Supco spp5 hard start kit AC compressor
The 2 hacks we show you in this video involve installing an AC compressor hard start kit, which usually contains a hard start capacitor and a hard start relay. We also show you how to do the hard start kit install on your HVAC. When your AC condenser unit is outside and the AC compressor noise is coming from it very loud, then you are near the end of life of your AC compressor.
When your AC compressor won't turn on you need a Supco SPP5 hard start kit and install it on your compressor across the capacitor. The Supco SPP5 will allow you to start your AC compressor when you have an AC compressor not turning on.

Any time you have an AC not blowing cold air, it usually means the ac condenser is not working, and either the compressor is not kicking in or the fan on the outside

Excellent video, and very helpful information. I watched several other videos first, and they assume you know all the technical jargon and parts. One guy said "test this" and "measure that"... while the camera showed his back as he leaned over the compressor. No idea what he was doing, testing, measuring, etc. This video was VERY helpful. Good find. What I find most of the time is a dirty condensing coil. Clean it and then go enjoy the cool. A dirty air conditioner (AC) condenser coils can cause the compressor to overheat and cause the compressor thermal overload to trip until it cools and resets itself. Heat buildup Dirt and debris on the condenser coil can reduce its ability to release heat efficiently. This causes the condenser to work harder, which can lead to overheating. Strained system When the condenser coil is dirty, the compressor has to work harder to compensate for the heat buildup. This puts extra strain on the entire system and can lead to accelerated wear and tear on components like the compressor and fan motor. Just be careful how you clean the coil, the fins are only aluminum and bend very easily. Low-pressure air from the inside out (the opposite way the dirt is getting into the coil so you not driving the dirt deeper) followed by water the same way. Do this until the water runs clean. This method is good for water-soluble debre if you have oil-based goop you'll need a coil cleaner detergent, again, be careful of the aluminum chemical reaction and use designed cleaners. Normally, this is how I fix package A/C units, but even room units are the same.

Nice to find almost exactly our Rheem. It’s one AM I’m going back out because I didn’t see the cap in the tray. So I’ll pull the two screws and look again. I pulled the tin loose, swept, vacuumed, then kaboomed the coils with Kaboom toilet cleaner, not a hack something I found in the garage cabinet we don’t use. Anyway it’s a foaming cleaner, then I gently rinsed the coils from the inside out. Fired it up, output is cold to the touch, but close to the A coil in the closet the pipe is tepid at best. So I’ll go give it 15 minutes of water, I’m sure it was warm. And hope the HVAC Gus appear tomorrow. Thanks for making this video. Maybe cooling off will help for overnight.

I know my compressor is at the end of its life. Installed a 521 hard start kit. Techs wanted to charge 400 for ear system. Luckily, i was able to install myself. Realistically, how much more life wil ingrt out of my unit with the 521? Thank you very much for the informative video!

It's usually the capacitor. Same goes for the run/start capacitor on the air handler fan motor. Dirty coils on the condenser and the evaporator are also culprits. Dirty air filter doesn't help. MAINTENANCE!!!

Yes no one hoses down their condenser coils! Supposed to be done annually. I replaced the run cap twice last year and the fan cap once, and then the contractor, which on my AC, was pretty much all of the electrical components

What is the typical operating temperature of a common kitchen refrigerator compressor? A modern one, less than 10 years of age. Mine is running 125F when not running, and up to 170F when running a lot to restore fridge and freezer temps. Is this fine? Thanks.

Hi Jeff, so helpful thanks. We are sweltering here in the UK at the moment and our aircon has decided not to blow cold! We checked our compressor and have ordered the supco spp5 hard start kit but the letters on our compressor are U, V AND W. Where do we connect the wires to on that? The wires are black, red and white. I hope we can fix this as its so hot at night. Thanks :-)

You should connect them right back where they were. The letters U, V, W, mean the 3 phases in Europe. In the USA they are marked as L1, L2, L3.

Hey Jeff, over on West Coast, FL. Can installing a Hard Start kit prolong the life of your capacitor/compressor?

