole vision, blurry vision, ability to detect color and or light in various conditions, and more.

With Mira teaching the run command, it makes sense that their harnesses would have more mobility than that of schools that don't teach it 😂
@foxxgirl63567 ай бұрын
My thoughts as well. But also why wouldn’t the other schools also teach that? Do they think a blind person will never have the need to go at a faster pace than just a walk?
@Strawberry246806 ай бұрын
Ok
@anonymixx81063 ай бұрын
@@foxxgirl6356 Actually yes! Many non sighted handlers also have mobility issues and simply wouldn't use that task enough to make the investment truly worth it. It's important to remember that with the degree of guide dog training, each and every additional skill can add on MONTHS and THOUSANDS. For someone who genuinely doesn't run everyday (or does so very rarely) or is already tight on the investment, this could make a big difference. For example, Lucy Edwards dog, Molly, doesn't have escalator training! This doesn't impact her much since the main time she travels and sees them, she is with her partner Ollie, who can carry her dog on the escalator. Basically guide dogs are frequently only trained to what someone would use every single day, not always what the handler may use at any point. Some guide dog handlers are simply more privileged to be able to be more active on a daily basis or to be able to afford extra training that applies to non-daily life. Something else to keep in mind is that even non-guide service dogs are not ever meant to be the sole singular aid for a disabled person, for the health of the dog and dependency of the person. Therefore, just because a service dog cannot do a particular skill or task shouldn't mean that that disabled person's life cannot include that activity at all. We are also willing to do things like cut corners on having a dog that can say run with us if it means we can have better mobility on a general basis in our lives-- When you're disabled, you unfortunately simply can't always have it all.

Blind doesn’t mean you’ve lost all other senses lmao. When you hear a noise, your name being called, or someone talking to you, do you not turn your head toward the sound? Are blind people just supposed to stare straight ahead or at the ground since they can’t see? Legally blind also doesn’t mean you can’t see anything and the world is dark and black. Just like deafness/hard of hearing or any other disability it’s on a spectrum. People can be blind from birth or go blind later in life. Different causes of blindness result in different levels of sightedness. Some can see shadows, some only see extremely blurred objects, some have limited partial vision, and some don’t see anything at all. You, as a regular person, don’t get to decide whether someone is blind or not just because they are facing the person talking and knows or can tell something is in front of them. They’ve spent a long time being blind. They’ve learned different ways to compensate for their lack of sight. They aren’t fumbling around the way you would because they have learned to adapt to their blindness. Some of these comments are needlessly ignorant.

Thanks guys! I’d actually love a full video about different guide harnesses. I have a mobility service dog from the only US organization that safely trains dogs to do very physical work (and have done so for nearly 35 years) - they designed their harness with a dog orthopedist and build their own harnesses in house. People often assume I’m blind because of the handle, lol. I know the difference between my harnesses and most guide dog harnesses, but I’ve heard different guide schools use different designs for a variety of reasons. That could make for an interesting video if you can gather up a bunch of different guide harnesses to help people understand why schools use their specific designs. I’ve heard some are more rigid than others and others seem to be looser feeling - but WHY, from both the perspective of the dog and the person?

This is great! I think more Guide Dog Users should be able to have additional options. The guide dogs I've trained and different harness options rather than the standard leather. The handles I've offered are different too! Petite hands can struggle with wider handles, someone with a weaker grip or mobility issues might struggle with a heavier handle or someone might want something else because of sensory. Aluminum, PVC and Biothane are a few other options out there for additional accessibility options.

Well the length of them probably is because of that, but I’d imagine the material is just due to differences between what the schools use

Some in the UK have two options one where the handle is straight and square (like hers) and one with the handle where the poles look like they are more on a twist so the handle is even for you when ur on the side of the dog (his). Just depends on fit and preference for the size of dog and size of person and their relative positions when they walk.

The newer Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) harnesses have one detachable pole coming up from the middle of the back of the harness. It means that dogs can rest without the weight of the pole on them when they're sitting on transit, at a conference, under a table or desk. They're also apparently lighter weight.

I think it was late 70’s. So, many times she took me to work when I had no school. I remember doubting if some of the kids were really blind. They ran like savages and once I almost crashed against one because I was a little stubborn kid who was sure the kid could see me in front of him.
