Hydroponics is a tricky hobby and has many questions, but the first question that comes up is, How do I start seeds? Do you use the heating pad in your house, under the tray, if the house temperature never goes below 75 degrees? Also some videos I see a dome over the tray, and some videos I don't. So should I put a dome over the tray until the seeds sprout? Would I use the Dome and Light at the same time? After sprouting would I stop the Dome and just continue with the Light only? Once you get them it can be hard to get rid of them. I've done a few methods over the years including fly ribbons, diatomaceous earth, neem oil spray, and natural predators (spiders in the grow room, non-poisonous and they worked ok) really it just depends on what's available to you and what you're willing to have in your grow room. Also @Al's homestead that's really not helpful once you already get them in your house, especially since they can come inside even without dirt from the outdoors.

@@midwestmangos2452 I put a thin later of vermiculite over the whole area of the pots. I saw Luke here recommended doing that in his vid on vermiculite and pearlite. Works really well I have to say. I also added a fan oscillating and blowing minimally, and it works good in combo.

I've been pondering about how to start sees lately and this video came to rescue. Thank you so much. .. near the end of the video, we need to cover the tray to keep the seeds in the dark because they germinate better in the dark. Then why should we turn the grow light on? I'm a bit confused here. If we need to, can I keep it next to a window in lieu of the grow light? Thank you again.

i know this is old, but one thing about the rockwool is they look kind of dry and also the starting pH in my experience has been very low. Its best to fill a 5 gallon bucket, ph the water (and add a trace of nutes i.e. seaweed, microponics photsynthesis plus, and GH root start) and let the cubes soak for about 1-24 hours depending on cube size. My 2 cents.

Presoak cubes in 5.5 ph water, for about 10 minutes, then add mild nutrients of grow/bloom, keep solution (TDS) at 0.2-0.3 EC or (100-150 ppm) in the 500 scale, then check and adjust ph to stay within range mentioned above. *Option, add root hormone gel/powder plus microbes to the mix after you ph/adjust for better protection and enhance root development. Hope it helps, Goodluck🤗

I had an infestation too in the early spring while it was still cold and the house was closed up. I bought bags of soil from the Dollar Tree and the swarm came shortly thereafter. I think I swallowed a few while talking while they were at their peak. 😂 I used vermiculite in my soil and topped / covered the surface. The weather warmed up and I moved most of my vegetation outside. Another channel suggests drenching your soil in the 1st 2 to 3 inches with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water. I blv the ratio was 1:4 or 1:3. This supposed to kill the larvae. However, you have to contain the adult ones flying around as well. So for the 1-2 kill punch, it is recommended to use the yellow sticky squares or fly sticky tape. I've also seen baking or microwaving your soil as a suggested soil sterilizing / larvae-killing maneuver. I've grown plants indoors before but never had an infestation like that in my life

I have been hydroponically going lettuce for a while now and watched this video because I follow his channel and respect his gardening advice. With that said I have months of experience germinating lettuce seeds indoors, and have found that lettuce germinates best without heat (like the heat mat he shows), but under grow lights 24/7 (until you are ready to transfer the seedlings to grow containers). I also add a small amount of kelp solution in my seed starting tray to cut down on algal growth under the lights. Hope this is helpful.

No composting rockwool, it's basically like fiberglass insulation which is why you should only handle it bare handed after it's wet. Even if you did try it would just sit there as rockwool for thousands of years because rock doesn't break down. It literally is just rock but in the shape of sharp long microscopic spear/ropes.

More light as they get larger and require it. I knew someone had to ask this. Everything sounded perfect until he mentioned putting them under the light..? Nobody's perfect. GMO seeds cannot be purchased by the general public. You must be a farmer that is licensed by the seed provider and sign a contract that dictates how it is to be used. One key point is that you do not save, sell, give, or distribute the seed in any fashion. The vast majority of subscribers here have no reason to be concerned about the GMO status of seeds they purchase and the packages marked "non-GMO" is a marketing strategy.

All of the nutrition a seed needs, until it has it's true leaves, is in the seed. Seeds do NOT need anything more than water to sprout. They also don't need light until they have leaves! Seeds can't absorb nutrients without roots, can't absorb light until they have leaves.