Yes many people get quite a bit of extra life out of it just be ready for when you think it's ending the end of life for example you're hearing it grinding or vibrating too much that's what the problem was with this air compressor unit here, was that it was vibrating the pipes going into the house and hence vibrating inside the walls very loud inside the house. Someone that time comes that's when you should start looking at getting the replacement AC ordered in right now many air conditioning companies are reporting 8 week back logs on ordering equipment. A friend of mine is getting a rheem unit installed and she is waiting until mid September at least for her unit.

No, this compressor was on its last leg, scraping, pounding, making a lot of noise, and vibrating the pipe to the point that it was super loud inside the walls of our house. this was installed in 2003, so it was way past it's end of life

Mr. Jeff: My 1-bedroom apt has an old compressor with direct drive...no logic module here. I've been here over a year and the A/C compressor never cooled correctly. I think the 521 would be a better kit to get for you because it is always better according to the experts to have the capacitor and the relay separate. The unit I bought was a cheapie $18 unit with the relay built into the capacitor now it worked absolutely perfectly for the 5 days that I needed it to work before we were changing out the unit. But if you're trying to squeak out a lot longer life out of it you may want to spend a few bucks and get the 521 hard start kit.

Anyone have any thoughts 💭 on an intermittent compressor . Capacitor new looks good. 👍🏼 is fairly new build house 2017. Does not make loud noises or grinding. Will work sometimes fine then just stops turning on compressor.

Usually caps are either good or dead, not intermittent. You can try another cap if you can get one under $20 might be worth trying

If for some reason you want to discharge the capacitor so you do not get shocked by it you can short it out with a screwdriver clip Lead piece of wire or whatever

Is it an issue to replace a start capacitor with the same rating, but not the exact model number? I have a Philips start capacitor with model 3530B8C0270A330B1 (I think) and can't find that exact model.

Yes put your hand on the compressor tank and if it feels too hot to the touch then it probably means that it's not actually spinning so you will probably want to try doing the hard start capacitor

What’s your warranty going to be on your new unit .5 years?

This high end Dave Lennox signature collection air conditioner comes with a 10 year warranty for parts. Our installers have a one year warranty for labor so as long as anything that fails in the 1st year they will pay for the labor and everything. After that the parts are free but I would have to pay for the labor unless I can install it myself.

The coils on unit are obviously very dirty. That makes a huge difference also . Clean them .

What do you do when your compressor is short-cycling,..on then off,...on then off? p.s.--(if this continues, compressor will get destroyed).

My compressor sounds like that. But then turns off after a couple minutes, VERY hot to the touch, while the fans are still blowing. One technician said the compressor is bad. Another came out and said I have a refrigerant leak, but checked again the next day with his partner and they said I have a clog. I’m wondering if all I need is a hard start. Any advice anyone?

Hi .. anyone can discuss to me if you have any idea regarding the split duct AC which is running but still there is no enough cooling coming out. We did checked the piping and coil and it is cooling. only the problem is the indoor unit blows not enough cold. we can feel just like fan only. thanks..

My friend has one in her house, and last year I noticed they were worthless in hot days, and you need to make sure those coils are clean, and the tube outside is dripping water.

Off on over load if it's hot. Check start amps. Compressor going bad. Lock rotor amp.

Yes, this puppy has been making a gentle grinding sound outside compressor for months, but the last month or so that gentle sound you can hear outside was viciously rattling the pipes inside out kitchen wall, very loud when it came on. It actually amplified the sound from outside. Totally amazing this AC worked right up until the end when we disconnected it, still blowing perfectly cold 72 degree air.

my AC doesnt drop to temp, i set at 76 and wont cool house down to set temp, it blows cool but not COLD, is this the compressor not switching on? i felt the outside unit line and it was pretty cold

I would check, when AC is on, is the fan on and blowing outside on the compressor? Ar eyou sure the compressor itself is kicking in, or is it just clicking from the relay contactor.

@@jeffostroff not too sure about compressor is on or not i can hear 2 distinct sounds (fan running and something else possbile low humming, assuming itts compressor), fan is on and flowing hot air upward, i took the panel off the side and it has a green status light indicator on and red and yellow alert lights that are off and not flashing any codes. i just bought foam cleaner yday and sprayed it inside across condenser and washed from inside out aswell, changed filter, possibly next change capacitor then maybe low refrigerant next

Ok so what is the next step, did the water trick, installed the booster jump thing, and still not getting cold air after only running it for 4 hours at 75 degrees inside temp, 85 outside temp... Any good advice will greatly be appreciated....

