Welcome to another episode of Film vs Digital challenge, but this time with medium format in mind. Today, I challenge Reggie Ballesteros and his Fuji GFX 100S with my Hasselblad H1 or Fuji GX645. Reggie is a Fujifilm ambassador + wedding photographer, so his skills are to be reckoned with. 2 Photographers will shoot the same model @seemaraman and see which medium stands the test of time.

FILM!! as always. The digital looked crisp and full of detail, rich in color and contrast and present. But, film transcended to another place, it was never real to the eye and that's what makes it desirable, just magical. Great work from both of you guys though, great pioneers for both formats. Keep 'em coming.

Such a great idea and production ! Exactly what i wanted to see ! I am a 100s shooter but i think the film is really nice ! I think maybe 100s just provides that easy of workflow , but film for sure has that magic color ! Love both ! Awesome job guys !

I prefer the film color rendition when not in mixed light. The digital handled the mixed lighting better... The film created more of a mood, while the digital looked very clean which could also be a bit sterile for some purposes... Great shots by both.

I'm more of a film shooter, but really can't pick between the two. Both were excellent. My only thought is that the digital might have had a bit too much detail for female portrait photography though. Would love to hear a bit more of your analysis/ opinion of the two. Well done to both.

Seema is beautiful. I’m biased toward images showing more environment for fashion. I personally think the lenses that were used were a little too short in focal length for closeups of the face. When there were strong sun light spots on the model’s dress as the model is standing by the door, maybe popping a fill flash would help to capture all the details of those bright spots instead of having them blown out? It will be interesting to experiment. Seema seemed to have a little bit tendency of lowering her chin. It’s up to the photographers to keep remind her to chin up a little to show her confidence. Just my two cents. Art is very subjective though. I can see you two are having fun shooting, that’s the most important. Thanks for sharing!

FILM, ALL day long!!!, but Chris, how did you stop any flare from ruining your shots, I just did some city shots around my home town with a 500c\m and 180/80 mm lenses, near a river, but all of them got a lot of flare in them, is it the case you have to use a lens hood All the time?, or ND filters?, or what would you suggest.
@andyvan5692

one other tip Chris, Hasselblads (H or V system) don't have a shutter lock H's can be turned off; so ALWAYS keep the darkslide ON (for H, with the camera turned on), RED dot in the window,or IN (for V) until the instant of shooting, this is your "firearm trigger safety" as the shutter will NOT go off, until this is removed, as the whole system is interlocked for film safety. (for the V system this is ultra important, when adding or removing the cable release!, as it is on the Trigger itself, and it is SO SO easy to nudge this, and set off the shutter by mistake!).

I think the film looks more aesthetically pleasing, but as you commented at the end of your video, the focus kinda brought it down a notch. I liked Reggie's photos a lot, the lighting, and his compositions, but the 'super crisp/see every pore and strand of hair' aspect of digital is something i'm not a big fan of...so i'm gonna make it a draw....heh
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Agree with you there. Fashion and portrait editing is something I’m still not used to. Especially with the gfx. Even with - clarity and - texture adjustment it was too crisp. I contemplated using a 10% diffusion filter snd regret not going for it haha

I would say you were both winners in that you were able to capture her beauty from different perspectives. That said, Chris your close-up portraits especially those utilising the reflections of the windows were your best shots. They were clean and sharp. I think Reggie got good photos overall but where he got you was with the environmental and full-body photos, the colour rendering in my view was better. The film shoots were too warm, given the colour of the walls and her skin tone. They seemed to blend too much as opposed to providing contrast and separation. Those are minor subjective details on my part. All and all, you were both having fun and doing this shoot on the fly. Under more controlled studio conditions I think the results would have favoured the film medium format. Keep shining.

I mean film is usually color temperture graded so it's harder to edit if its in mixed light usually you should make a test shot with a white balance card or color checker. The video was cool its kinda hard to compare because both had such great results

I will say this is the closest I've seen digital get to 645 as far as tonal range. Other than the focus issues, I preferred the look of the Portra shots over digital. Did you shoot the Portra at 800? If so, I think the digital shots should have been at 800 as well. :P. The only other thing I can really call out is that the GFX lens has almost too much micro-contrast for female portraits...Tonal range and colors to film, micro-detail to digital (not really a win here tho), but I must say, you each had some really amazing shots. LOVE your shots thru the window!

If you want accuracy you go digital. If you want some other type of look filmy go with film. It's a personal preference. With digital you can adjust to look like film, not the other way around. Same with CD vs vinyl records, accuracy is digital; some other type of so called warm sound or whatever go with vinyl. All user preference. Years ago when digital was in its infancy I'd have a different opinion, but not today. Newer isn't always better but in some cases it is and I've been around long enough to see and hear it. But again, whatever floats your boat.
@dre400
@dre400 2 жыл бұрын
As Tarantino states it, digital artists are spending hours on post processing to make it look like film and with todays technology it’s getting close, similar to a veggie burger. Also, vinyls offers a warm sound but other than that digital music are superior in most cases, not the same with film vs digital. As digital offers an instant gratification, and ease of use, film are superior in color rendering, resolution, dynamic range, grain (compared to digital noise) and don’t forget the variety of formats.

nice challange, but Chris, you should have used the 100 or 120 macro lens on the H1 as this can go to f2.2 so you could keep up with the fuji (as these can go to f1.7 or 2.8), so you could make sure if Reggie went "bokeh" you could go BONKERS BOKEH!! as the MF with these macro lens options can really show off the dof this system can offer, and you could have really blown the background, esp. with the model indoors, and this would have KO'd the competition!!