Did you check the capacitor? He kind of skipped over that in the beginning but that can very likely be the cause. You need a meter that tests microfarad

@@boblatkey7160 ok capacitor is checked and fully functional. If my compressor is dead center of the unit is there a way to check it while still running? The coils are all around and the fan is directly above it...today it only was able to run for 2 and 1/2 hours before the cold stopped coming out the vents. I usually have to wat over night until it will work again but only for a limited time, what is going on? Lots of parts have been replaced already... I'm running out of things to change or check... Any help is great. Thanks.

@@christopherloeppke4778 dang it, that is beyond me. I don't have any other good ideas. Definitely sounds like something with your compressor if it does work for a while and then it doesn't. Try these tricks if they don't help you might be leaking gas from it, sometimes if gas gets low the line can freeze.

At this point, call the AC tech. IF the compressor needs changing, might be time for a new one, or a new AC. Our compressor was going also, so we bought a whole new modern AC, this was 17 years old.

I'm a dummy. This has happened to me before because I was running the heat lightly throughout the day, then flipped it immediately to cold and if failed to actually start cooling. Had loud whistling for a while, but ignored it. AC was out for almost 24 hours. Turned the AC off overnight, which I guess let the compressor cool down, and the next day, I turned the AC on and it cooled again.

Watched like 35 videos on compressor and not a single one addresses the problem I have. Compressor works when I short it at the connection with the temperature sensor (thermostat) which is under the knob. I'm guessing that thermostat has to be replaced. Don't think it's the compressor, otherwise it wouldn't turn on when I short it. But it doesn't on its own. I'm guessing here, because I really don't know.

It could be t hat the circuit on the thermostat has failed to complete the connection, and so yes you would want to replace it

@jeffostroff Thank you! I did just that. Took the one from another ac, changed, and it does work. They're not exactly the same. The one I took off had an extra setting for "fan only" The one that does work doesn't. But I don't care. I just wanted cool air. Btw... in the process, I had to disassemble the plug, which came apart and had to throw it away. Didn't remember which wire goes where, tested it, and it turns out you can plug it either way. It works in both directions. 🤔

Yes but it won't have every single detail of how it's wired and how they do the gasses and the pressure and all that stuff. It poured down rain on us most of the day that we were out there and so trying to get the few moments of sunshine in was very difficult

@@konadayz426 No, the AC installer there with us has all the necessary licenses and qualifications. Not just anybody can evacuate refrigerant legally from a system.

That’s way too cold also your td should be 18 to 21 degrees it’s either got bad airflow or the refrigerant is low.

After you remove the terminals you are actually supposed to jump the terminals.

That does not make any sense, why would yo need to jump the terminals on the cap? With what? Just hook up the new hard start kit and you are off to the races.

jeffostroff when you first opened the door and showed the capacitors you said don’t short the leads. But after you remove the terminals from a capacitor you are supposed to short them to each other to dissipate the charm making it safe to work in the area.

@@hvacgameproper1177 I see what you're saying. I usually use a bleeder resistor. I was always taught it's not good to short a large capacitor, as the rush current could make it burst.

@@hvacgameproper1177 No, before you do anything its recommended to use a screwdriver to short the three terminals with each other to drain any voltage still in the cap. Usually if the unit is running and your pull the disconnect...it gets drained because the power was disconnected and the unit was on. Best to use a screwdriver in addition.

Any compressor which is over heating needs preventive coil maintenance... which we can all see the condenser coil is horribly clogged. The scroll compressor is shot because of lack of professionalism & isn't a hack.

You just misinformed an entire generation on how not to do Air Conditioning.....If a compressor is overheating & is in this state don't repeat this hack because it can cost the home owner more money for the lack of a proper repair & a bandaid hack which can cause total compressor failure. Leading to a bigger overhaul in terms of a repair.....SMH

No you are wrong. the compressor was 17 years old, and on death's doorstep, it's not something you repair, instead you replace it. We decided to change out the whole unit. The compressor was not overheating, but it was warm
